View Full Version : For a team wins the championship this season should there be a asterisk?

THIS IS A HUGE DEBATE. ALOT OF POSTERS SAY THE SPURS CHAMPIONSHIP IN 99 SHOULDN'T HAVE COUNTED . i DISAGREE! YES THERE WAS SLOPY PLAY BUT IT WASNT LIKE THE SPURS HAD A ADVANTAGE OVER ANY TEAM. THERE WERE BACK-TOBACK-TOBACK GAME THEN THAT MADE POOR PLAY BUT IT WAS FOR EVERYONE. WITH THE 66 GAME SEASON ITS LONGER AND SPREAD OUT AND I FEEL WHOEVER WINS PEOPLE ARE GOING TO HATE ? OPIONION

16 games off the schedule is not an insane amount of missed games
Of course those who harp on LeBron will use that against him if so the Heat win the title.
It shouldn't but many fans will.

An asteric is for an unfair advantage not for everyone working within the same set of rules.

That's the only way I can see people complaining, or maybe (but there's not as much immature hate directed towards them) if an older team like Boston or SA does.

But 16 games is nothing. The playoffs will still be as long and as tough as ever. I've said all along that as long as the playoffs happen, I won't care. That's all that matters. All the great teams will make the playoffs, considering how many teams do. Once you're in the playoffs, there are no excuses.

I wouldn't even call for an asterix if it was like 41 games missed honestly...

Tis the mindset of fans

I'm just happy basketball is back. Knicks can't afford to let Amar'e and Melo waste a prime year. We aren't like Miami who has an elite defense.

Going to be a fun year imo. These next 2 weeks of roster decisions is going to be hectic.

Here is what I see regarding the next 2 weeks as you mentioned.

December 9 training camp I don't think that changes unless something gets delayed (like the NFL players did for a few days before voting and signing)

A CBA should take 2 or 3 days to finalize language so Monday an official CBA can be reviewed both sides (ESPN said Sunday the owners vote but if the CBA isn't written and just agreed upon I don't think they can really vote), so CBA signed and official by Tuesday or Wednesday and 7 days later the league year starts (free agency trades, facilities opened, etc.) giving about 2 days before training camps open to get some things done and it gives 7 days for all the new rules to be fully understood and off season plans to be created.

Yeah...it will and should be noted that it was a shortened season, but the asteric shouldn't take away any of the meaning/value, like you said.

Not like the asterisk that people wanted for Bonds, McQwire etc.

RCarlson85
11-26-2011, 12:36 PM
Hell no, I don't understand this argument or point. It makes no sense at all. Every team is going to have an equal 66 game season. It's not like some teams are playing a 66 game season while others are playing 82 so there would be an advantage for some with fewer injuries possibly or less fatigue. Dumb argument, everyone has just as much chance to win the championship.

For me, I personally think the 82 game season tests your endurance, and I just think it means more to win playing the entire season than as opposed to playing 66 games. I just find it unfair to past teams that battled through the 82 to get that 'ship, because in 16 games a lot can go right or wrong for you.

That's just my opinion though. I know the Spurs get it tough sometimes, and I understand that they won, but I would be willing to bet that the seasons where they played 82 and won the championship had more meaning than that shortened 50 game season, because it shut up all the doubters.

Can you imagine if the Spurs only won in the shortened season, and never again? I swear we'd have a different outlook on them. We'd be saying that they won their only 'ship in a shortened season, missing 40% of the season. We would bash that team. I'm not saying they were undeserving, they were the best team in the NBA that year, and they deserved the championship 100%. But if that were their only ring, I could bet most people would have a different outlook on them.

Also, this screws the Heat over... if they win, you can add this to the negative comments people have already put on them. They'll get trashed by fans even more.

So let me reiterate... if a team wins a ring in a shortened season, and don't win haven't won one in years past, or in the future, I think it becomes a huge problem. I guarantee that a sole ring in a shortened season will have people questioning the winning team.

we just had one of these recently, and again, its an OVERWHELMING NO! Every team plays the same amount of games. The only ones who will indeed hold an * after the championship is haters of whatever team won.

I am seeing it now. The Heat win the 2012 NBA Championship, and roughly half this site changes their mind and says it should have an * next to it.

Ask Duncan if it matters. I don't care if there are 20 games, every team has an equal chance on day 1. That is all that matters.

Well the title would count because of the games you play in the playoffs, but let's say someone goes 58-8 on the way that wouldn't be the same as going 72-10. So to me that wouldn't count as the best record in NBA History.

How will anyone even be able to make that claim? I don't care if a team goes 64-0. Still not = to 72-10, it can still be put in the record books for having a perfect season though.

Doesn't matter if its a 50, 60, or 70 game season to me. Every team plays the same amount of games, miss the same amount of training camps/preseason and thus has the same opportunities to win that the eventual NBA champ had. It's a level playing field. I would respect the 2012 champ just as I respected the Spurs when they won. It's still a competition regardless of the # of games. No asterisk.

Raph12
11-27-2011, 02:52 AM
No. 66 games is more than enough time to get your **** straight and tbh, it may be better than an 82 game season because teams can maintain focus better and stay motivated.

THE MTL
11-27-2011, 03:27 AM
With a 66 game season, the NBA only lost 16 games. The season doesn't even start for most people till you get to Jan-Feb.

There should be no asterisk, cause every team has an equal chance. And since schedules will be a little more packed, it will even eliminate that whole "extra" month of rest bias.

Yanks All Day
11-27-2011, 03:36 AM
If anything, this year it's going to be harder to win the championship. Older teams like the Spurs and Celtics will have more energy. It won't take them the full 66 games to lock up a playoff seed, therefore more rest will be given to the Garnetts and Duncans of the teams. They'll be much tougher to handle this season. Whoever wins this championship will have earned it fair and square.

I would have to agree with that. However, NBA is very competitive and I dnt think there is a team capable of such a feat. (well....it depends on how much the Heat rapes the league in acquiring amnesty free agents).
