Who is more popular worldwide back when they played and even nowadays? Bill Russell or Wilt Chamberlain?

Obviously it kinda depends on if we limit it to NBA or if we expand it to just the common folk in general, but anyone have any idea?

I don't know about anyone else, but I usually hear Russell's name mentioned WAY more than Wilt's in the general public. I'd say Russell

More people know about Wilt. But honestly I have people tell me all the time that Jordan is the only player to ever score 100 points in a single game.

Who? I've never heard of them.

I think up until the past decade it was Wilt. With Wilts passing and Russel being seen more in the NBA of late and having the Finals MVP named after him I think it boost his worlwide fame and put his name out there as a player to research and appreciate

Probably Wilt to the average person. More famous as an offensive player.

Wilt; he was well-known for being extremely athletically gifted in an era of non-athletes, putting up untouchable numbers and sleeping with a lot of women...

to the average guy on the street, Wilt due to all his personal records and stats. But any basketball fan should be well aware of both, and their accomplishments.

Outside of the Olympics which the Russians and a few other countries were into, the NBA didn't go global until after 1980.

Wilt having played and slept all over and appealing to non fans, or slight fans more is obviously more widely known.

To big fans, he's more infamous - like Jordan before the title - or James now. If they don't win, or win much less then people think they should they'd be characterized as as today's Wilt. Wilt the giant with the big stats, never wins in the playoffs... Of course he did win with a totally overlooked Philly team as the Celts were sagging with age. Then the got to the Lakers for more bling. But with the trades for much less value, and the bitter arguments with coaches, etc. that wasn't enough.

Russell is too subtle and too defensively oriented to appeal to that many. Maybe the titles and the phone commercials gave him a couple of extra points, but no way he reaches Wilt.

Depends on the condition and when it was made. If it was made in the 70's, worth something more than what it cost. Not if it's made recently though.

Could be worth something. I'd check it out with one of those sports memorabilia stores.

Just don't sell it there. They make like double what they'd buy it for.

Nobody knows much about either here (New Zealand), but I'd say a fair amount of people would know the name Wilt Chamberlain and be able to identify him as a basketball player, even if they couldn't say who he played for or recognize a photo. Nobody but basketball fans have heard of Bill Russell or would recognize the name.

It's Wilt, easy.

wilt.bill was a pretty controversial and outspoken person(especially on race)until pretty recently(mid 90's on)which doesnt win you universal love

i know nothing about card collecting, because i haven't done it since i was a kid, but even i know the price of a one of a kind proof (like the one you linked to) isn't representative of the price of a regular collector card like this guy has.

i would be surprised if his regular ABA card would be worht less than 300 to 500 bucks.

not 2 times or 3 times the original price like people is saying.

collectors are crazy, i sold a rolling stones vynil record that was not so special ( tatoo you) for 300 euros .
