View Full Version : DeAndre Jordan's Future

Clippers fans these days look upon their frontcourt with a glint in their eye. To the casual fan, they can bring up Blake Griffin's top ten Sportscenter highlights and get a encouraging nod. To the hardcore fan, they can discuss his rebounding and underrated passing. Everyone sees bigs things for his future.

My question is his frontcourt partner DeAndre Jordan. Clearly when you have a talent like Griffin, you want to surround him with the right pieces. I do believe Jordan is a very good fit because of his rebounding and shot blocking. I think they can play very well together. However, I see some flags. He's clearly a limitted scorer (his points are almost exclusively dunks/put backs) and extremely foul prone.

Rookie Year - 4.5 fouls per 36
2nd Year - 4.8 fouls per 36
3rd Year - 4.5 fouls per 36

By comparison the other top shotblocking centers from last season:

Dwight Howard's 1st three years = 3.1, 3.3, 2.9
Andrew Bogut's 1st three years = 4.0, 3.4, 3.4
Al Horford's 1st three years = 3.8, 3.1, 2.8
Emeka Okafor's 1st three years = 3.0, 3.6, 3.2
Javale McGee's 1st three years = 4.9, 4.5, 3.8
Roy Hibbert's 1st three years = 7.7, 5.0, 4.1

He's the only one who didn't see a significant drop in year 2/3 and he has the highest rate of the whole group.

What are your thoughts on DeAndre Jordan and do you see his foul rate decreasing to a more effective level?

DeAndre is crazy athletic with great size. He is constantly in foul trouble though. But he has a high ceiling.

He'll be a serviceable Center. I don't think he'll ever be towards the top.

He's got the tools to be DPOY in the future. I don't think he will be an all-star unless he becomes a great defender and people start noticing his impact on the game. Living in Los Angeles, I watch almost all Clippers games and from what I've seen, he has what it takes to become a top defender in this league.

role player. He has low intelligence and lives off athletic ability. The fact that he still hasn't figured out how to reduce his foul rate is an indicator of this.

He will get better at it, but I don't think he is talented enough, basketball wise, to ever be an all star. Even in the age of the pathetic center.

I'm surprised no one has picked All-Star.

I don't see him as a KG, TD, Shaq, Dwight, Hakeem type dominant big guy. I see him as a role player that every top defensive team needs. I see him playing a role identical to Marcus Camby and Tyson Chandler.

Pretty much sums it up... DJ might have Dwight-like athleticism, but his IQ for the game is extremely low on both ends, role player.

I think he'll be a very good center. The closest comparison I see is Chandler; both have similar strengths (rebounding, shot blocking, athleticism) and weaknesses (foul prone, limited offensive moves, etc.). Stats through the first three years are very similar as well

If the Clips start winning more and he keeps putting up highlight plays his foul/36 will decrease. Not because I see him changing his game... but because I see him getting more calls due to star treatment.

He will look great in a Raptor jersey soon...after the clippers show their cheapness and dont give him the huge deal someone else will

Jordan would be a great fit on the nuggets, who will need frontcourt help w/ or w/out nene. A Jordan/Nene/Gallo/Afflalo/Lawson would be nice with a Mozgov/Faried/Forbes/Hamilton/Miller bench.

He'll need a good point guard. He'll be a destitute man's version of Tyson Chandler at best.

Will he be able to bring down his foul rate? I'd love to know if anyone can find a big that had his foul rate drop significantly anytime AFTER his 3rd season.
