Overrated and underrated for all the wrong reasons

Underrated by people that don't know his game and only know his name. Appropriately rated by the rest.

He's a top 5 guard all time, and maybe the second greatest overall game player (not 2nd greatest all time just well rounded game), I mean in all aspects of gaming, second behind Magic in the overall game regard.

I think people view him just right.

Depend on who you talk to.. Some say he had an unfair advantage because of the era he played in being bigger, stronger, and more athletic then his opponents.. Some say he is one of the best all around players in the game.. Kind of a mix argument..

Most people here underrate him.

I think he's rated accurately.

Was an indisputable top ten talent/career for 25 years after his retirement in '1974. The most recent generation has produced three players who have surpassed him (Shaq/Duncan/Bryant), and as a result he is now top 15, fringe top ten for some.

He is accurately rated, an all-time great, fringe top ten, no lower than top 15.

It's been nearly 40 years since his retirement. I'd argue that he retired as a top five player of all-time.

Interesting point. The day he retired I'd say he was top 5.

Russell, Oscar, Pettit, West, Wilt - no order

I agree with this. I guess it all depends on where people have. Some have him in the top 10 and thats just outright overrating him. Maybe he is somewhere around 10-15 but no way in any shape of form will be he considered top 10 at this point.

I think he is a bit underrated, except perhaps by the people who really know the game.

He was a great all around player in the true sense of the word. He could shoot, pass, rebound do everything and he was a great great leader.

I find it hard to accurately rate him but the more I learn about him the more my opinion of him raises.

Underrated. No other player was able to accomplish the feats Oscar was doing on a regular basis. I think it's a testament to how hard he played night in and out against his competition who were all still professional athletes during his time.

Oscar was just a unique player who came along in the early days of the game and helped to further evolve it. As years go by the level of appreciation for what he did in this game becomes less because we have become accustomed to watching the modern athlete of this era. As with every sport someone had to be first in innovation. Oscar set the bar with his style. Definitely one of the all-time greats.

depends where you rate him. He is both honestly

Overrated if you think he was even as good as guys in his own era such as Wilt and Russell. Just to compare, Wilt won 4 mvp's, Russell 5 mvp's and Oscar 1 mvp.

Now if you are rating him in the 10-15 range all time he is where he should be. If you are rating him in the 5-8 range he is being overrated. If you rate him passed 15 then he is being underrated.

Just a note, in Oscar's career as the best player on his team, he only led a team to 50 wins once as the best on his own team.

If he is ever considered in the top 10 of all time = overrated..

To those saying he's overrated if he's put in the top ten is that based on his career accomplishments or advanced metrics?
