View Full Version : Why does Baseball not have 7 game Division Series instead of 5 games?

You play 162 games to have just a 5 game series doesn't make much sense to me.

Thoughts!!!

Its a simple way of trying to shorten the playoffs. But its totally lame and screws over great teams, turning the first round into a craps-shoot.

Because you don't want to be playing games in the November in the North East.

2 more games equals 3 more days which puts you just about into November. If you add another wild card team and they have a one game playoff that becomes 2 more days, so you are adding 5 totals days to the playoffs which can put you into likely horrible and bone chilling weather in Philly, New York, Boston, Chicago, Detriot....try hitting a 100 mph pitch off the end of the bat in 20 degree temps at 11 p.m. in icy freezing rain.

You need to shorten the season or start a week earlier if you want to do that.

So we aren't playing the World Series in November each year.

they should cut out a week of the regular season and make all 3 rounds 7 games imo

No, they should keep it at 162 games. Otherwise we won't be able to see certain teams make historically bad collapses.

Well maybe they should just make it 200 games then. There will be even more lead changes/collapses! Fun and makes sense!

Totally agree. Make it 156 instead of 162, the regular season is too long anyways.

Because Baseball wants to keep the game pure and retain its history. funny b/c of all the steroids in the records.... That's why it took so long for a wild-card and why it took a while for a second wild-card.

It makes perfect sense, the potential two extra games could help generate more revenue. I think it might take a team losing the series on a bad call in game 5 in order for it to occur. Kinda like how they seemed to really consider the second wildcard after the Padres got screwed out of a playoff spot by that bad call from the Umpires against the Rockies a few years ago in that one game playoff (At least that's what I noticed, I could be wrong of course).

It's more interesting and makes the later rounds more exciting

Adding 2 games won't make you play into November. The season ends the 27th this year.

it's better this way imo

Not to mention the average temperatures are only 1 or 2 degrees cooler on November 1st than they are on October 27th.

It'll send the playoffs into November.

But I've been saying that teams should be starting earlier than April.

I think they can get away with starting before March break.

The weather can permit it for most teams. And the teams furthest north would only have to deal with about the same type of temperature as they would in late October.

Less off days in between playoff games.

No reason to shorten the number of games in the season. More double-headers in season and less pointless days off in the postseason would be fine. Days off in baseball aren't good for the players anyway like they are in the NBA.

I'm glad the Phillies and Yankees are out. But I really think it should be a 7 game series. This is coming from a Dodgers fan that twice benefited in 08 and 09 by sweeping there opponents in the DLCS.

The season is a marathon and to only play 5 games is just not fair.

Average temperatures are colder in late March than they are in early November in just about every city.

Decreasing the number of games in the regular season will make strong statistical seasons by players less significant. 71 home runs in 156 games is a lot, but if all 162 games were played at that pace, then the home run total becomes a record. Just an example, but it would take a lot of the historic appeal from the games.

I don't see how playing on November 3rd is any different than playing on October 30.

I don't like it the way it is now... The better team will likely win more in a 7 game series and that is how it should be.

You can also say that if you make it into a 9 game series.

During the Wild-Card era, the team with the better record has won in the first round 55% of the time and has won the LCS and World Series 52% of the time.

So, the fact that higher seeds don't win the as much as in the NFL, and NBA is more a function of the nature of baseball rather than the series being the best-of-5 or best-of-7.

Because they want the World Series over by Halloween. Seems like they could expand the playoffs by starting earlier. It would take some creative scheduling but it could be and should be done.

I think because it would be november before the season was over. then, about 3 months off and back at it. But I could be mistaken. Just my opinion.

That way the weaker teams can advance when they are hot and then fail epically in the World Series (see 2007 Rockies)

No, but it definitely tests a team's rotation in terms of 1,2,3 punch and then the the LCS and WS it tests depth
