http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/60x60/phi.gifHamels, who is 6-4 with a 3.33 ERA in 12 career postseason starts, lost his only outing against the Cardinals this season, allowing seven hits and four runs in seven innings Sept. 18 in St. Louis.

PHILADELPHIA -- The Cardinals finalized their roster for the National League Division Series on Saturday, one day after a workout day at Citizens Bank Park. St. Louis elected not to carry Kyle McClellan on the roster, but Matt Holliday and Rafael Furcal will be healthy enough to play.
McClellan has been dealing with fatigue in his pitching arm for a good bit of September. He asked for a breather following his appearance on Monday in Houston. However, he said that after three full days without throwing, he felt very good once again. That wasn't enough to convince the Cardinals. MLB.com (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110930&content_id=25404708&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb)

Lynn and Adam Wainwright took turns throwing with purpose Monday afternoon at Minute Maid Park. But each rehabilitating pitcher insisted his performance was part of a process, not part of a long-shot postseason contingency.
Lynn, on the 60-day disabled list because of an oblique strain suffered Aug. 9, threw about 20 pitches with maximum effort to five hitters. Lynn experienced no discomfort during the session and admitted excitement about entering the offseason without restriction. That does not equate to availability for the postseason. St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://www.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/article_55a100dd-cc35-58ef-97b4-73cf454f8cfb.html#ixzz1ZJUIGdMu)

Lynn and Adam Wainwright took turns throwing with purpose Monday afternoon at Minute Maid Park. But each rehabilitating pitcher insisted his performance was part of a process, not part of a long-shot postseason contingency.
Wainwright threw about 40 pitches at what he estimated to be 75 percent effort during a side session. Despite his previous suggestions that he may try to lobby for a postseason role, Wainwright acknowledged that he doesn't see that happening. Jose Contreras (http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/team/player.jsp?player_id=425747)

Jose Contreras underwent season ending surgery yesterday. According to Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Contreras had his elbow cleaned out and flexor tendon repaired during the procedure.
Contreras hit the disabled list in the middle of June with a strained right forearm, but it was later discovered that the 39 year old was dealing with a more serious arm problem.
The Phillies determined last week that Contreras would undergo the season ending procedure. Philadelphia hopes the surgery will alleviate the elbow pain Contreras has been experiencing.
While Philadelphia originally expected Contreras to be ready to go next spring, the club doesn’t sound as sure following surgery. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro told Gelb that he wasn’t sure if Contreras would be back by the time next season began.

The Commissioner's Office has fined Cardinals manager Tony La Russa an unspecified amount for critical in-game comments made during Sunday's telecast of the team's Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Major League Baseball's vice-president for on-field operations Joe Torre spoke with La Russa Monday and notified him of the fine, according to a source familiar with the situation. La Russa declined comment Monday regarding any recrimination for his alleging that plate umpire Jerry Meals was employing different strike zones for starting pitchers Chris Carpenter and Cliff Lee during Sunday's Game 2.

Set to be a beautiful day in Downtown St. Louis. High of 83 today. That's actually not unusually high here, since October is kind of a transition month between summer and fall.

If you're going to the game in St. Louis or will be in Downtown in general, be warned that there will be traffic issues. President Obama is coming to town for a fundraiser and he'll be getting into town and leaving about the same time people are going to and leaving the Cardinal game.

I don't think the phillies game four starter has been announced. One of the Cardinals writers did mention today that Oswalt was in the pen today, probably working on mechanics or something.

Hamels is slightly above average in the looks department, but Jaime is not ugly either. Freese has a nice face and Skip is kind of cute. Ballplayers in general are attractive, mostly because they're usually in pretty good shape physically. They've also got lots of money and an awesome job. Of course, that stuff isn't most important, but it does make them more attractive.

That IBB to Carlos Ruiz with two outs was simply inexcusable (and unforgivable for that matter). A free baserunner. If there were less than two outs, then maybe I can agree with the strategy. But certainly not with two out. You go after Ruiz in that situation.

Havoc Wreaker

On one hand, Ruiz has had some pretty clutch hits. On the other, he's been absolutely horrible so far in the playoffs.

I didn't get that decision either,,,Hamels was NOT going to bat in that position since he was laboring and was over 100 pitches so LaRussa didn't force anyone's hand...didn't make sense...but, I am happy that LaRussa over-managed again....

That's what I considered for a little, but you're right. It would have been hard to believe the Phillies were bluffing in that situation.

On one hand, Ruiz has had some pretty clutch hits. On the other, he's been absolutely horrible so far in the playoffs.

That's what LaRussa ended up citing as his reason for the move, specifically Ruiz's clutch hits against the Cardinals (I can only remember the ones in the postseason and the ones against Broxton).
