Ryan Callahan says it's time, and now that he's wearing the 'C' on his blue sweater, the Rangers' right wing expects to be held to his word.

The 26-year-old captain looks at his team's offseason signing of All-Star center Brad Richards, general manager Glen Sather's work to retain key members of the Rangers' core, and the return of All-Star goaltender Henrik Lundqvist to back up a young and hungry defense.

It's enough to make Callahan confident that in John Tortorella's third full season behind their bench - beginning with Friday's regular-season opener against the Los Angeles Kings in Stockholm, Sweden - the Rangers have the talent to finish among the top teams in the Eastern Conference.

"We have to make that next step," Callahan said before the Rangers departed for Europe last week to play the second half of their preseason schedule. "Through the last couple years, we've built this identity and this system that we're trying to play, and now it's time.

"We have to make that next jump where we're out of the seventh, eighth spot and at the end of the year. We're looking for maybe home-ice advantage (in the playoffs)."
