Kenyon Martin will sign a deal with Xingiang Guanghui of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) in what will be the largest contract in the league’s history, according to multiple reports. Martin’s one-year deal will pay him $2.65 million for the season, Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski reports via Twitter.

The CBA instituted rules this summer not to allow players under NBA contract to sign with Chinese teams, as well as to forbid out-clauses in contracts that would let players return to the NBA once the lockout is lifted. In other words, Martin, a free agent after playing on the Nuggets since the 2004-05 season, will be in China for the duration of that league’s season. The CBA’s regular season ends Feb. 16 and the playoffs go through late March, the Denver Post notes.

"It's a great opportunity for him to stay in shape and stay fresh,” Andy Miller, Martin's agent, said, per the Post. "And it also gives him an opportunity to expand his name globally."

Wojnarowski reports that Xingiang is actually making a $3 million investment in Martin, as the team will pay his business manager a salary, as well as his agent’s fee.

It’s doubtful that any NBA team has been impacted by the trend of players heading abroad during the lockout quite like Denver. Wilson Chandler and J.R. Smith have also signed on with Chinese teams.

So j.r. Smith wilson chandler and k-mart will be free agents feb 16. Meaning they can take small contracts to sign with a playoff contention team after chinese season ends right?

Wouldn't Chandler still be a RFA, and property of the Denver Nuggets?

Won't be the first time he was offered a contract he wasn't worth. You gotta figure the team thinks they can make money off marketing NBA players. And at the same time, they aren't stepping on the toes of the NBA by signing their biggest talent.

Only applies in the NBA. When he comes back, the Nuggets would get first dibs.

Ironic that he ditches the CBA to play for, the CBA.

wait do they even have an opt out clause? I understood that the CBA doesn't allow opt out clauses.

If not and the NBA season starts (IF), then they gotta buy out their own players??

I could be wrong, but I'm not sure Kenyon would have taken a one year NBA contract.

So could be possibly join a playoff contention team in March, when the CBA league is done.

Also, since Wilson Chandler is a RFA who signed with DEN. When he comes back, does the RFA rules still apply?

I'd imagine any team can offer WC a contract, and Denver can match.

I'm more concerned about Smith and Chandler going to China... they are both sought after talents in the league. This is the first I heard of it.

Them not having an out-clause makes me think that they are probably getting good intel on the season being cancelled. No way is a sensible player going to take a 8-10 million dollar pay cut unless he is damn sure the season is gone. Martin was never going to get more than. Martin was never going to get more than the MLE; but these two guys are two young talents entering their primes.

kmart is on a good team which most likely will play until late march
