View Full Version : Miami Marlins Rebranding Leaked: Worst Ever?

gotoHcarolina52
09-21-2011, 02:02 AM
As you may know, as part of their move to a new 37,000 seat, retractable roof ballpark in downtown Miami, the Florida Marlins will be rebranded as the "Miami Marlins" later in the year. While the official unveiling of the team's new color scheme, logos, and uniforms is not scheduled to occur until November 11th, leaked images of the (likely) new logo have spread throughout the internet in recent hours. Some believe the scheme is designed to match the different "zones" of the new ballpark, which are organized by color. As a result, the logo is drawing parallels to the old Houston Astros "rainbow" uniforms of the late 1970s which were designed to match the seats of the Astrodome.

If true, could we be witnessing the worst (or second worst) rebranding job in the history of baseball?

Notice how both logos use identical Ms.

I kinda like the fish-with-bat logo. Seems better than the blah new "M" logo in the OP.

I don't mind the "Miami Marlins" name change. In fact, I think that it sounds pretty good to me. They just need a better logo that doesn't look so hokey.

Looks like a softball logo. Hopefully the powers that be will change it to something a bit more manly like a Marlin stabbing....well, anything! I do like the name change to Miami Marlins though.

I get that colors are sort of a nod to Miami's culture, but I can't imagine that the jerseys will look very good with so many different colors.

Also, any truth to the rumor that the Rays may change their name to the Florida Rays?

Hopefully not. That would be awful. Tampa Bay Rays is perfect.

I actually don't mind them. They're not the best in the world, but not the worst either. Based on those colors the uniforms have a good shot at being terrible, though.

True. I linked to it so you guys could see that the "M" in the new logo is the same font as the "M" in "Marlins" in the ballpark logo.

the logo (the ugly M that looks like a 3rd grader made it using graphic art in word perfect) is not necessarily the final product. it was intentionally leaked by the team's marketing department to get a feeler for the fans' reaction. this is a typical marketing ploy (that the mets unfortunately failed to utilize when they released their citi field inaugural season logo 2 years ago...).

The real question is whether that logo ends up on the uniform. I think it is fine for the stadium and suspect that's what it will be for. But not every logo ends up on a uni - look at the Yankees "bat and hat" logo. As such, I'm withholding final criticism until I see what the new unis and caps look like.

I agree. That fish with a bat is pretty unique and far better than this galactic garbage they're putting out.

Out of the fish logos, I especially like this one (http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j157/attica73/m-marlins-spec.jpg). Notice how the internal part of the marlin's dorsal fin makes an "M" for Miami/Marlins. Pretty cool detail.

Hell, they could have also kept things simple (and tried to establish some continuity and tradition) and gone with something like this: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/attachments/ootp-mods-logos-graphics-html/178707d1264225144-marlins-logo-request-new_miami_marlins_cap_logo.png

Teams with ugly uniforms:
Diamondbacks, Brewers (current), Blue Jays (current), Astros

Teams with not horrible/whatever: Padres, Angels, Nationals, Marlins (current), Royals, Reds, Rays, Rangers

Pretty good: Seattle

Best Uniforms: A's, Dodgers, Cards, Giants, Tigers, Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs, O's, Twins, Rockies, Braves, Pirates, Indians, Phillies, White Sox, Mets

The Angels need to return to these full time: (Tori Hunter) http://rob22aronson.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/20110304-112931.jpg

The Brewers need to return to these:

The Jays look like they are going back to their glory unis.
