You dont have to have watched Jordan to appreciate what he did for the game. Every time you put on a pair of J's.. every time you watch videos online of Jordan's Bulls.. every time you watch the players he inspired including Kobe and your boy Lebron himself who wore #23 in honor of Jordan.. you need to be banned for what you have just stated because it is truly offending. 50 years from now even a ********, drunk, dumb*** that knows nothing about basketball will associate #23 with the greatest player in the history of the game and his name is Jordan.

EDIT: I guess looking at the date you joined im not shocked. 80% of Heat fans on here joined after July 2010 and 99.9% of those know absolutely nothing about basketball

I wasn't reaching, I was correcting. The point is loyalty to a small market team cannot be how you distinguish who is better between Garnett, Duncan and Wilkins, because they were all loyal to their small market clubs. I am willing to concede that Duncan is THE #21, but you can't just assert something as truth and make it so, you have to prove it with argument.

The guy was one of the best high flyers ever (until he tore his achilles) and could take over a game offensively any time. His "D" wasn't spectacular though and he didnt impact his team the way Duncan did. Wilkins is underrated and people forget how good he was but its just about knowing the game. Duncan is just one of the best to ever do it. The titles and stats speak for themselves.

Basketball is a team sport, I never understood how a title is a way to distinguish one player from another. John Stockton is arguably the greatest PG of all-time, but he never won a title. So in my mind that leaves individual statistics as the point of analysis, but the issue is how do you compare the statistics of a SF to a PF?

You cant so you instead compare how both players impacted their respective teams. Duncan impacted his team on both ends and even thou he had help he was always the driving force behind the Spurs dynasty. Duncan IS #21

But then you also have to take into consideration what position generally has the most impact on the floor. To me a great 4 or 5 will always have more of an impact than a great 2 or 3. Some may bring up Jordan as an example to disprove that theory, but he had another great player on his team in Pippen.

Ok you bring up some good arguments as to why Wilkins is so underrated and i agree but taking it back to the OP original question.. Duncan IS the first player people think of when they see #21. Its that simple. Its tough to compare which player epitomizes a certain number but with this particular number there can be no question. Duncan with his quiet, unassuming, and gentle personality became an icon in this league.. bigger than Wilkins

Wisdom Listens
08-26-2011, 03:31 PM
Also, Garnett with the Wolves never had the kind of support Duncan had in his championship seasons (Parker/Ginobli/Robinson). It wasn't until he did that he won a championship. If Garnett played for the Spurs throughout 2000 I would venture to say you would have a very different idea of who the greatest PF in history is.

Well to me when I hear #21 I think Garnett. Perhaps it's because I'm a Wolves fan, but Duncan doesn't even come to mind. If the argument is not about who is better than there is no argument, it's all about personal preference.

Agreed. I cannot change who you think of when you see number 21 and i dont want to; Garnett was one of the best to ever play the game. However i think most people would agree that #21=DUNCAN

no way does dwight hold anything on John Stockton, all time assists and steals leader, probably for a very long time, I dont even get how dwight is in that conversation

#23 being anyone other than Michael Jordan should be handed a 2 month ban really... not worth being around if you can't grasp reality

+1:clap:

The NBA forum where this happens.

A forum, where opinions happen.

This pretty much is asking w/e generation you grow up in. I was like 4 when MJ was great so LBJ is #23 for me.

Doesn't matter, when you are as well known as MJ no one replaces his number, just like no one ever replaces #3 in Baseball or #99 in Hockey.

whoever said dwight howard for #12 is a ****, John Stockton ftw

no way does dwight hold anything on John Stockton, all time assists and steals leader, probably for a very long time, I dont even get how dwight is in that conversation

you younger people need to take a look back at the older days, DWIGHT SERIOUSLY for #12?

and whats even sadder is it wasnt even one person, it was like 3 or 4!!!

#32 has got to be one of the toughest choices, almost a tie several different ways

He was the first person that came to mind. Be easy
