View Full Version : Who is the all time face for each franchise?

Chill_Will_24
08-24-2011, 05:03 PM
Naturally certain teams like OKC will be easier to find a face for than a more storied franchise like the Lakers (Kereem, Kobe, Magic etc) but which player is the face for your team? What about the other teams? If you can, list your reasons why.

EDIT: This should be a separate thread for each team with a separate poll and discussion for each team but idk if im allowed to do that and plus not everyone cares for certain teams i.e the Nets, Kings, Wolves etc

Toronto is a fairly easy one: Vince Carter, (since he put this team on the map). First winning seasons, first playoff series, and our only playoff series win (vs the Knicks). Almost beat the 1 seed that year too (Philly).

Teams like Chicago, Indiana, Minnesota don't even need a thread.

Exactly. Jordan imo was the face of the entire league, let alone the Bulls. Garnett and Miller were were the clear ones for their teams as well. OKC and Durant too. Lebron and Melo for CLE and DEN. Your right. Lots of teams barely need a thread. All though it would be funny to see if anyone actually voted for Rose in the Bulls one :D You'd be surprised with ppl online

Well since OKC is pretty much connected with the Sonics as well I don't think so. You still have Payton, DJ, Sikma for them.
For the Warriors you got Rick Barry (who gave them a title) and Wilt.

So some teams will be interesting.

Celtics- Red Auerbach

With the Celtics for over 50yrs. Guided the team to 9 NBA titles as a head coach(50-66), 6 more as General Manager(66-84) and one more title as President(84-2006)

Arguable with Russell and Bird, but Red's fingerprints were all over the franchise's 16 of 17 NBA titles. IMO he is the All-Time Face of the team.

Good list. I would probably have Danny Manning for the Clips, can't put blake after 1 year. Wizards/Bullets should probably be Wes Unsled. I wouldn't put Barkley for the Suns, he was more of a 6er than a Sun. Maybe Nash or Kevin Johnson, or even Marion with how long he was there. Cavs, if not lebron then Daugherty, Ehlo, and Price altogether. Alex English for the Nuggets maybe. Pau for the Grizz, or Big Dog Reeves for when they were in vancouver.

I'd think that Zo and Tim Hardaway(not to that extent) had a better case there

EDIT: Wade edges them out because of the ring (Zo was the more popular guy though in that team and was also injured for most of the season iirc)

I think "face of the franchise" has to do with popularity itself and not really achievements. I remember Zo being the most popular guy among Heat fans and the hype for Tim Hardaway back then was not matched by Wade-hype. Shaq was a catalyst figure in 2006. Perhaps people see Wade as the only playoffs hero and rightful "#1 guy" because he's still in his prime though which I can accept. Depends how you view these things.

For the Knicks eg it should be Frazier based on achievements, but everyone will say Patrick Ewing. Mostly because he was more recent, but Walt Frazier defined the Knicks franchise really

It's Wade without a doubt. No one has a close case to him. Zo was, is, and will always be popular in Miami but that doesn't make his case over Wade. Wade holds most of the statistical records of the Heat franchise, has been here for his entire career, has bigger brand value, and brought the only championship with a historic performance.

I said this depends on how you view it. What's a "face of the franchise"? Is it the guy who you like more or the arguable best performer? Do you take it overall or by longevity?

If I were a Heat fan, I'd say Tim Hardaway or Alonzo Mourning would be the guys that reminded me more of the Heat. Sure, Wade won the championship and he gets accredited for that. But is that enough?

Knicks... you can argue Patrick Ewing, Walt Frazier, Bernard King, Willis Reed... Why pick just 1? And if pick just 1, who's that guy here?

Some teams don't have clear "faces" of the franchise. Heat are one as well. Heat fans from the 90s will definitely feel more "Heat" with Tim Hardaway-Alonzo Mourning than Dwayne Wade (and Shaq)

I don't hate on current players. I just hate it when they get overrated. Wade probably is the best Heat ever but what are we talking about here? I'd take this more of a popularity contest over the years instead of best player for each franchise.
P.S: Apparently Duncan, Garnett and Kidd are retired coz I rate them pretty highly...
