Morrow aims to rudely welcome back Wells

After spending his first 12 years in the Majors with the Blue Jays, Vernon Wells is set to make his first return to Rogers Centre in an opposing uniform as the Angels travel to Toronto for a three-game set starting Friday.

But with the recent uproar involving allegations that the Blue Jays have used a man sitting in the outfield to steal signs during home games, Wells' return might be clouded with alternative issues.

"Vernon never did it," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "When he was there, he was not aware anything like that ever happened. And he was there for a while."

Also making his return to Toronto for the first time is reliever Scott Downs, and Scioscia said Downs, like Wells, was not aware of any sign-stealing while with the Blue Jays.

"My reaction is that I don't think we've run across anything like that," the skipper said. "But what makes it hard to believe is that players would leave -- if something like that is going on and it's team-wide -- when players leave that organization -- pitchers, position players, whoever -- that information is going to blow up."

Wells -- who was traded to the Angels in the offseason for catcher-first baseman Mike Napoli and outfielder Juan Rivera -- was just 1-for-13 (.077) in his only action against his former squad, a three-game series in California in April, while Downs has yet to pitch against his former club this year.

The Angels are gaining on the first-place Rangers, who have watched their grip on the American League West slip to two games. The Angels are 13-2-1 in their past 16 series.

Los Angeles gives the ball Friday to Ervin Santana, who has only gotten better as the season has gone on. The 28-year-old has thrown eight straight quality starts and allowed one run or fewer in his past four.

"I think teams that have high expectations have to keep improving," Scioscia said. "I think the ones that kind of stall and go backwards ... you'll get gobbled up by the schedule."

The Blue Jays aren't quite in the thick of the AL East race, though they've been tough to beat at home and send flame-throwing Brandon Morrow to the mound for the series opener.

Morrow was near-perfect until the sixth inning his last time out, holding the Orioles at bay until Adam Jones smacked a three-run homer, eventually serving Morrow his sixth loss of the season.

"I missed my spot on probably three pitches all night," Morrow said. "I was placing the ball pretty much wherever I wanted it, 95 up to almost 100 mph. So I was feeling good."

Angels: Pineiro staying in bullpen -- for now
Joel Pineiro pitched out of the bullpen for the first time since 2008, tossing three innings in Wednesday's 9-3 loss to the Yankees, and despite allowing three runs, Scioscia said his final inning of work was an encouraging sign.

"Our long-term goal with Joel, our goal this season, is to get him back pitching well enough to be in rotation," Scioscia said. "That's something that would be important to us, but we'll see."

Pineiro had been in the rotation all season, but his recent struggles (0-3 with a 14.85 ERA over his last four starts) earned him a demotion.

The club still has yet to name a starter for Monday's series opener against the Rangers, and Pineiro could be in the mix, as Scioscia said it would be somebody currently with the club.

Blue Jays: Encarnacion on a roll
With an RBI single in the fourth inning of Thursday's 10-3 loss to the A's, Edwin Encarnacion extended his hitting streak to 10 games. Since July 7, he leads the Major Leagues with an on-base percentage of .478.

Encarnacion, who has spent most of his time this season at first, third and as the club's designated hitter, took fly balls in the outfield.

"This is about making the most of the remaining two months that we have," said Toronto manager John Farrell. "We're ever evaluating players. Edwin has done an outstanding job at the plate, he's in a run right now at the plate that I think everyone's been accustomed to from what he did a year ago."

Encarnacion has raised his average from .240 to .282 over the past month, though he has just 10 home runs in 330 at-bats this season after hitting 21 last year.

Worth noting
The Angels need one more stolen base to tally 100 this year, which would mark the 11th consecutive season the Halos have swiped 100 bags -- the longest active streak in baseball.

While first baseman Mark Trumbo is on pace to become the first Angels rookie to lead the team in homers and RBIs, his manager believes he should be in contention for AL Rookie of the Year.

"On the offensive side, we haven't had a whole lot of things happen, but Mark's been right in the middle of everything," Scioscia said. "That's why I think he'd be in the running."

Colby Rasmus was 0-for-4 on Thursday, lowering his average to .231 since coming to the Blue Jays from the Cardinals.

Over/Under of 7.5 runs for the entire series for the Jays?

I'll say under, it seems like Santana and Weaver always own us.

If there is an upside to this series its that we have our three best starters going as well. Jered is sick but I love Ricky and the Angels offence is less potent than an old age home.

If we are under 15 and we sign a type a FA we won't lose our pick right?

Yup. That's my point. I'm not saying throw games but, putting EE a SS and bring up a few of the A and rookie league boys to the show for a few games. Plus, Joey Bats needs a rest. ;-)

It's just means so much and can help the team but, everyone loses their nut when you talk about it. I think AA does things from the front office with this in mind and long term it could really help the team. We'll see.

Hill has been on fire in August. 172/219/207 (that's a 426 OPS, for the record). Why are they still batting him 7th, let alone in front of Molina...or well...anybody?

And for a follow up, can I play 2B for the Jays? Because clearly they don't care about getting production from second, and I could really use the cash.

Sometimes in the same inning too. Sometimes he comes in and just dominates somebody and then just like leaves one over the middle or something. He did it in the first 2 innings. Just got back from the game.. what a terrible display but i went to the ballpark expecting it.

Morrow is way too damn inconsistent and his teammates sure love to **** him over with careless errors. Offense was terrible as usual against Santana with Jose just looking way off. I dunno what is wrong with him but something is.

Finally, I was glad that everyone at the ballpark was cheering for him and the hat tip was really classy. However, as soon as he got past 2nd base on that HR trot, half the people including me started booing which is only right. I'm gonna boo a HR by the opposition even if Jesus Christ hit it

When he tried to stttttrreeettch it out to a triple it made me laugh and reminded me of Cecil Fielder. I used to have a picture of Big Daddy trying to steal 2nd and in the picture the 2nd baseman is already waiting with the ball in glove for a sliding Fielder. He didn't try to tag a bag very often but when he did it was always an amusing event. Its ugly but I think Molina might be a shade quicker !:D

Lineup:

Escobar SS
Thames LF
Encarnacion 1B
Lind DH
Arencibia C
Teahen RF
Lawrie 3B
Davis CF
McDonald 2B

The most bizarre lineup all year. I remember Bautista saying he thinks Weaver is the toughest RH in the game for him to hit off of, and with his recent struggles, Im not surprised he got the day off. JMac in for Hill may actually be an upgrade. Rajai in for Rasmus only might work out if he gets on base, Teahen makes his first start in RF.

Bright side: Lawrie (and JPA) moved up in the lineup.

Im thinking big game for Teahen!! To be honest not having Bautista in there right now doesn't discourage me too much based on the way he has been playing.

J-mac for Hill is good. I think Farrell didn't want us to be too weak so he went with the offensive upgrade at 2nd that he is otherwise to proud to admit

If he has carried our offence all year why is is wrong to be disappointed that he is struggling now?

Its not like he was hot for a few weeks, he was on fire for months going back to last year. He is slumping, but he will find it again before too long

Johnny mac should be our new starting 2nd baseman and lets bench Hill rest of the season because I think Johnny mac should get the rest at bats plus I rather have Johnny Mac over Hill right now. Hill has not contributed jack **** to this team and he is famous for the classic pop ups so it would not hurt to have Johnny mac in there on 2nd base. Johnny mac defence is way way better than hill plus we are not going to lose Hill bat because it has not waken up all season

if we want to contend in AL East, we are not going to rely on EE's hot streaks and we should get ourselves a legit DH. however, he should be a good option off the bench.

3 months ago I would have said no chance... but the way he's hitting he'd fit in on any team.

Guy is just tearing apart the ball right now - and with a cheap option I can pretty much guarantee he'll be a Jay next season. Whether he's still here after that will depend on if he can keep hitting the way he is.
