Watching a game in 2000 between the Raptors and Suns and watching this guy play is hilarious. Guy had a successfull career in the league, but at 5'3" seems to be many non nba players could beat him. Do you think you can beat prime Muggsy Bogues one-on-one?

Nope. If anyone says yes, then I ask why you aren't in the NBA right now.

EDIT: To add to this, he has a high NBA IQ. Even if you're taller, shorts guy have an advantage in being low when bodying up someone.
Unless you are extremely tall and muscular or can shoot the lights out, he'll beat you.

I prolly couldn't because I'm not that tall myself (5'10), even though that's significantly taller. He's prolly ****in mad quick. If i was 6'0+, maybe.

There's a reason guys like Bogues and Boykins make it to the NBA. Nobody here could beat either of them.

Nope.

He killed some NBA players now.

If you do beat him one on one, that's probably because you are really tall.

But other than that, chances are not in your favour.

Defending super quick guys is my weakness, so nope. I have a decent jumper though and I can make acrobatic layups so maybe I could put up 4 or 5 points in a game to 11.

it doesnt matter how tall you are. what are you gonna post up on him ? he will steal the ball off you.

mugsy was a good player. look at his days in charlotte when he was at his best.

let me go ahead and say this. if your not in the nba your not going to beat any one in the nba. period.

Funny how you guys think that if you can beat an NBA player one on one you should be in the NBA... So does that white guy that killed Devin Harris deserve to start for the Heat?

IF you know how to use your height advantage and keep control of the ball then you can beat him... But this goes for any NBA player that you play against; If they get the ball and you play "make it take it".. You wont get another possession

Haha, if you were 6'0 maybe? So if you were the height of all the thousands of others PG's that couldn't make it to the nba during mugsy's career you could maybe beat him? Give the guy more credit than that

Muggsy in his prime?

He would run circles around everybody.
Most people, including current NBA players will run out of gas just trying to stay in front of him.

Muggsy in 2000 was trying to salvage whatever career he had. I mean after all, he was 35~36 years old in that series the OP is talking about. If anything it's a testament to his longevity and effective play despite being so small.

Is this a joke? Prime Bouges is an insanely talented player - double double machine who could cut up most starting NBA point guards... seriously, we'll just have to assume that your post is indeed a joke and you have a greater point you're trying to make.

As an aside - the most interesting thing looking at his career stats is that he had NO 3pt shot throughout his entire career, and never bothered to take even close to 1 a game. Except for in '97 - at 32 years old - where he decides to take 2+ threes a game and nails them at 42%. The following season? Back to 0.3 attempts a game shooting 25%. That's really friggin' odd.

Hell no!!! I'd get murdered. Even at my best and his worst Mugsy would still kill me one on one. There is a reason the man made in the NBA and I couldn't even make my country's national team. The only thing I'll beat him in is probably a dunk contest.

The premise of this thread seems to be that if you're tall and a fairly good pickup basketball player, it is possible to outplay a much shorter NBA player in a game of one on one.

When Dr. J was still in the ABA, he visited my summer camp and gave a clinic to a few campers, one of whom was a 6-11, 14 year old kid who towered over Dr. J.

The two went one on one with the kid scoring a few buckets. But then he made the mistake of taking Dr. J inside and dunking on him. That's when Dr. J took of his jacket and annihilated the kid with a series of reverse slam dunks, steals, and blocked shots. He was amazing.

I have no doubt that Bogues would have similarly destroyed anyone in this forum.

Sorry I have to disagree there. We don't know everyones history. There really can be some guys who played some college ball. Hell I even had a friend who played for University of Oklahoma and he was barely better then me. Just had a speed advantage. I'm willing to bet there are some guys here that if they played college ball, they could beat the worst player...

Great story.

Muggsy is great. My favorite of all-time.

I do think some NBA players can be beaten such as players who got in just because of their size. Also players not in the NBA might be able to beat NBA players who have not much else to their game aside from athleticism.

Dude was a phenom. If i tried posting up on him, he's steal the ball. If i moved out to defend him on the long shot, he'd drive past me. If I gave him space, he'd his the J. This should be everyone's answer. If you didn't make the NBA, I highly doubt you could beat Muggsy. Unless you were the size of an NBA big man, had great ball control in the post, and were very athletic. But that's almost impossible for any huge guy that's not in the NBA.

Players in the NBA generally build their game around a team. There are isolation plays, but one-on-one is generally done either in the post, or off the dribble and there is always help available. Players always have to be aware of the passing lane, and defenders know they will get help, so a one-on-one game is a different kind of playing style. I am sure there are some amazing talents on the black top that could tear it up against a lot of NBA players one-on-one, but the bottom line is that basketball is a team sport, and so such specialized skills such as those developed for one-on-one games do not always translate to NBA potential.

Dumb question. No one on this forum could beat a prime Mugsy Bogues in 1-on-1. I don't care if you're 7-feet tall. He'd blow by you like you're a chair.
Also, you couldn't dribble on the guy. He was one of the best steals guys in the league.

Wow. I'm sorry but you really have no idea what you're talking about. The statement "IF you know how to use your height advantage and keep control of the ball then you can beat him" is so wrong i can't even begin to explain it to you.....If YOU were 6'5 and "knew how to use your height advantage" What would you do? A stiff like 99% of this forum (which probably includes you) isn't backing him down to the basket and turning around and scoring, Mugsy could bench 350 pounds, squat almost triple his weight and had total power house legs. Go ahead and try backing him down and overpowering him when he digs in.
You aren't facing up on him for even a quarter-second b/c he'd steal the ball from you. His hands are to quick and he's to low to the ground.
And you aren't going to turn around and pop and jumper in his face b/c he has a ridiculous vertical (he could dunk) and could get off the ground as quick as anyone in the league.
YOUR only chance, would be to throw the ball up over your head without looking and hope it starts going in. I guarantee you.
