Since there's a lot of Filipinos (like me) here in PSD, I think they'd be interested in this article.

...there is no way to overstate the nation's passion for hoops. The United States introduced the sport more than 100 years ago, when the Philippine Islands were a U.S. territory. Over the ensuing generations, basketball has crossed over from colonial import to a game most Filipinos consider essentially Pinoy....

A lot of filipinos are good at basketball, we're just generally mostly really short. I'm 5'10 and i'm considered tall in my culture.

Billy Ray Bates was an import.

How about Raymond Townsend, the first Filipino-American who played in the NBA. :D

Somewhere, I have video tapes of some of Billy Ray's NBA dunks as a Portland Trailblazer.

He was an incredibly exciting player. Offensively, he'd go over or under his defender.

He was a curious guy, would be basically a crappy role player for the whole season and then score 25 a game in the playoffs.

Yeah, dude! But since he's not PURE Pinoy, you know what I mean? So he wasn't as acknowledge as when Wang Zhizhi or Yao came to play in the NBA since they were pure Chinese/Asian. But I could be wrong. I don't know any back story to this. I just learned of this like two years ago.

Here's his Wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raymond_Townsend. And you could also check him out on YouTube. In 2009 he graced the Filipino Hoops & Heritage Night Press Conference.
