View Full Version : Lockout Draft Order?

Does anyone know how the draft order will be determined if there is a lockout next season? I've heard speculation from using the current standings and re-drawing amongst this years lotto teams to using a weighted system that gives this year's bottomfeeders a greater chance, but still grants opportunity for every team to land a top 3 pick. Anybody know?

Do what the NHL did for their lockout Draft. Do a lottery for picks 1-10 from the teams in 1-10 last year and do the same thing for 11-20 and 21-30.

It should just be the same standings but redo the lottery, but they will probably find some way to screw the crappy teams over.

According to DX, NBA hasn't decided yet.

I'd do two complete lotteries.

1-14 for the non playoff teams. Odds determined by 2010 standings. Draft all 16 spots.

Then do a 15-30 lottery for the playoff teams. Same rules.

Second round decided by record per usual

I wouldn't be a fan of that. It's too arbitrary. The 10th team could pick 1st and the 11th team could pick as low as 20th even though the two teams were separated by only game in the standings. I much prefer the playoffs vs. non-playoffs split someone suggested if they were going to do multiple lotteries. Otherwise, just re-do the lottery with this year's odds and go from there.

Barnes is not the consensus #1 overall pick.

I think Houston Lake will probably go 1st overall out of Duke.

since its a lockout and no games will played, forget the past record, give each team an equal opportunity to draft the top pick. the lockout isnt/wouldnt be top teams fault. if nobody plays then who to know how teams would have finished.

Give the Kings the first pick. Simple. But seriously i'd be pissed if there was no ball next year

they should simply make a completely random lottery.

Lakers should get the 1st pick. .

no way in hell should the nba use the past records because that would be unfair. so unfair! WHY WOULD YOU AWARD THE CAVALIERS WITH BACK TO BACK NO.1 PICK FOR SUCKING! if there is a lockout all teams should have an equal chance of getting the 1st pick.

A couple of people have said it, but just to be clear: nobody knows. Everything people have suggested so far is just possibilities. I don't think they're close to the point of negotiations to have figured it out yet, so we can't know anything until they are. There's no mechanism for determining it other than 'they do whatever they end up agreeing to', so there's no way to know until then.

Just wondering if there isn't a nba season how do you guys think the draft order should go? I think every team should get one ball and they pull it like that. thoughts?

This would probably be the most "Fair" idea, but I really doubt that they do this. They have been looking at multiple ways to improve the parity in the NBA (E.g Hard Cap). If we went for the 1 ball per team method and an already good team such as LA or Miami lucks out and gets the first overall pick (in which there would be a 2/30 chance), you know that some people would go ape **** lol.

I can see them doing something similiar to what the NHL did after a strike cancelled out their season: Each team would get balls based on their recent playoff success (E.g. 4 balls if they haven't made the playoffs once in 3 years, 3 if they made it once, 2 if they made it twice and 1 if they made it each of the past 3 years.. This still gives each team a chance at the 1st overall pick, but it would have the odds of the LA's, Boston, Miami, Chicago and some other contenders down enough so people wouldn't complain lol

Stern and his cronies haven't decided who will win the lottery for 2012/2013 season.

IF they make it that far, I am sure the highest bidder or best story line will win the first pick or two.

ITS THE NBA WAY!

Watch cleveland get the first pick again. They had a tough year, but its not fair that they get the first pick after one bad year.

Avg every teams win between 3-5 years, and determine the 14 teams who has the lowest winning % and do the lottery from there.

thenetslegend
06-29-2011, 03:29 AM
i would hope the draft order stays the same as it was this year but they will most likely change it

bholly
06-29-2011, 05:17 AM
There will be a draft. There is no knowledge yet of how they will determine the order - it'll come down to whatever they agree to and write into the CBA. There is no guideline or basis for them to work from, it's 100% just up to whatever they all agree to. Given they won't need to do that unless they miss a whole season to the lockout, they aren't even going to start talking about it until that happens.

I think this is a possible idea, pretty fair, although the one team that does get the shaft in this process is the Cavs.

But just for fun, the worst 14 records for the last 3 years are:

1.MIN-66 wins
1a.SAC-66 wins
3.WSH-68 wins
4.NJ-70 wins
5.LAC-80 wins
6.GSW-91 wins
7.TOR-95 wins
8.DET-96 wins
9.NYK-103 wins
10.IND-105 wins
11.PHI-109 wins
12.MEM-110 wins
13.CHA-113 wins
14.MIL-115 wins

There could and probably are mistakes, I just quickly counted these up.

If it's the same order the Nets are in great shape. If it's a new lotto same teams, the Nets are in great shape. Win win in my book.
