I was watching the 2001 NBA draft today and saw that Charles Barkley almost joined MJ on this team. Now instead of taking Kwame Brown with the first pick let's say the Wizards pull off the trade to get Elton Brand instead of the Clippers so the Bulls could get Tyson Chandler. Then to have a big body that could at least try to get in Shaq's way, the Wizards sign Hakeem Olajuwon instead of the Raptors. Hakeem and Charles were teamates in Houston. So the team would look something like this:
Player points assists rebounds

Chris Whitney 10 4 2
MJ 23 3 5
Richard Hamilton 20 3 3
Elton Brand 18 2 11
Christian Laettner 7 2 5

Charles Barkley 10 2 8
Hakeem Olujuwon 7 1 6
Courtney Alexander 10 1 2
Tyronn Lue 8 3 1
Hubert Davis 7 2 1
Popeye Jones 7 1 7
Brandon Haywood 5 0 5
Jahidi White 5 0 6

With Doug Collins coaching

My question is what could this team have done? The real team finished 37-45.
Let's just say this team got the 8th seed in the east, could they have beat the Jason Kidd Kieth Van Horn Kenyon Martin Richard Jefferson Nets in a best of 5, then the Jamal Mashburn Baron Davis David Wesley Hornets, then the Paul Pierce Antoine Walker Kenny Anderson Celtics, and eventually the Shaq and Kobe Lakers?

LOL you gotta love how weak the East was back then.

Dream looked done in Toronto so I doubt he wouldve been an upgrade on Haywood. Barkley was good when he played but the way he ended the year looked like he couldnt sustain another season grind. Brands addition obviously propels them into the playoffs, his presence enables MJ to play the role he initially wanted to, facilitator/6th man. A role that wouldve maximized his efficiency for sure.

There are SO MANY what if's in that post it might be a new record.

Saying that. I don't believe they would've stood a prayer against the Shaq/Kobe Lakers. They probably could've beat the Nets or Hornets though I think they'd still be slight underdogs.

You gotta remember, at this point Charles was old and far heavier than when he was good, Olajuwan was a shell of his former self he moved about 4x slower than he did in his heyday, and while MJ could still produce, his efficiency night in and night out was way down to his Bulls days.

I just don't think they would've been able to do much more than the real team did...

I think they win 45 instead of losing 45, but that's about it. I don't think they would go pass the second round against either the Celts or Nets. Though this theoretical as you can possibly get.

Just proves how horrible the east was...

I think that team would have made it to the finals, honestly...

They could have gotten by a Pierce led Celts squad and NJ might have been the least talented team ever to make a finals...

Alot of what if's, but it's intriguing to say the least...

One thing is for sure, that team would have had the most intangibles of any team that ever played...

Not only that, someone off of that team that isn't a star would have been as a result of playing with that squad...

That would have been a solid team. IDK, they might have had a nice playoff run. NOT a championship caliber team by any means, though.

I think they would get beaten in the Eastern Conference Finals. If by some magical chance they end up in the Finals they would lose in 5 games to the 2001 Lakers.

They would have received a bunch of TV time, but that 82 game season would take a toll on them with core of the team including Barkley, Jordan, Hakeem, and Laettner.

It kinda reminds me of the movie "The Expendables"; we can bring the stars together, but we shouldn't expect too much out of them. Probably a first or second round exit depending on the health of Brand and Hamilton.
