View Full Version : People get psychologically tricked by double-digit stats

Ever wonder why people think a player should have ten rebounds instead of nine? Maybe a player should get more rebounds, but not because double figures unlocks a magical key to winning. If the next number after nine was a single digit, then the person would think the player should average another rebound/whatever else.

This goes beyond basketball, my good people.

Probably when it's like 9.8 rebounds per game, I can see someone saying it's 10. Commentators say it that way all the time.

That's why in every stat class they stress that people can't infer or make cause/effect relationships. Stats = Deceiving

Yeah, its why retail stores charge 9.99 and its why Wal-Mart charges 9.88.

However, Brook Lopez had 6 RPG flat. So I guess its closer to 5.99 than 10.

Yea pretty obnoxious how people post how many double doubles a player had as if it held any meaning.

Years ago Yao was at 22-9 or something and people criticized him for not getting enough double doubles. As if a player averaging 15-11 would be superior because of his 2 extra boards.

Also I find it disturbing that consumers fall for the .99 cent trick. With taxes it comes out to +.07 anyways so why get tricked?

People who round prices down drive me crazy. $9.99 = 10, not 9

Not in Oregon. Land of the free, where dollar menu items are actually $1!

We have to use meaningful symbols like that for any bit of information to stand out among the loads of information that are hurled at our brain at an incomprehensible rate. I don't care about stats close to as much as advertisers and marketers taking advantage of this.

But you gotta admit, the extra digit looks pretty darn cool on your stat sheet

The sexiest stat in the world is double digit assists, that's why Stockton and Johnson are unquestionably the best to ever play the game.
