Gibson or Korver are both really valuable. Id probably lean to Gibson. Especially given age and contract.

Went with the unorthodox pick here. I've always been a fan of Kurt Thomas. I think a veteran C like him could work well in the front court with Davis, Amir and Bargnani, providing solid defense and leadership for the kids.

Who did the Bulls trade to get Asik?

three 2nd round picks. Portland picked him at the time in 08. He was projected to be a lottery pick by some actually. But since he was playing overseas...

For me it's Asik easily, as a Bull fan anyway. I love Taj, but Asik's potential is immense imo at least on the defensive end. Taj has been a great defender, but Thibs and everyone on the team has said that Asik has the chance to be the best in the league. With an offseason over learning even a little bit offensively, he can be damn good.

Chi StateOfMind

1.) Gibson
2.) Asik
3.) Brewer

I like defensive minded players.

JasonJohnHorn
05-16-2011, 11:33 AM
This is actually a tough question. Asik has some real potential. He performs very well given his limited minutes. Such is life when you are a rookie on a team that has some real front court talent.

Gibson is a great energy player, and Krover would be great to spread the floor, all three are great answers. Thomas is a great guy and vet, but I would want to grab a young buck for my team, and I wouldnt turn down Watson or Brewer either.

Asik for me. Dude is fast for a 7 footer. He has some quick feet and has some great blocking ability. He needs to work on his FTs and some posts moves. Bulls fans would say he needs to get his cement hands fixed though.

agreed, though i wasn't even really trying to take a swipe at booz. gibson, to me, looks like starting material. all boozer has on him at this point is a post game. taj is a better athlete, rebounder, defender, teammate, person, cook, call of duty player, hell he's even better at screaming like a maniac than booz.

edit: i guess maybe i was trying to take a swipe at boozer. but i really, really like gibsons game.

If I wasn't a Bulls fan I would take Gibson followed by Asik. If Gibson was given starter minutes he could be a 15/10 guy who could possibly be on the future all-defensive 1st teams. If he can learn a post game in the off-season he will be really valuable in the upcoming seasons.

Asik on the other hand is a really good defender and rebounder to he just needs to get some offensive game, if he learns a couple of moves in the off-season he could be a good starting center in the future.

Your usually smarter than this, and by that I mean I usually agree with you more often. On a rebuilding team that DESPERATELY needs a defensive anchor, Asik is the no brainer for your team, he could grow alongside your kids. I only wish the Bulls would have traded him to Houston.

haggis
05-16-2011, 06:18 PM
asik easily.

Taj Gibson will be 26 in June. He's been great this year, but I'll take 7 feet of defense all day every day.

I love having this problem.

05-16-2011, 06:52 PM
As a Knick fan, it's tough to decide between Gibson and Asik.

Gibson can back up Amare and play alongside him when Amare is at C, and he would help on rebounding and defense. Asik however provides the same skills, while being able to play center.

In general, I would take Gibson over anyone else. But in cases such as the Knicks, Asik fills more needs.

I mean for the Magic, Dwight can play 40+mins at center, we have overrated shooters (Korver) and we have a chucking PG coming off the bench (Watson)... What we don't have is an athletic, defensive big with a lot of potential (Gibson) and perimeter defenders (Brewer).

I was just catering to my team's specific needs.

Shoot me for not reading the thread title carefully

I could argue that you could find a suitable replacements via the trade market if you had Asik now that the whole world is starting to realize his potential. But yea Gibson would be PERFECT alongside Dwight. Them 2 alone and I think they contend for 1st defensively

I disagree, I think if we had Asik, we'd get less value for him because teams know we don't need him because we have Dwight, a la Gortat... We gave up Gortat, Pietrus and Carter for JRich, Hedo and Clark lol.

Considering we finished 3rd defensively this season, with guys like Hedo, JRich, Nelson, Arenas, Redick, Bass, RAnderson and Duhon all playing most of the significant minutes on our team, that too without a backup for Dwight (who admitted he was holding back defensively since the trade to avoid foul trouble)... I'm pretty sure we would claim #1 again if Dwight had a guy like Gibson playing his man 1v1 and helping him patrol the paint.

That was pure negligence on the part of the Magic, had they waited for the deadline they could have swung a stronger deal. The need for quality 7FTers is too great to pass simply because you want to play a game. Too many teams need them, the offers would pile up more than getting another quality forward.

Knowing what we know about these players centers like Asik go in the lottery, guys like Taj come around more frequently, especially now that the league has embraced tweeners

I agree Asik would command more value than Taj, but if both played exclusively on the Magic and we didn't know of their potential, Taj would look better than Asik based on numbers and minutes alone... Plus playing next to Dwight would make everything easier for Taj on both ends, whereas Asik would play 8-12mpg and be overlooked until he could find minutes.

Again, if I wanted players of the Bulls bench, a defensive, athletic PF would be the first priority (Taj), followed by some perimeter defense (Brewer)... Asik would be a great asset, but we wouldn't be able to maximize him in Orlando.

Yeah, Taj next to Dwight would be fricken sick. Taj has a 3 ball supposedly he's gunna try next season, no bs. He can play SF too and C vs. smaller lineups.
