View Full Version : Thunder in '10, Grizz in '11,...in '12?

Seems like the West the past 2 years has been producing a "surprise" team. Oklahoma City in 2009-10 grabbing the 8th seed with 50 wins. I don't think anyone had them in the playoffs that year. Now we have the Memphis Grizzlies who won 46 games one win away from the Western Conference Finals. So my question, granted we have not hit free agency or the draft, is which team could be a sleeper next year out West to get in the playoffs and go on a mini run? My prediction right now would have to be the Los Angeles Clippers.

Clippers were the first thing that came to mind, and if The Wizards land D. Williams in the draft then they should be really dangerous.

Williams

Misread the question. For the West, I pick the Kings. You're gonna add one more piece via the draft and will have Thornton to start the year.

For the East I think it will be the Wiz if they get Williams from Arizona. In the West it could be the Clippers, Kings and a slight chance for the Warriors. I wouldn't be shocked either if the T-Wolves are also that surprise team for the West.

The only reason I can see the Kings not being so good is with the distraction of moving. That has to have some psychological effects on the fans and the players. I will never pick the Clippers, something bad always happens to them.

East: Wizards AND Raptors

West: Kings

Definitely see the Clippers as a surprise 8th seed next year. Also, I can see the Blazers coming out of the West in a couple of years.

My suprise team is the Sixers. I know they made the playoffs last year but I predict they make a big jump next year with Turner and Holiday getting even better.... maybe even eastern confrence finals.

Clipps def have a nice young roster...I think Sacramento (Who I think wins the draft lottert Tues. night) might be a year or so away. Golden State is right there with the Clippers. Minnesota...ehh I really don't know. I thought this year they'd double their win total from 09-10 (15 to 30), but they only improved by two games. I think they're 2-3 years away. By the way, I'm just including non playoff teams. That's why i didn't include Denver, Portland, etc.

^i see what yoru saying on the double our win total. At the beginning of the year, i thought so too. But we just had so many young guys and new guys, that was impossible. Do you know how many games we lost in the 4th quarter as well lol? We would have won 35-40 games if we would have won all of those 4th quarter battles. Realistically, we should have been a 25 win team or so. If Beasley can be a little more efficient, and go into tunnell vision all the time lol, i think we can be good if Rubio comes over as well. on top of that, we should have a top 3 pick, so Irving/Knight/Dwill or trade down, which there has been soem specualation that if we get 1 or 2, and Irving is there, we will trade down if Rubio is coming over. Or, if that doesnt work out, we take Dwill. A core of Rubio/top pick or who we trade for (probably should be something solid/AR/Beasley/Klove/Wes Johnson is a very nice young core imo. Im really hoping we break out next year.

I don't think anybody new will approach with the current rosters, at least not in the West. Seedings from 1-8 pretty much have it on lock for a couple more years.

Ellis and Curry are fine. The actualy played well together. Curry played hurt pretty much the whole season with the ankle problem. Just need the right coach and another rebounder to help Lee out...

I am picking Warriors in 2012...

The Clipps on paper seem to be right there but when are they not right there, on paper?.. They have had a top 3 pick for the last 10 years it seems like.. I do not know why the past Clipper teams have not won 45-50 games... It looks like they have all the pieces.. But they don't even win 40... It's always 25-35 wins.. But they do have the talent. Maybe it is coaching..

West: Clippers
East: Sixers

Both extremely young teams who have new coaches and are gelling. Clippers in the East would of probably made the playoffs and put up a little bit of a fight like the Sixers did. Both very athletic, high potential cores. I talked to Craig Smith today and he REALLY believes the Clippers are going to tear it up next season. Guys are getting used to each others games, the new coaching staff and already are meeting as a team working out and training to prepare for next season.

people laughing at the raptors..if you watched the games there were a ton of games where they were in it a lot of times they had the lead going into the 4th..and we were one of the youngest teams in the nba. we didn't have anyone that could close out the games for us if we did we would of been in the playoff race. yall can find stats to prove me wrong or w.e but i know what i saw and they actually beat some pretty good teams as well as they were banging with teams like the lakers, heats and mavs

Isn't that what Kings fans thought about Carl Landry after closing out the season with 19/7 averages then adding Cousins?

As for the original question, every team to make the jump made huge strides defensively. For that reason, I rule out the Wolves, Raptors, Kings, Wizards and Warriors from the 'young teams on the rise' category.

Clippers are the only young team I can see making a playoff push.

Good point actually (not saying this just as a Clips fan). The teams you mentioned are good offensive teams, terrible defensive ones. The Clippers are the only 'young team on the rise' that's very solid defensively finishing the season as the 14th ranked overall defense. For a stretch of about 1.5 months from beginning of December to middle of January this season the Clippers were the 3rd best overall defense after Miami and the Bulls. It's no surprise they went 12-4 vs very good teams in that stretch, won 9 straight home games. Eric Gordon went down with injury late January and Clippers season went down the drain.

HUGE Raps fan here.

There is ZERO chance we make the playoffs.
I predict the same finish as this year. Maybe a tiny bit better.

I do not want a quick rebuild. I want a great chance at the amazing draft next year!

They are under the cap and IMO will add a nice piece to the puzzle
If they can grab Brandon Knight in the draft --- and a strong free agent, I see Big Marc moving there

... lets redo this thread tomarrow night when we know who will obtain the first pick i nthe draft

I love all the people predicting the Kings.

Im guessing that will be due to them firing Westphal, because they will finish the same next season with him. He hates their youth, and he loves to shuffle guys in and out of the rotation.

No Free Agent pick ups either thanks to an uncertain ownership situation if someone can buy them from the Maloofs between now & this time next season.

I'm a homer but I think my Sixers should at least be mentioned.

We're the 4th youngest team in the NBA and if we can trade iggy for some big man help in the offseason, I think this could be a dangerous team.

Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner really stepped up in the playoffs and both being 20 and 22 respectively, they have a bright future ahead of them.

Not to mention Thaddeus Young (22),Jodie Meeks (22), Lou Williams (24), Marreese Speights (23), Craig Brackins (22).

There is a lot of young talent on this roster and they are only going to improve.

I picked you guys in the east :). Clippers and Sixers my 2012 breakout teams. Warriors should improve a good amount too but they are allergic to defense.
