Celtics-Heat Preview

MIAMI (AP) -- Their charter flight home from Boston landed around 3 a.m. Tuesday, and the Miami Heat were back at work less than 12 hours later.

Typically, such a late arrival would merit a day off.

Not now -- not when on the cusp of knocking off the team that has pained Dwyane Wade, LeBron James and the Heat for so long.

Up 3-1 in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series, the Heat will go for the clincher at home against the Celtics on Wednesday night. Miami grabbed control with a 98-90 overtime win in Boston on Monday night, and now stands one victory away from reaching the East finals for the first time since the 2006 championship run.

"This is not a team that you let your guard down against," Wade said.

"No way," instantly chimed in James, nodding as he stood on Wade's left.

It was not a long workout for the Heat on Tuesday, mostly film work and some light shooting. The Celtics took the day off, opting instead to gather around midday for their flight to South Florida, though it was certain that ailing players like Rajon Rondo -- who remains hampered mightily by the aftereffects of dislocating his elbow in Game 3 -- would be getting some treatment.

"I'll be fine," Rondo said. "I'm playing."

Celtics coach Doc Rivers was not available for comment Tuesday. The team had to cancel a planned early evening teleconference because of technical problems.

The Heat do not plan any changes to the starting lineup, coach Erik Spoelstra said, meaning Joel Anthony will remain at center to open the game and Zydrunas Ilgauskas will come off the bench, as will point guard Mario Chalmers behind first-stringer Mike Bibby.

Minutes after Game 4 ended, Spoelstra began telling his team that ending Boston's season would be its toughest challenge yet. He did not back down from that on Tuesday.

"We can expect their best," Spoelstra said. "We know we're getting their best effort and I'm sure they'll play well. We'll have to play better."

Wade and James, who combined for 63 points in Game 4, concurred. They became teammates, in part, to beat Boston after the Celtics thwarted James's plan to bring a title to Cleveland and dominated the Heat since 2007, including a five-game ousting of Miami in the opening round of last season's playoffs.

"This is like an Eastern Conference finals type-of-buildup series," Wade said. "And it's been played out that way."

Maligned much of the season for their collective struggles late in close games, the Heat got contributions across the board to pull it out in Game 4. James made a 3-pointer -- "A backbreaker," Celtics guard Ray Allen said later -- inches away from the Boston bench to tie it at 84 with 2 minutes left in regulation. Wade's long jumper with 2:01 left in overtime was for a 92-86 lead and rendered Boston's crowd silent. And Chris Bosh sealed the win with 24 seconds left, tipping in James' miss to put Miami up by five.

"We executed well down the stretch defensively and offensively," said Heat forward James Jones, who made another key play by fouling Allen and taking away a potential Boston fast break with the game tied at 86 with 19 seconds left in regulation. "I think it was just our presence of mind, our determination. We had mistakes. We made some mistakes."

So did Boston.

The Celtics' miscues were far more noticeable down the stretch.

Rondo missed a layup with 1:11 left in regulation, misfiring on an easy chance to give Boston what would have been a two-point lead. Paul Pierce had to take a wild shot at the fourth-quarter buzzer after Allen and Kevin Garnett collided on a play that could have won the game for the Celtics and instead left them all shaking their heads.

In overtime, Boston had as many turnovers -- four -- as points.

"When our back is against the wall, that's when we show great resilience," Garnett said. "We'll see what we're made of."

If the Celtics lose, some sweeping changes may be on the way.

The core of the team likely will remain the same for at least one more season. But Rivers -- whose contract is expiring at season's end -- has often said the lure of spending more time with family is difficult to ignore.

And a loss may spell the end of the Shaquille O'Neal era.

He eclipsed the 50,000-minute mark for his career last month and time has clearly taken its toll on his body, so there will surely be widespread speculation that whenever Boston's season ends, the final buzzer for O'Neal's career may beckon as well.

But in the Boston locker room late Monday, all that mattered was winning Game 5 and extending the series.

"We've got to get one win right now," Pierce said. "That's the focus. ... It's all on the line."

I'm still scared of this team. They have way too much pride to lay down and keel over to go out in 5 games. I expect their best, and hopefully MIA can take it on the chin and play even better. Hope I'm right. I don't wanna go back to BOS. That's the last thing I wanna see.

Rondo's injury definitely impacted Boston's ability to take advantage of spreading the floor and making the most of their sets, so I'm hoping Rondo somehow is able to use his left hand in his passing, but even if that isn't feasible, as I expect it won't be, I'm sticking with the Celtics because I think they can still take this series.

I was wrong about last game because I underestimated just how good Rondo is and how much his playing with one arm would affect what the Celts usually do, but I still expect that the Celtics will win this game. And the Celtics are not thugs.

Didn't Boston have the biggest winning margin? If Rondo wasn't hurt I'm still sure Boston would have wiped the floor with them in game 4, and they still could have and should have won the game in regulation, even with Rondo severely limited in his ability to pass.

No miracles needed for the Celtics to take this, just digging deep, and the Celtics have shown their ability to do just that.

Boston is toast. I had them winning in 6 but with Rondo's injury I think Miami closes it out next game. Unfortunately, I think Miami goes through Chicago but do think they could lose to the Mavericks if the Mavs make it.

And no miracles needed for the Heat to take this also. They just need to continue to defend and attack the rim like they've been doing. I'm with you that I expect BOS's best, but I expect MIA's best effort as well, therefore I'm sorta confident the Heat take this one. They're just too close to proving doubters wrong to screw up now, at least I hope that's the case.

We very well may see the end of a good run for these Celtics HOFers. I dont see them getting smoked like the Lakers, but Wade and James just seem like too much for the Celtics to handle. Would it surprise me if Boston takes the game tonight? No. Because they very well could be the ones up 3-1 right now. But reality is that they are down 3-1 to a younger and more athletic team. It also doesnt help the Celtics that the heat have 2 of the 4 best players in the NBA.

As someone said before, this year is looking like the changing of the guard. Spurs and Lakers are gone. The Celtics and Mavs are the only teams left from the "Old Guard." I think Miami gets the win tonight...at which point someone will start a thread regarding Shaq and retirement a half second after the clock reads 00:00:00.

Miami must come out and get off to a better start. Crush the life out of the celtics early and try to dominate. If this game stays close, HEAT are in trouble... they cannot continue to play with fire like that without getting burned occasionally. If the Celtics win tonight it will go 7. HEAT need to come out aggressive and crush the Celtics spirit.

Of course Miami can win in Boston in a Game 6. I just feel if it goes back to Boston they will be feeling very good about themselves and I just think it would be extremely difficult for Miami to close them out in Boston. I can't see Boston going out like that at home. It would take an effort like Game 4 and beyond for Miami to win that Game 6 IMO. Miami needed a lot of things to go right to win that game.

Why is that amusing. Of course Celtic fans are gonna pick the Celtics. And even in Illinois, believe it or not, are realistic when it comes to non-Chicago teams. The Heat played a great game 4. Honestly, I picked the Heat, cause I think the Celtics gave there best try in game 4 and still came up short, and the Heat should close it at home. But I won't be mad at all if the Celtics could extend the series.

But I won't be mad at all if the Celtics will extend the series.

i find it amusing that ohio had more heat votes than illinois...thats amusing to me...if ppl in illinois picking boston is realistic than what are the rest of the country picking the heat? it's not realistic to pick the heat? this isn't a matter of being realistic or not it's how that ppl in illinois hate/dislike/not favor miami even more than ppl in ohio

As lebrons stated after game 3, "That's ********." According to you the Heat had 57% of Illinois vote. So 57% of people in Illinois favor Miami in Game 5. Your not making sense.

Anyways, I don't want to debate anymore. The Heat is a real good team. And if The bulls/heat make it to the ECF. I hope it will be an epic series.

I watched mostly the 2nd half of the last game and the Celtics looked like they had it all in their favor other than finding someone to hit some shots. Their defense was getting the job done and they were getting open shots. If they would have just hit some of them they would have gone up by 5-10 in the 4th quarter, maybe more. But, nothing was falling for them.

I'm rooting for a game 7 so go Celtics.

All close games.Lebron missed the first game and Bosh got injured late in the game.Lost by 3.

Second game Bosh shot 1-18 and Bulls still needed a 3 by Deng to pull away.

That's not true. Pierce is having his most efficient season ever arguably. He hasn't slowed down much at all IMO. His best ORtg ever (on an average offensive team) and his second best WS/48minutes ever. His shooting this year was easily the most efficient of his career.

I really think they need to win this one to avoid a sticky situation. Would anyone really be surprised if BOS won a game 6 at home? If they do, that pushes it to 7 and that's always tough. I think it's really important for MIA to win tonight to avoid pressure building.

nenad krstc? big baby? not a fan of this line up

JO is out. Shaq is in a suit. KG can't play 48 minutes. They don't really have a choice.

Boston did maintain that lead like they needed. Can't let Miami hang around while they are playing bad basketball.

Miami playing pretty bad so far, C's need to extend the lead against Miami bench in the 2nd quarter here

So since Boston is likely to give Jeff Green a contract what do you think he gets?

Well they'll start by offering him the RFA tender. Then they'll match whatever he gets, assuming it's not something stupid.

Ideally, he comes back on the tender so his cap hold the following offseason is low. That gives them more cap flexibility.

The Heat are in trouble if they lose this game. C's with momentum + playing home = scary.
