He was also fined $25,000 for taking off his shirt.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Lakers center Andrew Bynum has been suspended for the first five games of next season for his flagrant foul on Dallas guard Jose Juan Barea in Los Angeles' final playoff game.

The NBA announced the suspension Tuesday, two days after Bynum was ejected for the foul in the two-time defending champions' 36-point loss to the Mavericks in Game 4.

The NBA also fined Bynum $25,000 for ripping off his jersey while heading to the locker room.

Bynum expressed remorse for his actions Tuesday, saying his actions were terrible and unacceptable.

"My actions ... don't represent me, my upbringing, this franchise or any of the Laker fans out there that want to watch us and want us to succeed," Bynum said. "Furthermore, and more importantly, I want to actually apologize to J.J. Barea for doing that. I'm just glad that he wasn't seriously injured in the event and all I can say is, I've looked at [the replay], it's terrible and it definitely won't be happening again."

With 8:21 left in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinal series, and the Lakers down by 32 points, Barea beat Steve Blake off the dribble, drove the lane and soared to the basket for what looked like an uncontested layup. But the 7-foot, 280-pound Bynum closed in and threw a right elbow into the 6-foot Barea's ribs. Barea flew sideways to the court and remained there writhing in pain.

The sixth-year center's initial attempts to contact Barea and apologize personally have gone unfulfilled, but he plans on continuing to try to get in touch with him.

"I think he has bigger and better and more important things to do, so I don't know if I'll get a response back, but I will [try to reach him]," Bynum said.

I said 10+ was absolutely ridiculous, and I'm glad the league agreed. 5 is good.

If punches, brawls and running after fans in the stand get 10 or so, this needed less.

Yep. It's fair. The hit was terrible. But I still love you, Drew. Just grow up a little in the offseason.

I can't believe people were saying 20 games and other stuff like that (though I'm pretty sure they were Heat fans).

I'm not a laker hater at all, but Bynum embarrassed like 20 different groups of people when he elbowed JJ out of the air.

I'd have been ok with him being tossed out of the league completely. Go join the WWE if you want to elbow people out of the air.

I'm surprised the league didn't give him more seeing as how sensitive they are and knowing that this was a sensitive matter. No complaints here though.

You are overreacting BIG TIME. At least it was a "basketball play"...hardly, but still. It's not throwing punches or starting fights...5 is fair.

throwing punches would be safer and less damaging than a 12 foot giant elbowing little JJ barea out of the air and having him land on a hard parquet floor. or whatever the floor is made out of...wood? i don't know.

This was about right for the suspension. I didn't expect over 7 games. Good job at acting fairly quickly with this as well.

If OJ gets 10 for drug policy, Delonte 10 for WEAPONS charges, and more like that, how is 5 too little?

alright I just watched it on the tube. WHAT A BTCH! his team is getting their hind ends handed to them so he does that noise. he had a nasty foul on Beasley earlier this year as well correct?

Bynum and Garnett <3 their filthy play.

what rotten sportsmanship. Five games is way too light. He obviously knew he was being a fkng idiot if he walked straight off the court.

Here's a link to it, so we can all see this humiliation one more time.

I am really glad that he apologized.

Oh wait, he's a sore loser that doesn't want to look like an @#$, but sorry it's too late. Guy thinks he is the best center in the game and is starting to get way too full of himself. Has one decent game and calls out his teammates. Starting to look like a cancer.

When did he say he was the best center in the league? He blamed himself for one of the loses, I don't recall him blaming teammates. Could you provide links? If not, then don't make opinions sound like facts.

Prone to hyperbole much?????

Can you give an example where "running after fans in the stand[s]" got 10 or so? Punches also get more than 10 if they are clean punches. I think the 5 games is appropriate, but I also would have totally understood sending a message to a repeat offender with a bigger suspension.

The repeat offender aspect really shouldn't be overlooked (and likely was the difference between 2 games and 5 games). The thing that I find most troublesome is that Bynum is a very smart guy who has had injury trouble himself and has admitted to worrying about having guards around his legs because he is concerned about injury. His repeated cheap shots at defenseless smaller players is just bizarre when taken in that context.

I love how mad people got over this. I've been a Lakers fan my entire life and I've had my friends approach me and say similar things about Bynum and the Lakers to my face. My response: So? I don't need anyone's approval of my team or the players that are on it. I really find it hard to care about Barea either. My Lakers and Bynums big bows will be back again in the hunt for the championship next year. Peace.
