The owners of the Sacramento Kings have dropped plans to move the team to Anaheim next season, The Sacramento Bee reported.

"We are heading back to Sacramento. It was a tough decision," team co-owner George Maloof said, according to the report. "Ticket holders were reaching out to us, and it was the right thing to do to give it a shot at one more season."

The Maloofs had until Monday afternoon to file paperwork with the NBA requesting a move. The team would have needed a simple majority of at least 16 votes from the NBA's 30 owners to make the move and play next season at the Honda Center in Anaheim.

Last month, Sacramento's corporate community presented the NBA with more than $10 million in sponsorship pledges to remain in Sacramento for at least one more season, giving leaders time to put together another effort to build the new arena the Maloofs say they need.

The city, whose mayor, Kevin Johnson, is a former NBA All-Star, has been trying to prove to the league that it remains a viable NBA market.

The team has played in Sacramento since 1985, when it moved from Kansas City. It's one of the NBA's most-traveled franchises, with roots in Rochester, N.Y., and stops in Cincinnati, Kansas City and Omaha.

I am, but it's not over, unfortunately. It's another year bought, now we have to really step it up as a city.

I'm happy for sacramento. That team could have a bright future and no doubt sac town had(s) some of the best fans at games in the early 00's.

Lets now make sure we have a season next year. :)

At least they got one more season to try and get things done.. I wonder if KJ will be able to get an arena green lit before the end of next season.

I hope so. They still need to find a funding source.

Hah! There are a lot more Kings fans than just 5.

I think this is a good move or non move, actually. Southern Cali doesn't need any more teams. Now if they can somehow find a way to move the Clippers.. :p

Yep, and we all know it's not coming from the Maloofs in any way. I just hope they go bankrupt at this point.

The problem won't be Kings fans showing up next year, the problem will remain of still playing in Arco Arena with no viable replacement in Sacramento. I still think the Kings move to Anaheim in the next couple of years.

They made it clear that if an arena deal is not made by next year, the NBA will allow the Maloofs to move the franchise.

Why? We have a lot of people here. The Greater Los Angeles area alone has 18 million people and 2 nba teams. The state of Texas has 25 million people and 3 nba teams. Plus you could add San Deigo, which is the 8th largest city in the United States, to LA fans that could make it to Anahiem for a Kings game and that'd put the population well over 20 million... :speechless:

Who cares? They're just going to try to ripoff taxpayers again and if they don't get their way they'll move anyway. The only good news will be if someone dedicated to Sacramento buys the team.

This is very good news for us Kings fan. But as has been previously stated...it's not over yet. But the prospect for a new arena in Sacramento is looking better than it ever has. The other proposals, quite frankly, were crap. The quarter-cent tax increase ballot measure was good, but our mayor at the time did everything in her power to get it voted down, while the Maloofs did nothing to oppose her and promote it...but that's all in the past. We gotta focus on the future now.

The thing is, most people underestimate the size of the greater Sacramento area. To this point, everything has been put solely on the backs of the residents of the city of Sacramento, which has a population of just under 500,000. While the Sacramento Metropolitan area has a population of just under 2.5 million. That's a pretty big difference. Mayor Kevin Johnson is now trying to reach out to the people and business in some of those areas outside the city limits to help get them to support a new arena. It would benefit the entire area, and KJ is trying to get everyone to realize that. If he can, that would be a big step in trying to get some public funding put into the mix. It's about more than just the Kings too. It's about bringing more entertainment to the city, which boosts economic growth. At this point, there are a lot of entertainment acts that refuse to play at Arco due to the fact it's so outdated, and the acoustics flat out suck. I think most people here don't fully realize the negative economic impact that has on the entire area.

An arena viability study is due to be released in a few weeks. The results of that study will be very telling as to which direction this is going to head. Until then, all we can do is wait.
