Tom Thibodeau of the Chicago Bulls will be named the 2011 NBA Coach of the Year during a Sunday afternoon news conference, reports K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune. The Bulls and NBA have announced a major award presentation for 4:30 p.m. ET at the Berto Center in Chicago. Early reports suggested either Thibodeau or Derrick Rose could be the honoree, but Rose's assumed MVP presentation will have to wait.

Thibodeau led the Bulls to a 62-20 record in his first season as a head coach at the NBA level, a 21-game improvement over last season. Thibodeau currently has the best winning percentage of any coach in NBA history at .756, better than Phil Jackson's previous record of .704.

The Thibodeau announcement should come at halftime of Game 1 of the Miami Heat vs. Boston Celtics series on Sunday. The Bulls tip off their second-round series against the Atlanta Hawks on Monday.

Couldn't go wrong with him or Collins but I personally think Collins should have won it.

CHI added an all-star 20/10 PF and the deadliest 3 point shooter in the league in Korver. Those were their two weak points last year. That combined with an improved and maturing Derrick Rose...well I think just about any coach would win 55+ with that team and I called it before the season.

PHI on the other hand was supposed to be a lottery team, yet they were actually one of the better teams in the east after the 3-13 start. I think Collins changed the culture there and squeezed every bit he could out of that team.

They prolly wouldn't of had the defense they did without him.

in recent mind most coaches of year have been fired soon after getting the award mike brown, byron scott, sam mitchell, avery johnson, and mike d'antoni maybe not the best award for thibodeau

Doug Collins did more with less in Philly. He took a group of young individuals and built a playoff team.

I'm surprised it took until pick 14 for a Bulls fan to bring Rose into a topic not about him.

Now on topic....Thibodeau did a great job, he took advantage of weak teams and did a good job against strong one's. He also motivated the team to finish strong to ensure they held onto the number 1 seed. Well done Thibodeau.

how is that more? one guy took a philly squad that was already in the playoffs 2 years ago and reached a playoff place that was not that much out of the blue and the other dude turned a distant contender that everybody had far behind the lakers, boston and heat into a top contender.

Collins definitely impressed me losing his best player and taking out the best team in the league "record wise"

yeah they should give Coach of the Year to Rose or Paxson.

Not at all... Thibs is more crucial to the Bulls success than Rose. Rose is a special player but i would argue that you could replace Chris Paul, Deron Williams, John Wall, or even Monta Ellis in his place and the Bulls would still be as beast as they are. Ill say again, Rose is a beast but he is just Allen Iverson 2.0 imo except in this situation its not just Allen Iverson vs the world. Rose has a good squad with great complementary players.

I just don't see how one could argue for Collins as COY.

Thibs clearly deserved it more, and Philadelphia's recent "success" isn't credited enough to the players they have. They have good talent. Its not like Collins is the sole reason...

But back to Thibs. Not enough can be said about him.

...John Wall? seriously?

John Wall is essentially a clone to Rose. Rose is more explosive and Wall is faster. That the only reason that i mentioned him. Wall has better court vision too.

Doug Collins made a team average, thats it. That is not a coach of the year. To take an 8 seed and elevate them to the best record in the NBA is pretty damn good. He also helped elevate the game of his best player.
