Knicks- Celtics Preview

NEW YORK (AP) -- Spike Lee and the celebrities will pack the place. ESPN will be there to televise it.

After seven long years, Madison Square Garden is finally open again for postseason basketball business.

And what a perfect time and place it would be for Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire to deliver in tandem after both have been dominant individually so far in the playoffs.

Or maybe it's the ideal setting for the Boston Celtics to torment the Knicks again.

The Celtics bring a 2-0 lead into Game 3 of the Eastern Conference first-round series on Friday, with the Knicks knowing they were close to winning both games but also getting close to going home for the summer.

"We're definitely not thinking about that," Anthony said Thursday after practice. "Game 3 tomorrow here on our home court, it's a must-win for us. ... This is the hardest game by far that we've played this season."

The Knicks aren't sure who will be there to help Anthony. Stoudemire missed practice Thursday but is expected to play after he was sidelined the second half of the Celtics' 96-93 victory in Game 2 on Tuesday with back spasms.

Chauncey Billups hopes to join him, but he is questionable after straining his left knee on a drive to the basket late in the opener and sitting out Game 2.

The Knicks sent much of their core to Denver in the February deal that brought Anthony and Billups from the Nuggets, believing together with Stoudemire that duo would make the Knicks a solid first-round threat.

Instead, injuries forced them to play much of Game 2 with backups surrounding Anthony, who nearly carried them with 42 points and 17 rebounds.

"It's disappointing that it's not there, but at the same time, the way we played the second half in the second game without the two, we're confident we can still get the job done," Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni said.

They key for the Knicks is what Anthony and Stoudemire can do together.

Stoudemire was a force in Game 1, finishing with 28 points and 11 rebounds. But Anthony picked up two fouls in the opening two minutes, sat the rest of the first quarter and never got on track, limited to 15 points and finishing a 1-for-11 second half by missing a long 3-pointer that ended an 87-85 loss.

Anthony followed with his spectacular Game 2, but Stoudemire watched most of it after hurting his back during warmups. Anthony is unlikely to match his numbers if Stoudemire plays, but the Knicks realize their best chance to beat a deeper Boston team is by having their two superstars play well at the same time.

"Obviously some of his production will go down only because some of it's going to Amare. But they should be able to coexist and be good," D'Antoni said.

The game Friday is the first at Madison Square Garden in the postseason since April 25, 2004, and comes 10 years to the day since the Knicks' last playoff victory there, a 92-85 win over Toronto in the opener of a first-round loss. The reputation of the "world's most famous arena" has survived even while the Knicks' has been badly weakened in the last decade.

"In a day and age where so many different cities have remodeled, renovated or built new structures, Madison Square Garden is probably one of the most unique because it still stands and it's still relevant," said Celtics guard Ray Allen, who hit a famed jumper there for Connecticut to win the 1996 Big East tournament.

More recently, it's been a good place for his Boston teammates to show off.

Paul Pierce knocked down the tiebreaking shot with 0.4 seconds left in the Celtics' 118-116 victory back in December, two months after hitting a tiebreaking shot here in a preseason game with 8 seconds to go. Kevin Garnett beat the overtime buzzer with a jumper to give Boston a 107-105 victory on Nov. 22, 2009.

The stakes are much higher now, and the Celtics' execution has been equally as sharp, with decisive baskets by Allen and Garnett in the closing seconds of the first two games after the Knicks had outplayed the defending East champs for large parts of both.

So the Knicks are getting tired of watching the Celtics torture them with their late-game execution.

"I think it was more like a mental exhaustion, just knowing how hard we played, how close we were in both of those games for us to not win any of those games," Anthony said.

New York hosts Game 4 on Sunday, when it will either try to tie the series or save its season. The Knicks believe they will get at least one of them, sounding far more satisfied than Celtics coach Doc Rivers, who said his team needs to play better.

"Our confidence is they didn't play well because we didn't let them play well," D'Antoni said.

Knicks vs. Celtics Playoff History

1990: After dropping the first two games in Boston, the New York Knicks storm back to defeat the Celtics in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs (3-2). Led by Patrick Ewing (29.4 ppg, 10.5 rpg) and Charles Oakley (12.1 ppg, 11.0 rpg), the Knicks are able to advance past Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Reggie Lewis despite each player averaging over 20 points per game during the series.

1988: With Head Coach Rick Pitino at the helm, the Knicks fall to the Celtics in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs (3-1). New York is led by Gerald Wilkins (20.0 ppg, 4.8 apg) and Patrick Ewing (18.8 ppg, 12.8 rpg) in the series.

1984: The eventual NBA Champion Boston Celtics down the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals (4-3). Bernard King averages the most points ever by a Knick in a seven-game playoff series with 29.1 ppg. Larry Bird, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale pace the Celtics.

1974: The Knicks are downed (4-1) by John Havlicek and the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Celtics go on to win their 12th title in franchise history. Walt Frazier and Dave DeBusschere lead the Knicks with 20.5 and 18.1 ppg during the playoffs, respectively.

1973: Led by Walt Frazier, Dave DeBusschere, Bill Bradley, Earl Monroe, and Willis Reed, the Knicks defeat the Boston Celtics (4-3) in the Eastern Conference Finals. New York goes on to win its second NBA title in franchise history over the Los Angeles Lakers.

1972: The Boson Celtics handle the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals (4-1) behind stellar play by John Havlicek, Jo Jo White, and Dave Cowens. New York is lead by Walt Frazier (24.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 6.1 apt) and Jerry Lucas (18.6 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 5.3 apt) during the playoffs.

1969: En route to their 10th NBA Championship, the Boston Celtics are able to defeat the Knicks in the Eastern Division Finals (4-2). In only his second NBA season, Walt Frazier averages 21.2 ppg and 9.1 apg during the playoffs for New York in his first taste of the Knicks-Celtics playoff rivalry.

1967: The Celtics defeat the Knicks in the first round of the Eastern Division playoffs (3-1) behind John Havlicek and Bill Russell. New York's Willis Reed (27.5 ppg, 13.8 rpg) and Walt Bellamy (18.3 ppg, 16.5 rpg) lead the Knicks during the series.

1955: The Knicks lose to Bob Cousy and the Celtics in a three-game Eastern Division Semifinals series (2-1). New York is led by Nate Clifton (19.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and Harry Gallatin (18.3 ppg, 14.7 rpg) in the series.

1953: The Knicks take down the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Division Finals (3-1) behind the play of Connie Simmons (13.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and Nate Clifton (12.0 ppg, 12.7 rpg). New York would eventually lose to the Minneapolis Lakers in the NBA Finals that season (4-1).

1952: Despite Bob Cousy averaging 31 ppg during the series, the Knicks defeat the Boston Celtics (2-1) in the Eastern Division Semifinals. Led by players such as Max Zaslofsky and Connie Simmons, the Knicks grind out a 88-87 double-overtime victory in the deciding game of the series.

1951: The Celtics are swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Division Semifinals (2-0) behind Max Zaslofsky and Harry Gallatin. Rookie Bob Cousy averages 14.0 ppg in his inaugural playoff series.

Think the Knicks will get this one-the crowd will be insane and the team is likely to feed off that.
The pressure, imo, is on the Celtics more than the Knicks. There have been questionable calls and errors with this series-most of which are perceived to be in the Celtics' favor. They're struggling against a Knicks team missing two stars-Anthony played out of his mind in the last game, all for nothing.

This will be a great game, at least in terms of "interesting." Where are either or both of these teams? Tonight should tell.

If there is going to be a blowout(s) in this series, this game is most likely to be one of them. But for which team?

One thing for sure, with the Celtics away from home, if Amare doesn't play or plays very limited minutes and the Celtics still have troubles winning they are past their sell-by date. There is no way the Celtics would be taking this game for granted.

I want this series to go 7

That's part of Boston's motivation tonight, since they obviously wouldn't want to go into the 2nd round with little rest while the Heat had more.

Part of the reason this will be such an interesting game.

If the Heat were struggling with the Sixers, the Celtics taking one of two at the Garden would be more than acceptable for them, but at this point I would think they really want the sweep. Last thing they want is to give the Knicks real confidence at this point.

Feels good to be back in the playoffs after all these yrs as a Knick fan and seeing all those games in the 90's.

We played with a lot of heart in the 1st 2 games and expect to get the win.

Really, it all depends on if we can get back Stat for this game and he is not held back by the back problems. I dont think Boston will allow Melo to get easy looks if he gets hot early and will start doubling up.

The rebounding by the Knicks will continue. With a 80% health Stat I say Knicks, pass that I cant call it.

I want this series to go 6 or 7 b/c man it's just too good to rid after 4 or 5 gms. Plus whoever plays MIA needs it. I'm tired of the East just not showing up in competiveness. Or not showing up in big series w/ star athletes. With that said win or lose I as a Knicks fan am glad that for one night that place will feel like home. I don't think either the Celtics or Knicks are ready for the atmosphere that The Garden (the real one) is going to provide tonight.

both game time decisions, but amar'e is likely to play more than billups. they're saying amar'e will give it everything he has left in him (which is where i think the crowd comes into play to pump him up and make him want to finish the game). billups is like a 10% change he plays, and might play sunday.

KoB's Fearless Game 3 Prediction & Writeup

"Hey did you catch the end of Knicks-Celtics last night?"
"Yeah man I flipped it on in the 4th. The Knicks blew it again."
"I can't believe they had the lead with 19 seconds left but couldn't get a stop!"
"This series is over."

It's a fair opinion. Why would anyone pick the Knicks over the Celtics? This Celtics core is talented, experienced, and has a championship banner. This Celtics core has beaten the Knicks in 16 of their last 18 matchups. The Knicks are dealing with injuries to Amar'e Stoudemire and Chauncey Billups. It’s obvious. This series is over. Or is it? To understand why the Knicks will win tonight’s game you must first understand why they have lost the first two games:

1. The Celtics execute in clutch situations and the Knicks do not.
In the closing minutes of the first two games, the Knicks have shot a combined 2-9 from the field with 5 turnovers. Meanwhile the Celtics have multiple end of game options and have used them to exploit the Knicks lack of a shutdown defender. KG on a backdoor alley-oop. Allen off a screen for three. KG vs. Jeffries in the post. You name it. They can do it. We haven't even seen Paul Pierce dribble to his right and fadeaway at the elbow yet. Maybe he is saving that for Madison Square Garden?

2. The Celtics backcourt has done everything short of pistol-whipping the Knicks into submission.

Knicks PGs - Chauncey Billups / Toney Douglas / Anthony Carter
Stats - 13 for 42 from the field (31%), only 4 FT attempts, 10 assists to 5 turnovers

Celtics PGs - Rajon Rondo / Delonte West
Stats - 20 for 43 from the field (47%), 6 for 9 FT attempts, 19 assists to 6 turnovers

The Knicks PGs are shooting worse, getting to the line less, and distributing at an inferior AST/TO ratio. Additionally, the Knicks don't have anyone to stop Ray Allen. Ray Ray has lit the Knicks up for to the tune of 42 points on 23 shots in the first two games while Bill Walker struggled through a 0-11 Game 2.

3. The Knicks offensive efficiency has taken a huge hit against the elite defense of the Boston Celtics.
The Knicks were the 7th best team in the league in offensive efficiency during the regular season. They shot 46% FG / 37% 3pt / 81% FT while scoring almost 107 ppg.
Game 1 – 42% FG / 35% 3pt / 69% FT scoring 85 points
Game 2 – 36% FG / 32% 3pt / 78% FT scoring 93 points.

Knowing all of this, how can anyone possibly believe the Knicks can come back? The Knicks All-Stars have already proved the league wrong twice in this playoff series. First was the claim, Carmelo Anthony doesn't pass or play defense. Carmelo the distributor is leading the Knicks with 10 assists (should be more) in 2 games. He's forced Paul Pierce into a 6 for 16 shooting performance in Game 1 and an 8 for 18 from the field in Game 2. He's limitted him to only 8 FT attempts per game which is under his season average. Anthony has been denying the ball and forcing Pierce to catch out of his comfort zone. This has been instrumental in keeping the Knicks in both of these games.

Second was the claim, Garnett has owned Amar'e and the Knicks this season. Despite averaging almost 25 ppg vs. the Knicks in the regular season KG has yet to top 15 points or 50% shooting in the series. He didn't even register a free throw attempt last game. The Knicks have done an excellent job forcing KG out of the paint and contesting all his jumpers. There is a reason why shooting percentages drop 12% if the player is covered and the Knicks hustle on defense has proved that to be true.

Rondo still can't shoot a jumpshot. The more Douglas and the rest of the Knicks played off of him the more he struggled. Expect to see more of this in Game 3. He will not have free reign in the paint like he did in Game 2.

Ray Allen may be hot but the perfect recipe to cool him off is loud Garden Crowd with a rejuvenated Landry Fields on him. Fields, after only playing 34 minutes in the first two games, will look to have a rebound performance in place of Bill Walker’s horrendous shooting night. In their 3 regular season matchups Fields averaged over 35mpg and held Allen only 53 points on 48 shots. More Fields = Improved Knicks perimeter = An Off-Night for Ray Allen. Look no further than last year’s finals to see how detrimental that can be the Celtics chances of victory.

Finally, the Knicks are have no where to go but up with their shooting percentages. The Knicks will look to turn this into an uptempo game and bring up the scoring into triple digits. A hot shooting night by players like Shawne Williams, Landry Fields, and Toney Douglas will help lead the Knicks to their first playoff victory in a decade.

Should be another close game. Especially because MSG will be ROCKIN' and the fans should give the Knicks a boost.

But I think when it comes down to making plays down the stretch and executing, the Celtics will pull out the win.

Unless Amare is 100% and him and Melo go into BEAST MODE together.

Uhh I thought it was general consensus everyone but, Knicks fans thought Spike Lee was annoying. He is not a player or coach yet we have to see him on the court yelling 5 times a knicks game.

Shawne Williams is the perfect fit for this team moving forward. Perfect floor spacer. Walker and Fields are out of control but OG Anthony Carter is lookin smooth. This game is just gettin started. Knicks runnin baby.

like i asked earlier what happened to fields he was a r.o.y candidate and all of a sudden he blows

Well, the offense changed and he's not a legit scorer/shooter. He likes a set shot like a Matt Bonner or Bruce Bowen. So, he's basically playing like a fish out of water.

Not sure if the 82+ game schedule has an effect as well but he's thinking way to much but that's also something he is good at.

nycericanguy
04-22-2011, 08:02 PM
like i asked earlier what happened to fields he was a r.o.y candidate and all of a sudden he blows

um earlier in the season he was a ROY type, but he's been different since the Melo trade. rookie wall... lost confidence, w/e u want to call it... he's not the same player since the trade.
