The original data is from basketball reference: http://www.basketball-reference.com/blog/?page_id=9221

I've sorted it to remove the players who played less then 1500 minutes. Perhaps 2000 minutes would be a more accurate cut off but I figured this would include about half the players who played in the NBA (about 200 players) rather then essentially all starters (the 2000 minutes cut off had about 130 players qualifying).

Without further ado, here are the Ratings:

For those wondering what Statistical +/- is and how you calculate it, I'll refer you to these two pages:

Thoughts? I would say the biggest surprise is seeing Ginobili 5th (though he is a pretty underrated player).

Your math skills far exceed mine, so if I were to simplify this statistic, is it basically taking all offensive facets of the game and calculating it (while adjusting for certain factors of the game over others)?

Or how would you summarize it?

Great question. I'll try to give a little summary and background but I will also point you to this article by Dan Rosenbaum (which explains his gory details): http://www.82games.com/comm30.htm

Edit: Ok, that little summary turned into a rather large summary, so if you want a little summary, just scroll down to the end of my post.

Statistical +/- is based on Rosenbaum's original work on adjusted +/- and then his own version of statistical +/-. I believe the guys at basketball-ref just updated the regression but its based on the same work done in Rosenbaum's original article.

Anyways, the concept is centered around on off court plus minus. Now, the issues with looking at just net on off court plus minus should be pretty obvious. For example, in 08, Rondo undoubtedly had a great on-off +/- because he was playing with 3 future hall of famers but the impact of his contributions obviously was not as great. So what Rosenbaum did is he ran a regression and in his words:

Thus, a better measure of player value would “adjust” these plus/minus ratings to account for the quality of players that a given player plays with and against. In addition, it would account for home court advantage and for clutch time/garbage time play. Thus, unlike in unadjusted plus/minus ratings, these “adjusted” plus/minus ratings do not reward players simply for being fortunate to being playing with teammates better than their opponents.

This is what his adjusted +/- is. Using adjusted +/-, he was able to come up with statistical +/-, as he explains here:

Perhaps more importantly, with these adjusted plus/minus ratings I am able to estimate what game statistics predict better performance on the court; these results help explain why certain players have such high adjusted plus/minus ratings. It appears that rebounds are less valuable than typically assumed and steals, blocks, and avoiding turnovers are more valuable. It also appears that having three point shooters on the floor helps teams and that players that can do it all – score, rebound, and assist – are more valuable than simply the sum of those game statistics. In addition, even after accounting for all of those game statistics, players who play more minutes tend to be more valuable for their teams. This finding suggests that coaches recognize those contributions to the team that are not measured by game statistics, and they play those players more minutes.

And here:

One approach to dealing with the imprecision of the pure adjusted plus/minus ratings is to use game statistics (points, rebounds, assists, etc.) to measure the correlation between these game statistics and the pure adjusted plus/minus rating. This indirectly measures how these game statistics correlate with point differentials.

The equations and all the gory math details are explained in that article. The guys over at basketball-reference just ran the same regression analysis that Rosenbaum had done on a larger set of data and came up with new coefficients. The idea behind it is basically the same as what Rosenbaum did in his original work.

If it seems really overwhelming, don't feel like you're alone. I think the only way to truly understand what he did is to do it out yourself (if the explanation isn't good enough for you).

Fortunately, Eli W at Count the Basket outlined how you can do it out:
http://www.countthebasket.com/blog/2008/06/01/calculating-adjusted-plus-minus/

Unfortunately for me, he was using Excel 2007, which I don't have. I have Open Office and Excel 2003 (which is too old) so I'm still trying to figure out how to get past that hurdle.

Here's the explanation (with the gory details) for splitting it into Offensive and Defensive Adjusted +/-:
http://www.countthebasket.com/blog/2008/06/03/offensive-and-defensive-adjusted-plus-minus/

The simple explanation is that its a blend of box score statistics and adjusted +/- (which accounts for a players teammates unlike net on off court +/-). And of course the whole point of adjusted +/- is to try to pick up the contributions that a player makes that isn't picked up in the box score (such as setting screens, playing good man defense, etc.). I hope this helps.

Edit: Also something to remember is that minutes played are very important in these totals. The more minutes a player has played, the more accurate the number is likely to be.

One way to look at this is that guys like Ginobili, Tony Allen, Nene, etc. (guys who you wouldn't expect to be rated as high as they are) are doing something thats not showing up in the box score to help their team win.

I'll post the Offensive SPM and Defensive SPM at some point, so you can see the leaders in each of those categories. (You could see that at the bball-ref link but then you'd have to sift through the low minute guys like John Lucas and Patrick Ewing who have the best DSPM but have only played 10 and 18 minutes respectively)

It's very impressive how accurate this +/i rates the players.
Kevin Martin - tremendous offensive player, terrible defensive player and the numbers have him at a strong 5.83 offensive but a terrible -1.97 defense.

OSPM is Offensive Statistical +/- (Plus Minus), DSPM is Defensive Statistical +/- and SPM is Statistical +/-

The fact that Noah and Brewer are near the top and Rose has a negative value proves how much more valuable this is than DRtg.

Yeah, there appear to be some advantages when looking at the players rated at the top of DSPM. For example, Boozer is not rated as highly. Everyone knows he's a terrible defender but he's been put in a much better scheme. Naturally, he's going to appear to be better defensively then he actually is. With DRtg, that leads to him being 7th in the NBA. With DSPM, he's lower (23rd I think).

One person who's rated really highly who I don't think is that good of a defender is Blair but then he's 11th in DRtg too.

Some good: Sefolosha, Ariza and Gerald Wallace show up as good defenders.

One thing that is also apparent is that players from the same team aren't lumped together at the top like DRtg.

I'd love to get a good debate going on as to the merits of DSPM vs. DRtg. They both use box score statistics but DSPM obviously also incorporates +/- numbers as well.

Edit: KnicksorBust, I'm sure you're wondering if they keep track of this during the year. I asked the guys over at bball-ref and they said they were still considering it. But as of right now, you can't use the play index or player pages to see a player's SPM. It's unfortunate because I really like the stat.
