Yeah I'd say Aldridge is a great answer. Someone else that comes to mind, career wise at least, is Andre Miller.

Russell Westbrook - to a casual fan, he might get overlooked by the likes of cp3, rose, d.will, rondo, and nash
LaMarcus Aldridge - has become a star this year, but since he is on the PTB he isn't as popular
Monta Ellis - GOAT, jk, but he is still a very very good player
Kevin Martin - one of the best offensive players in the game

LMA isn't a superstar especially after one season. The term superstar is thrown around way too much. I'd say he is a star at this moment. A superstar says that he is an elite player as in top 10 at the very least.

I think being in the ASG changed that.

I'd say Aaron Afflalo. Aldridge fit that until the past year and a half, then he started to be on BSPN more.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that Monta Ellis is overrated by all including the casual fans.

But I think Russell Westbrook and LaMarcus Aldridge are great to put on the list. Monroe doesn't make it for me because he had mediocre numbers on a terrible team so of course casual fans haven't heard of him. (And Derrick Rose, are you serious??? If they don't know who he is now, they can't even be casual fans). And most of the other names getting put up are obvious that casual fans don't know them, because they are glorified role players, so what do you expect?

I know a lot of dudes who just follow the big teams/storylines during the regular season (and the home team), then watch the players. I'd qualify that as a casual fan, and those kinds of guys largely have no clue Andrew Bogut is, even though he's arguably the games 2nd best center.

@Kingbrent - Steph Curry? He was a top 3 name in college hoops and a top 3 name as a rookie. Every casual fan knows Curry.

You basketball junkies ( I am more of a functional basketball fan-able to do my job at work w/o checking the internet for basketball gossip) have no perspective. The casual fan only watches the playoffs (maybe just the Finals), All-Star game, Christmas and Thanksgiving games and maybe the Olympics. Lamarcus Aldridge, Ty Lawson, Zac Randolph, Al Horford and maybe Danny Granger. Guys who led their teams to the playoffs and haven't been to an all-star game (except Horford). Now casually expound to the casual fan after casual sex.

Describe "Casual fan" to me.

Being NBA fans, how do we know who people haven't heard of.

Do you mean someone who only watches during the playoffs,or only if the local team is good.

It would most likely be someone who just broke out this year(to be a star),like Aldridge,or it could be someone like Joe Johnson who has been good for years, but might not be heard of by a casual fan.

Westbrook is the NBA's best kept secret. IMO casual fans know who KD is, but not so sure about Westbrook. Not sure if his one all start appearance is enough. It really just depends on your view of what a casual fan is, i guess.

Granger made the all-star game and really the only Pacer's player I would say the casual fan knows off of the Pacers. Everybody knows/knew Brandon Roy and LeMarcus Aldridge.

I would say the casual fan knows more than most people here are giving them credit for, so my picks are:

Greg Monroe, Andray Blatche, Andrea Bargnani, Lou Williams would all be finalists, and for me Andrew Bogut would be the top dog. He may still have college recognition, but I don't think enough. And I think it's much easier to overlook quality bigs.

People are confusing me. Does a casual fan only know
Kobe, LeBron, D-Wade, CP3, Amare, Melo, Dwight, Gasol, Rose, Durant

or do they know lets say the top 2 players on every team? Because then the situations would be different

I'd say Kevin Martin first and foremost. He's been around longer than most everyone else mentioned, and is an absolutely top tier offensive player. If he was in a bigger market (not that Houston isn't a big market, it is, but it certainly isn't as big of an NBA market at Boston, NY, Chicago, LA etc.), he'd get a lot more love, and he deserves that love.

And that is??? There are probably 5-10 players who you could honestly say "got snubbed" for every all star game. At least the coaches pick the backups, fan voting is a joke.

There are different levels of casual fans.

1. Watch NBA once in a while.
2. Follow the big name players only.
3. Bandwagoners
4. Fans of a certain team but rarely ever watch and don't know anyone out of current roster.
