"award given since the 1982–83 NBA season to the league's most valuable player for his team coming off the bench as a substitute".

I think that since he played 35 games starting that maybe he shouldn't be eligible for this award, but I like him so whatever.

there is a number of starts to be eligible, so if they have awarded him with it it means he didnt reach that number, so he is deserving hands down.

I'm pretty sure the rule is anyone is eligible as long as they come off the bench more games than they start.

He came off the bench 47 times, and only started to replace an injured player. Its well deserved, and if he keeps it up maybe he can Dwight this award for an couple more seasons :D

I agree with the opinion that to qualify for 6th Man you should not be in the top 5 in minutes on your team. In no way is Lamar Odom a 6th man.

Really? I haven't looked up any stats or anything and I really don't care so I won't, but I will almost guarantee Ginobili, Terry, and Crawford have averaged in the top 5 in minutes on their respective teams for the past 3 seasons.

He was eligible, so he won. Frankly, this has been on par with the past winners too. Didn't Ginobili start for quite a few games the year he won? You're the best player off the bench, so if someone is injured that you can fill in for, then you do it. Terry has followed that in the past, so has Ginobili and Crawford.

Congrats to LO, well deserving!

thats stupid
that gets rid of the other candidates as well
Jason Terry, Thad Young, James Harden, George Hill, Big Baby, Jamal Crawford are all in the top 5 minutes played for their teams...

Guys, whether you agree or not, Lamar fits the qualifications set forward by the NBA for 6th man. Due to injuries, nearly every 6th man gets a bunch of starts. Get over it.

Again, congrats Lamar

I get what you are saying and it is nothing against Odom. He is a really good player and has been a key part of the Lakers titles. I just think the award is meant to recognize unsung heroes. None of the guys you mention fit that category. I would rather the award go to guys like Taj Gibson or Eric Maynor. Players that are important to their teams success but do not get the recognition. Isn't that the point of a 6th Man Award?

ttam68

To those saying he started 35 games and shouldn't qualify, think about the fact that he'd start 82 on most other teams. He's been completely selfless the last few years for the Lakers and has earned the recognition.

those guys are like 7th or 8th men though

and i still disagree
6th man should go to the best reserve, and it was clearly Odom

I dont think he should be eligible. He started in 35 games and also played over 32mpg! Is he really a bench player at all? Which is actually more minutes than MANY starters in the league.

I think it should be stricter limits on this award cause he is basically a starter that the team just wanted to put on the bench.

I can put Kevin Garnett (averaged less than 32 mpg) on the bench and he'll easily win the award as well.

To qualify, all you need to do is come off the bench for more games than you start. Simple enough and Odom qualifies under that criteria.

isn't it 6th man's job to play well for his starter when they get hurt?

i can't think of anyone who can play better than LO when their starters gets hurt and have to play in starting line up.

We all knew that Lamar was eligible so why are some making a fuss now when he wins the award and not prior to the end of the season?

If one should make a case for anyone over LO this should be taken into consideration.

However by the NBA rules LO deserved it.

Congrats to him one of the most under appreciated players in the entire NBA.

Last time we saw a SMOY similar to LO was Aaron Mckie in 00-01

Role G GS MP FG FGA 3P 3PA FT FTA ORB TRB AST STL BLK TOV PF PTS FG% 3P% FT% MP PTS TRB AST
Starter 33 33 1259 185 389 25 84 71 89 18 147 216 50 3 111 83 466 .476 .298 .798 38.2 14.1 4.5 6.5

Mckie MUCH better as a starter than as a reserve. A case could be made that on that basis he too didn't deserve it. Either among all reserves that season Mckie wasn't even the best player I think this season its clear that Lamar is the best bench sixth man of them all.

Sounds like some people think that someone who has to fill in for an injured starter, shouldn't be 6th man of the year. Isn't that what a bench player is supposed to do? relieve a player during the game or fill in when a starter is down.
LO was the best at filling that role this season.

McKie started 32 when he won. The official cut off is over 41 by the rules.

There was no other player who was better off the bench than him because he did it all. Defense, offense, rebounding, play making, and winning.

He also got 96 first place votes out of 117, and became the first ever Laker to win the award

It has already been said and some seem to ignore it, but the RULES are "To be eligible for the award, a player must come off the bench in more games than he starts."

Like the rule or not, he is the 6th man of the year, period.

Kevj77
04-19-2011, 07:38 PM
Well deserved he was the best bench player this year. I don't think the 35 games he started should matter. When starters go down players from the bench have to step up and take their place. Isn't that the job of a bench player also?

daboywonder2002
04-19-2011, 07:41 PM
Last time i checked lamar odom was a reserve. Isn't a reserve someone who fills in if a starter gets injured. Its not odom's fault bynum can't stay healthy. I think thats one of the reasons he won the awards. filling in admirably when bynum was out

I'm happy to see Thaddeus Young finished in the top 3. I think if the Sixers would've won 47-50 games he could've taken the award. He was nothing short of fantastic this year, and he and Lou Williams were the best tandem of bench players in the league this year IMO. Well deserved for Odom though, great player.
