Knicks- Celtics Preview

BOSTON (AP) -- Toney Douglas played well when he replaced an injured Chauncey Billups during the regular season.

There's much more at stake now.

In only his third season, Douglas said he's prepared if, as expected, Billups, the 13-year veteran point guard, misses Tuesday night's Game 2 of the New York Knicks' first-round playoff series with the Boston Celtics with a sore left knee.

Billups is "very questionable," coach Mike D'Antoni said Monday.

If he is out, it will be up to Douglas to direct an offense led by Amare Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony.

"I'm ready," Douglas said Monday. "The hardest part is getting my body ready for that situation."

Billups was hurt late in Boston's 87-85 victory Sunday night when his leg "buckled on me." He limped off the court with 51 seconds left and didn't return.

"It's really sore" he said after watching practice in street clothes. "At this point in the season, this is the worst thing that could possibly happen, getting hurt in the first game of a tough series. I know my team needs me and it's just frustrating."

D'Antoni said it's much more likely that Billups will play at home Friday in Game 3 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers sees a possible trap for his team if Billups is sidelined.

"If you take someone lightly in the playoffs, then shame on you," he said. "Douglas has had a terrific year. (The Knicks) went on a winning streak when Douglas was playing and Chauncey was out. But I don't think that'll affect the way we approach the game. We just have to worry about us."

Douglas averaged 16.8 points and 6.8 assists in the six games Billups missed with a left thigh bruise from March 2-10. The Knicks split the first two then won three straight before losing again.

But Douglas had never played a postseason game until Sunday. He finished with eight points and two assists in 25 minutes, but made a 3-pointer that gave sixth-seeded New York an 85-82 lead with 38 seconds remaining.

"We have confidence in him," Stoudemire said. "I feel like that big shot gave him confidence."

An alley-oop basket by Kevin Garnett with 37 seconds left made it 85-84 before Anthony was called for an offensive foul with 20 seconds to go as he jockeyed for position with Paul Pierce. Ray Allen hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 12 seconds to play after Garnett stuck out his right leg and tripped Douglas -- laying him flat out on the court -- as Douglas tried to guard Allen.

There was no whistle, only the loud cheers of the home crowd.

"Allen made a tough shot. Tony got knocked down," D'Antoni said. "Sometimes at the end of games they let it go. It'd be nice if they called it on 'Melo that they call it at the other end also."

The third-seeded Celtics will also be missing a starter, but that was expected. Shaquille O'Neal sat out the last six regular-season games and the first playoff game with a left calf injury after playing just one of the previous 28 with a sore left leg.

"He's got a different brace now and we've got two (days off) after Game 2 that he can practice, hopefully," Rivers said.

Jermaine O'Neal had a big game in his place in Game 1 with 12 points on 6-for-6 shooting and four blocks in 22 minutes. He missed much of the season with a knee injury.

Until Garnett denied him the ball late in the game, Stoudemire hurt the Celtics with long jumpers and powerful dunks. But Anthony struggled to shake Boston's tight defense.

He was whistled for two quick fouls and sat out the last 10:32 of the first quarter. He scored his first 12 points in the second quarter but just three in the second half when he missed 10 of 11 shots, including a 3-pointer with 2 seconds to go.

"I couldn't buy a bucket last night, especially in the second half," he said. "Shots were going in and out. Shots were short. But I know I can make those shots. They're the same shots I would take over and over."

D'Antoni joked about what it might take for Anthony to get untracked.

"Just maybe get Pierce off him," he said. "He's fine. I'll be surprised if it happens twice."

Unlike the Knicks, the Celtics will have their starting point guard. Rajon Rondo had 10 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in the opener. Douglas, quicker than Billups, might do a better job on him.

"We have to be even more focused," Pierce said. "We haven't done a good job when star players sit throughout the course of the season. I don't know if we've taken it for granted or taken them too lightly when they're missing a player, thinking the team wouldn't play as hard, but we've lost quite a few games with other teams' stars missing."

Still, the loss of Billups would leave the Knicks thin at that position.

"It'll affect us big time," said Anthony, who came to the Knicks with Billups on Feb. 22 in a trade with Denver. "We're losing one of our soldiers, one of our leaders. At the same time, it's go time, it's playoff time. We've got guys that have to step up."

Knicks vs. Celtics Playoff History

1990: After dropping the first two games in Boston, the New York Knicks storm back to defeat the Celtics in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs (3-2). Led by Patrick Ewing (29.4 ppg, 10.5 rpg) and Charles Oakley (12.1 ppg, 11.0 rpg), the Knicks are able to advance past Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Reggie Lewis despite each player averaging over 20 points per game during the series.

1988: With Head Coach Rick Pitino at the helm, the Knicks fall to the Celtics in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs (3-1). New York is led by Gerald Wilkins (20.0 ppg, 4.8 apg) and Patrick Ewing (18.8 ppg, 12.8 rpg) in the series.

1984: The eventual NBA Champion Boston Celtics down the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals (4-3). Bernard King averages the most points ever by a Knick in a seven-game playoff series with 29.1 ppg. Larry Bird, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale pace the Celtics.

1974: The Knicks are downed (4-1) by John Havlicek and the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Celtics go on to win their 12th title in franchise history. Walt Frazier and Dave DeBusschere lead the Knicks with 20.5 and 18.1 ppg during the playoffs, respectively.

1973: Led by Walt Frazier, Dave DeBusschere, Bill Bradley, Earl Monroe, and Willis Reed, the Knicks defeat the Boston Celtics (4-3) in the Eastern Conference Finals. New York goes on to win its second NBA title in franchise history over the Los Angeles Lakers.

1972: The Boson Celtics handle the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals (4-1) behind stellar play by John Havlicek, Jo Jo White, and Dave Cowens. New York is lead by Walt Frazier (24.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 6.1 apt) and Jerry Lucas (18.6 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 5.3 apt) during the playoffs.

1969: En route to their 10th NBA Championship, the Boston Celtics are able to defeat the Knicks in the Eastern Division Finals (4-2). In only his second NBA season, Walt Frazier averages 21.2 ppg and 9.1 apg during the playoffs for New York in his first taste of the Knicks-Celtics playoff rivalry.

1967: The Celtics defeat the Knicks in the first round of the Eastern Division playoffs (3-1) behind John Havlicek and Bill Russell. New York's Willis Reed (27.5 ppg, 13.8 rpg) and Walt Bellamy (18.3 ppg, 16.5 rpg) lead the Knicks during the series.

1955: The Knicks lose to Bob Cousy and the Celtics in a three-game Eastern Division Semifinals series (2-1). New York is led by Nate Clifton (19.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and Harry Gallatin (18.3 ppg, 14.7 rpg) in the series.

1953: The Knicks take down the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Division Finals (3-1) behind the play of Connie Simmons (13.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and Nate Clifton (12.0 ppg, 12.7 rpg). New York would eventually lose to the Minneapolis Lakers in the NBA Finals that season (4-1).

1952: Despite Bob Cousy averaging 31 ppg during the series, the Knicks defeat the Boston Celtics (2-1) in the Eastern Division Semifinals. Led by players such as Max Zaslofsky and Connie Simmons, the Knicks grind out a 88-87 double-overtime victory in the deciding game of the series.

1951: The Celtics are swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Division Semifinals (2-0) behind Max Zaslofsky and Harry Gallatin. Rookie Bob Cousy averages 14.0 ppg in his inaugural playoff series.

We went 4-1 against 500 teams when Billups was out and TD was starting. To be honest our ball movement and offense was more crisp with him starting but we will miss Billups leadership and experience and hopefully melo stops chucking

as long as the refs don't help the C's on plays like this, we have a shot. if Melo's foul was a foul, then so is this... sticking out his foot and elbow! BS

anyways, gonna be tough without Billups. game one was really important. Celtics should thank the refs.

come on dude... even BOS fans gotta admit that if Melo's foul was called, then KG should have been called for a foul too. watch that play again in slow motion. he clearly sticks out his elbow and foot. if they call it both ways, Knicks win, regardless of how poorly they played in the 2nd half... they still win.

and if u would actually read other peoples posts u would see its not just NY fans.

You can use stats all you want but wants the playoff starts all that stuff is thrown at the window. Who would have thought the knicks who gives up 106+ per game and is the one of the worse defensive teams have a chance to win in a low scoring game

Amare who sucks on rebound got 11 boards and pretty much work KG even though he's the 2nd best defensive player.

Lets see how both teams come out game 2 and i expect it to be more of the same as game 1

There were actually a lot more of those in favor of the Knicks in the last game. The problem was that they didn't call the KG trip at the critical time. Thing is, if the refs didn't screw up earlier, the game wouldn't have even come to that point because the Celtics would have had the lead already.

It goes both ways. NBA officiating is the worst in any sport.

Only positive in Billups not playing is maybe Knicks picking up the pace to play more of their game. Hard to see us winning w/o him though.

Jeff Clark from CelticsBlog.

There will be one game where both teams score over 100 points and another game where both score under 85 points. Oddly the Celtics will win the shootout and the Knicks will win the ugly slug-fest. Bonus prediction: Nenad Krstic will get into a fight with Ronny Turiaf during the low scoring game but no chairs will be thrown and Jermaine O'Neal promises not to fight any fans (because according to my other predictions, it will be a home game).

This game should be just as close as the one in Game 1. Carmelo should bounce back and be a bigger factor in this one but I also expect Paul Pierce to have a strong game for the Celtics which should result in Boston going up 2-0 in this series. If Jermaine O'Neal has a game like he did in game 1 and couple that with a better Glen Davis in Game 2, Boston should be able to handle the Knicks.

I think O'Neal and KG really need to step it up with the illegal screens they only committed 15 or so the first game and that simply isn't going to cut it. Also the next time O'Neal is looking to injure someone he should look to injure someone who is more important to the Knicks than Billups, Amare or Melo preferably. He should also try to increase the injury severity the next time as well.

And there definitely was an illegal screen at the end, but there weren't 15 during the game? I don't know if you were being sarcastic or not

As much as Knicks fans are complaining about the biased officiating its all over now. New game, new mindset. Lets blow them out this game so when the officiating goes sour it wont effect the outcome.

As much as the Boston fans are complaining about NYK fans complaining, maybe you should put yourselves in our shoes. Boston played like crap, Knicks went cold in the second half and still had the win and the refs made 2 incredibly game changing calls within a minute of each other which gave you guys the win. If it was the other way around you would also be pissed. I figured by now the arrogance of Boston Fans would drop but clearly they still think they are going to coast through this series. Focus on keeping homecourt advantage because you almost lost that in game 1 Buddy.

We are all fans and we come here to show our passion for our particular teams and discuss/debate other topics. So true that NY fans whine a lot of the time.... I wouldnt say Melo got locked down, it was more like Melo decided to jack up contested 3's while open teammates screamed for the ball... And the fact that my dead grandmother could play better defense then the Knicks...

Knicks will win a game or maybe two in this series, but they will never win a playoff series with Dantoni as coach... Basketball IQ are not his teams strong suit.....

Both O'Neals - when healthy - are better than Perk because they both bring plenty of skills on the offensive end and defensively are always intimidators that force tough shots and blocks. one of two things happen here
1. Knicks lose and their fans are so pissed they complain series should be tied right now if it wasn't for the foul calls. (or lack thereof)
2. Knicks win and their fans are a little happy but will complain that they should be up 2-0 if it wasn't for foul calls. (or lack thereof)

Perkins is the best interior defender actually, you'll miss him soon,in this series or another.

Didn't say he wasn't, just that JO and Shaq's overall games were better than Perk because they bring above average offensive skills to the center position. Perk is an elite defender. Jermaine actually from a skill and instinctual perspective is better (blocked shots, hands, anticipation), but lacks the overall physicality that Perk has. Perk also has better foot mirroring skills. Its really a par though, because Jermaine has always been an elite defender as well.

We definitely miss Perkins though. A rotation of him, Jermaine and Shaq would have been as nasty as you possibly can get, and he was an amazing teammate. His screens made a huge difference too especially for Allen and Pierce.
