DALLAS (AP) -- As the highest-seeded Western Conference team to win its playoff opener, the Dallas Mavericks should be feeling pretty good about themselves.

They don't.

Sure, the Mavs are happy to be up 1-0 on the Portland Trail Blazers going into Game 2 on Tuesday night, and happier still to have won with their defense.

But they also remember what happened last year, when they got giddy about winning a grind-it-out opener at home against San Antonio. Dallas got smacked around in Game 2 and wound up also losing Games 3 and 4 on the way to being eliminated in six games.

"They really came out smoking in Game 2 and were all over us," Mavs star Dirk Nowitzki said Monday. "They were just more ready, I felt like, and then we had to react, and it was kind of too late. That's what the Blazers are going to do tomorrow, they're going to leave it all out there. We've got to be ready for the first hit and be aggressive also, and just go from there."

Last year's Game 2 meltdown was no isolated incident. It continued a trend that stretches back to the high point in franchise history, when Dallas took a 2-0 lead on Miami in the 2006 NBA finals.

The Mavs followed that win with a loss and eventually lost the series. Starting there, they've followed eight of their last 10 postseason victories with a loss. Both exceptions came in a 2009 first-round series against the Spurs, which happens to be the only series they've won since reaching the '06 finals.

It's a bad habit they know they have to break.

"It starts in practice," said guard Jason Terry, who along with Nowitzki are the only players left from the '06 club. "If you've watched us the last two days, we're treating this as Game 1 all over again. I mean, we came in, we prepared, we went at each other hard. Everybody was pretty in-tune about the game plan. It's all about focusing in on the task. Nothing else matters."

A lot of strange things happened in the opener of this series, from Dallas' Jason Kidd scoring 24 points -- three more than he had in any game this season -- to Portland center Marcus Camby having more assists than Kidd.

Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan found it especially curious that the Mavericks took 29 free throws while his team took only 13. The disparity was even more mind-boggling considering Dallas scored only one basket in the paint in the second half. He voiced his complaints about the officiating, and on Monday was fined $35,000 by the league office.

McMillan also was perturbed by his club's wayward 3-point shooting (2 of 16) and the poor production from Gerald Wallace (4 of 13, eight points) and Brandon Roy (1 of 7, two points).

"For the most part, we had open looks," McMillan said. "We're going to get open looks the way their defense plays. We've got to knock those shots down."

The Blazers lost out on hustle plays, too, things that don't always show up in the stat sheet but are glaring on tape. That tape was rolling before they hit the practice court Monday.

"It just looked like they wanted it more than we did," McMillan said. "Those are plays that you must make in playoff games to give yourself a chance to win."

The flip side to all this is that despite doing so many things wrong, Portland was within a basket in the final minutes and only lost 89-81. The Blazers figure that if they can clean up even only a few of these trouble spots then they can be headed home with a split.

For Blazers star LaMarcus Aldridge, Dallas actually is home. He went to his mom's place for a home-cooked meal Sunday night, and has enjoyed being around friends and family. It certainly hasn't detracted from his focus because he scored 27 points in the opener. He also helped pester Nowitzki into making only 7 of 20 shots, a ratio Portland would gladly take again.

"Being at home hasn't really been an issue for LaMarcus," McMillan said. "He's focused on what he needs to do."

Thread title should say R1G2 :)

Also, there is no way Roddy is the starting SG this game. Even if he plays, which is doubtful, he will come off the bench. Stevenson is the starter from now on.

Go Mavs.

Portland wins this game. Adjustment number one for the series will be for Portland to focus on its advantage on the perimeter. Portland has had success against Dallas when they focus on their mismatches on the wings. Kidd, Barea and Beaubois are incapable of defending Portland's physical wings (Matthews, Wallace and Roy.) Look for the Blazers to play small (Aldridge at C, Wallace at PF) which forces Chandler out of the paint to defend either and then Portland isolating their guards in the post.

I don't hate the Mavs at all, they're a great team. Actually, a great regular season team. Nothing I say about them is out of hate, just my opinion that a playoff exit is inevitable. That, and I think Portland matches up extremely well with Dallas. Kidd isn't going to go off like he did the other night, but we'll see.

If the Mavs get to shoot as many FTs in the 4th as the Blazers do all game despite not playing in the paint they'll win.

Basically if the reffing was any kind of even it'd have been a different game 1.

Blazers win this, though I also believe the series will go back to Dallas 2-2.

looks like Mavs fans are already planting the officiating card, just in case:

[Danny] Crawford is the lead official of the crew that will work Tuesday night's Game 2 in the Dallas Mavericks' first-round series against the Portland Trail Blazers. That will make many Mavs fans cringe, given the franchise's miserable track record in playoff games worked by Crawford.

The Mavs have a 2-16 record in playoff games officiated by Crawford, including 16 losses in the last 17 games. Dallas is 48-41 in the rest of their playoff games during the ownership tenure of Mark Cuban, who has been fined millions of dollars in the last 11 years for publicly complaining about officiating.

"Not saying a word," Cuban wrote in an email when asked to comment on the Mavs' playoff history with Crawford.

"I think Portland is very confident with themselves and I think they're very confident in their match-ups against Dallas. Chad, I've never been more convinced that this team is going to win the series. That Portland is going to win the series. In talking with people last night inside the Blazers, they are very, very confident in their gameplan, in themselves and in the match-ups that they have. Portland is feeling very confident in themselves right now."

They're 2-16 in playoff games officiated by Crawford. That is crazy :speechless:

Even if it's just mere coincidence, why does the League allow itself to be enveloped in controversy? You assign Crawford to another series and you move on. Letting Crawford continue to officiate Mavs games makes one wonder if there is fire behind all this smoke.

wait...wait...which is it; are we going to say this guy is full of **** or are we going to start using him as a source when it suits our needs...come on, its Tim Donaghy...the guy the fans and the NBA said was full of ****. Can't then turn and use him as a source for reffing being a sham.

PS - I have yet to read his book. I have put it off till the this off-season because a good friend of mine and huge NBA fan for years read it, then another and now will not watch the NBA. He will only watch College hoops because of what he read.

How is it hard to listen to either? Everyone called Jose a liar and surprise pretty much everyone he named has been proven to have used steroids.

Donaughy said Crawford is proud of his record and the mavs go from 48-41 to 2-16 with him reffing, something that has a .05% chance of happening.

Roddy has decent potential but I'm not as high as him as I once was. He's looked very average this season and I don't think he'll ever become a pg. At best he'll be Jason terry in his career which isn't bad by any stretch. Going forward in the playoffs I believe he can only give us spot scoring in the playoffs. I've really soured on him. He's very young and could turn it around but he's been really underwhelming this season. And he can't possibly help us in this round. Portland has good size up and down the roster and they'll just post him up. And defensively he's atrocious. I've never seen a guy get 5 fouls in 5 minutes....

These 2 teams actually have REAL fanbases. Not Celtics, Lakers, Heat, or Bulls fans that just jump on a bandwagon.... Heat had about 3 guys that posted last year, now they got 300... And don't get me started on the Bulls. Celtics fans are pretty legit, though there are many that have never been 500 miles within Boston. And the Lakers are the biggest crock of crap fanbase in the NBA....

I hate Nates love for B Roy...he just can't hang in these situations anymore and the team seems to gel so much better in a offensive set that moves quicker without him and doesn't focus on the half court set so much.

Its not about who has won and who has not, its about what you see on the floor. I would say both the Thunder and the Hornets look good...but I doubt the Spurs continue to struggle. 2006 NBA finals, last time Mavs had a 2-0 playoff lead.

Reason the Mavs wont go further, from what I have seen so far, is that they can't keep relying on guys stepping up that haven't all season. Kidd averages 7.9 points a game during the season and all the sudden hits from 20. Bench comes up with 40+ points in this one....these things can't keep happening during long playoff series.

The game plan is pretty easy against Dallas...yet they finished where they did for a reason. I just don't see doubling down on Dirk not working in a 7 game series...hell it has EVERY YEAR he has been there in the playoffs...right? Just not enough consistent support...that is what makes a game like tonight so special...its not the norm and its awesome to see. But can it continue against a better defending team in the second round? Doubt it.

Great game for the Mavs, but they aren't gonna win a championship if they continue with their jumpshooting. Awww boo... Nobody said anything about the Blazers being young when everyone picked them to beat us. Miami is playing the sixers and they aren't good. Portland is actually pretty good, but they're just not within double digits of the Mavs.... Just saying

But just know I went downstairs and pulled out my broom. You guys cant score. You play in the 80's.... Again I'm sorry if I offended you or any other Blazers Fans. It's not about you guys its about us. We'll be playing in the Finals.... Go ahead and book us

bookmarked to quote later, if I give a **** at that point which I most likely will not.

The Mavs have never won a championship or I would say they are playing like that decade...

Because they were elite last year or the year before means they're elite now? NO... Have you watched the Lakers lately? Obviously not.... They legitimately look like one of the bottom 3 teams playing in this entire playoffs. Only the 76ers and Pacers look worst. Just saying...

I know I know. I've only watched about 63 of their games this year. Shame on me... They're clearly playing badly now, but does anybody really think they won't get it together? What better team to do it against than the David West-less Hornets? I know they lost game 1. That may mean something to a younger, more inexperienced squad, but does anyone really think they won't right the ship? I don't.

Seriously guys, you gotta shut up. Portland played us tough in both games and if a couple things went different in each game they could of won. Its not like we are dominating them.

I am the biggest Mavs fan you'll ever find, but I am realistic. There is a damn good chance we go to Portland and they even the series 2-2. Now we need to hope we can go in there and get a split and make it 3-1 coming back to Dallas.

Then if we get to the Lakers in the next round, they are considerable favorites. The matchup problems with them are really going to hurt us. You can see it when we play them.

I am blessed to have the NBA ticket so I do watch a lot of games. But the thing is this.. As a team we're so balanced. Sure Dirk is the closer. But we're legit 9 deep. We've got 5 different guys that have the ability to score at least 20... When Dirks not on we have guys they can pick up the slack. We have penetrators, We have shooters, we play defense, we make our free throws (except haywood). Its whatever man I'm done arguing I believe we will win this series and play the Lakers next. We will be done before you guys so Old man kidd can get his rest.

OK.... Seriously I'm done bro. I believe we will sweep this team and be well rested come 2nd round. Portland is obviously the most overrated team in these playoffs. LA is elite, and definately should've been an all star. But they can't score bro. They play in the 80's... They have 1 guy that can give them 20 and we have 5. Wallace is great in the open court in transition but if you get back he's not a factor. You saw when the game slowed down in the 4th qtr he became non existent. Know why? Cuz he has no game. He just runs up and down the floor and runs over people. No handle, Inconsistent shot, and hacks alot. Batum is long and can shoot nothing more nothing less. Brandon Roy+ Wes Matthews= trash... Matthews robbed portland blind, and Roy just looks terrible. He really should consider retirement. Andre Miller is playing over his head and I give him credit. Camby is a guy. Their bench is terrible.... Sorry man but I'm just callin it like I see it.

drobe, i just want to see this talk in the 2nd round. I know we're 0-1 but we'll be there. Last year we struggled vs OKC but it helped us throughout the rest of the playoffs. The year before that Houston beat us in game 1 at Staples as well, it turned out to be a 7 game series that helped us throughout the playoffs again. If there is any team you can never count out in the playoffs it's the Lakers and even Boston. Winning 16, and 17 championships isn't always going to start off the way you want, you gotta fight your *** off for it. We'll talk in round 2.

Whatever man if Portland were winning everybody would have something to say. All I heard was how we choke in the playoffs and Portland was so hot, and they're such a good team. We came out and took care of business yet get no credit for it. People come up with some lame excuse like well you guys are shooting well. Duh!!! Fact

Ok so you can write this down in a sig or whatever it is that you guys do. Leave the other Mavs fans out of it and deal with me. I'll eat crow and you can direct all the criticism and crap talking to me. Outside of an injury to Dirk we will be playing in June. I only say what other Mavs fans wanna say but don't because they have a little seed of doubt that has been planted in their minds from other fans and the media. Everybody thinks this team is the same run and gun team from the early to mid 2,000's that didn't play a lick of defense. I don't buy into what the media is saying, instead I go with what I'm seeing. One prominent sports writer said the Blazers would sweep us. 75% of analysts and PSD alike said the Blazers would win the series. Now that they're getting there *** kicked nobody has anything to say.
Too many people and Mavs fans included believe in what they hear. They hear the rumblings of fans and media talking about the teams from 06,07 and they begin to doubt what this current Mavs team can do. Problem is this isn't the same Mavs team. We can win slow grinders, we can win shootouts, We look like the best DEFENSIVE team in the playoffs right now. We go 9 deep and really bring some quality off the bench. We're a physical team now. WE don't back down. We're lead by 2 future hall of famers that want a ring in the worse way. I'll see all you guys in June and I can't wait to hear what excuses you'll have for me. After the first game it was, well the refs cheated cuz the Mavs kept going to the line. Portland went to the line more times than we did in the 2nd game so whats your excuse now Nate or PSD? You aint got to like us but you gotta respect us. See you in June guys:clap:
