ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- The Atlanta Hawks looked liked anything but a postseason threat two weeks ago, trudging into the playoffs riding a six-game losing skid.

Now they can take a commanding 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven series against the Orlando Magic.

"Oh yeah. We came here with the objective to get two games," Hawks center Jason Collins said when asked if taking two games on the road would be a "death blow" to the Magic. "We put ourselves in position and now we look forward to getting Game 2 on Tuesday night."

The Hawks' winning formula in the series opener was hot outside shooting, keeping their turnovers down and withstanding the Magic's runs.

Orlando's defense is designed to close out opponent's shooters on the perimeter and force them into the paint where they have to deal with Dwight Howard. The Magic didn't succeed at either, and now they say it's a must to even the series in Game 2.

"Our whole focus has been on protect the paint and they haven't been looking to get to the rim a whole lot," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said.

Van Gundy said containing perimeter jump shots and the Hawks mid-range shots are their biggest concerns. He said he counted only eight layups for the Hawks in Game 1. For the game, Atlanta scored only 36 of their 103 points in the paint, but became the first opponent in 16 consecutive postseason games to score 100 points against the Magic

"Even the (Hawks') 51 percent (field goal percentage) was deceptive, because going into the fourth (quarter) they were at 58 percent and that's when the game was decided," Van Gundy said. "So they really had their way with us. And we've got to be a lot better defensively, no matter what we do offensively.

"If we're going to have to score 105 or 106 points every night to win, then we're gonna be in trouble."

The Hawks aren't likely to shoot close to 60 percent for most of Game 2, but they say they aren't relying on that.

Jamal Crawford, who had 23 points in Game 1, said it wasn't an anomaly that they shot so well. He said if don't do that again, Plan B isn't complex.

"Just to continue to do it with five guys," he said. "Continue to make the right play giving up good shots for great shots. That's why we shot such a high percentage. Guys passed up some good shots but we got great shots in the long run, we worked the clock well. We will continue to do things well that were successful for us."

That said, Hawks' coach Larry Drew noted that they can't depend on jumpers against a Magic team that has had two days to make tweaks to their approach.

"We don't want to be a team that relies on just shooting jump shots," Drew said. " ... We like to open the floor up. It won't be a situation of us just settling for the perimeter. We've got to find that balance of inside-out. As dominant as Dwight is on the inside, we can't shy away from taking the ball to the basket. We have to be the aggressor."

But clearly the Hawks' advantage is their size on the perimeter.

Van Gundy talked about the conversations he used to have with former NBA player Bob McAdoo while they were working together in Miami. He said McAdoo told him that playing against smaller opponents always gave him confidence because of the comfort zone he'd get in being able to shoot over them.

"No matter how hard (opponents) played, he knew he could just get his shot over the top and all he had to do was concentrate on making it. He didn't have to rush and adjust and the whole thing," Van Gundy said.

Van Gundy said the Hawks' shooters have similar matchups with Magic 6-foot point guard Jameer Nelson guarding Kirk Hinrich (6-4), and

Atlanta's Joe Johnson (6-7) and Crawford (6-5) both can shoot over J.J. Redick (6-4) when he is in the game.

And that's not even including Hawks' 6-10 power forward Al Horford, who had his way using the pick and pop to create space between he and Brandon Bass (6-8) to drill 15-foot jumpers.

It's why Howard, who earned his third-straight NBA Defensive Player of the Year award Monday, said Orlando's efforts will be put into making the Hawks find another way to beat them.

"It's not our goal to let guys who can shoot the ball well shoot it," Howard said. "We want to make them do something else. Jamal Crawford, he shot a lot of jump shots, we didn't force him to get to the basket and finish. The same thing with Joe Johnson, it was either floater from far away or a jump shot.

"So we've gotta make those guys do different things."

I don't think the Hawks will be lights out again. I also don't think the Magic players other than Dwight and Nelson will show up. I still say Magic win because Dwight cannot be stopped. The Magic perimeter players have to either play defense or make the open shots.

Honestly I worry more about this one than game 3 in Atl. The Hawks play best when they have nothing to lose. They fold under pressure. If we get this one the series is over. If we lose it goes 7.

I am, because I don't think the Hawks are really any better then the Pacers. Both teams have a lot of good talent players, but no superstars. While I think the Bulls could beat the Magic. Since I don't think they have enough around Dwight(Bulls are getting bashed for not enough consistent offense around Rose, but the Magic have even less) to score on the Bulls or the defense to stop the Bulls offense. But they do have a star player in Dwight, who could go off so I rather not have to face him if we don't have to.

Do you guys think Orl was better off keeping Rashard?

Lewis was an absolute waste. He wasn't getting to the line, he wasn't rebounding, he wasn't attacking, he'd literally just camp in the corner. I'm happy he's gone because Anderson and Bass are better for us...but Gil's contract is basically the only contract in the NBA that makes Lewis' look like a bargain.

If anything, the Phoenix trade was worse...just because Richardson has been far worse than Carter, Hedo has stunk...and yeah...

cubswin25
04-19-2011, 08:17 PM
Atl can be a very dangerous team but, I think sometimes they lack an identity.

Yeah but I dunno how much dangerous they are compared to the Pacers. Sure the Hawks were 7 games better in the regular season. But since the Pacers coaching change they have played a lot better then the Hawks. Sure the Hawks core might be a little better with Johnson, Horford, Smith, Williams, Hinrich and Crawford. But I don't think it's much better then Granger, Hibbert, Hansbrough, George, Collison and Dunleavy. Especially since I think the Pacers are deeper with guys like Rush, Price and McRoberts to come in games.

This season. He was fine last year...but this season with us he wasn't getting to the line even twice a game, he was a 12 point scorer (on 11 shots), he was shooting terribly inefficiently from the floor, he wasn't rebounding at all.

yea i dont understand why pachulia collins or horford arent in the game. horford has been sitting the entire half with 2 early fouls . its the playoffs its stupid to sit him the enitre half.

I think Howard forgets he is so strong that his slight pushes that everyone else would get away with literally knock people over. He pretty much can't soft touch people cause it is still strong enough to knock a house over.

There is a higher % of Joe making it on defenders than Smith at 3 though.

It's definitely not over. I am optimistic about the fact that Altanta really hasn't been able to get good shots off at all. Horford will change things for sure...

Hopefully we hit a three or two. Seriously, I'm not going to be greedy, I just want a few.

The other starting three watch: 4-19 shooting.

ManRam
04-19-2011, 09:18 PM
We can't hit a shot for the life of us.

These have all been wide open.

And Hedo just had like two seconds to shoot it, and it rimmed out.

This sucks.

Coming back along. A game where both teams are struggling with offense is never over. And we win a good % of games when Crawford plays well.

That was ugly. We'll start hitting shots soon. I'm pretty optimistic about this series because we were getting consistent looks, we were just missing them. Literally wide open shot after wide open shot.

The defense looked phenomenal today too. They weren't getting easy looks for the bulk of the game.

LeonFSU
04-20-2011, 02:08 AM
Dwight playing all 48 minutes is just ridiculous. As much as SVG pisses me off, there really isn't a whole lot he can do when the Magic literally do not have a back-up C on the roster. The onus is on Otis Smith. How does he still have a job?

rapjuicer06
04-20-2011, 09:56 AM
wtf was hedo jacking up three after three after three for? give the ****ing ball to dwight *****!

ManRam
04-20-2011, 10:16 AM
We would have been fine playing Anderson at center against the Hawks. SVG played Dwight 48 minutes because he felt he had to to win, not because he didn't have a back up center. I guess it is a combo of both, but considering ATL's centers aren't really offensive forces, we could have easily rested him for a few minutes...

The shooters got a bit selfish after a few shots went in. Again, SVG needs to make it clear to get the ball more to Dwight, but a lot of that blame goes on the other players. They weren't looking for anything else but their own shots.

He's a bad offensive coach...I'll finally say that.

MagicHero3
04-20-2011, 10:16 AM
Close game. But long story short, Magic will leave Orlando 0-2. You're done!!!!can't match up, it's like a Lion versus Hyenas, the Lion will always lose. It's Howard vs 9 Hawk players out there.

 how did that prediction work out for ya?
