http://www.bestgrowthstock.com/stock-market-news/2011/04/18/bbva-becomes-the-official-sponsor-of-the-nba-dallas-maverick/

Bbva is doing a great effort there and im sure they will sooner or later want the team to rock their corporate name in jerseys.

this is a common practice in Soccer, in F1 in Cycling in Nascar and so on.

Its Money
Stern loves money
Owners love money.

I hate the idea, but the world is as it is nowdays and Money rules it all.

thoughts?

btw as a mater of fact

Put it on the outside of the arena, put it all over the inside of the arena, put in on the backboard, put it on the stanchion, put it on the rim, put it on the seats, put it on the scoreboard, put it on the court, but for the love of all that's good and just, please don't put it on the jerseys.

Endorsements on jerseys seems to be a European thing. I don't see it happening any time soon in an American league.

I doubt it will happen anytime soon, seems pretty cheap.

We're talking about jerseys. Nascar drivers don't really wear jerseys.

If advertising on jerseys would put an end to the ridiculous amount of TV timeouts we have to endure over the course of a game (which it probably wouldn't knowing David Stern) I'd be all for it. It seems like that's the main reason Soccer teams around the world use them. They play each half with no commercial breaks and make up for it with this. If it had a similar effect in the NBA, I'm OK with it....otherwise, HELL NO!

It can and most probably will happen and the thread poses an interesting question how long before we see them. I it could be addressed under the current CBA proposal, players will reject it, but they also have to pick their battles I don't know if this is one battle they are willing to win, at the cost of another!

I would think within 5-10 years. There is a lot of money to be made in adopting the sponsorship for the jerseys. I don't see 10 sponsors logos being on the Jersey buy I could see each team having one major sponsor on the jersey.

I hope never. I am a huge soccer fan, but sometimes the sponsors ruin the jersey. Unless the NBA allows each team to pick its jersey sponsor(adidas,nike,puma etc.) then maybe I can see sponsors.

they would have to make the jerseys cheaper
You would think so, but they would still be the same price.

No way i honestly dont see adidas agreeing to this at all
Even if the nba decided to add sponsors to the jereseys, there is nothing adidas can do about it.

American basketball, baseball, and football will never have more than a Nike awoken on their jerseys.

I see those pictures, I get there are American sports that have corporate sponsors on their gear, even in popular sports (ufc), but no American kid is gonna buy a jersey full of corporate logos. they'll buy the products made from the companies that advertise during the games, but not the jerseys. It's a culture thing really, having that in baseball, football, of basketball is just un-American.

people in the rest of the world buys soccer jerseys not only regardless of sponsorship but sometimes they even SEARCH for specific years jerseys to have the x team jersey with x sponsor.

at first some people will be shocked, but in the end people caves in and buys it.

Awoken=swoosh.. Damn iPhone.

Anyway, the stadiums are named after companies, the companies names are plastered all over the inside of the arena, everytime there's a 15 second break from play there's a commercial, and every replay is brought to you by a different company, and I'm ok with that, as long as it keeps the jerseys from looking that damn tacky. IF it ever does happen it's not gonna be for a while. Americans can't handle change as much as the rest of the world can. It'll probably happen as soon as speedos catch on.

I think nicknames have a lot to do with it, American sports have named teams and those names are the identifier on the jersey

Euro sports tend to not have team nicknames and Logos almost act as an identifier for the jersey

Whomewhome
04-20-2011, 03:54 AM
Europe has nicknames. I beg to differ.

L'OM = Marseille
Boeren = PSV Eindhoven
Thrylos = Olympiacos
Los Culés = Barca
Los Galácticos/ Los Merengues = Madrid
I Bianconeri = Juventus
Il Diavolo = AC Milan

Those are not counting the English teams. Cause those all have team names. Like the Tottenham Spurs! Red Devils Manchester United!

Soccer teams have had them on for years now, and all sports leagues do to some degree (they contract out jerseys and such so jersey manufactures' get their brand out there). I dont have a problem with it depending on how its placed, but I'm not sure Stern is ready to go there just yet, though with revenue dipping the way it has been, i wouldnt be surprised. If it was just one or two center above or below the name/number on the back, or one below the team logo.... I'm not going to stop watching, but in ten years I'll sound like an old man saying "back when i watched basketball they didnt have and of these damned fangled advertisements on their jerseys!"

Hellcrooner

You got to factor the kind money too.
A sponsorship could have saved the Sonics or the kings from moving, could be the hope to other teams to balance their accounts.

those are nicknames given to them by fans, not technical names of the organizations, The "Boston Celtics" is a brand name

Manchester United for example did not begin using the red devil reference until well into their existence

Spurs is about the only exception

I don't think it will happen in the 3 major american sports. they don't need the additional advertising money. they realize that the income they make on apparel sales will be greater if they don't have sponsors on them and that offsets or exceeds the money they would make by the sponsors....

Hellcrooner
04-20-2011, 09:58 PM
I think people does not know that here you can get both things.

the 100% replica with the sponsor but ALSO clean jerseys withouth the sponsor.

so nope, sales wouldnt go down.
