UNC's Harrison Barnes To Return For Sophomore Season

CHAPEL HILL - North Carolina forward Harrison Barnes, the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Year, will return to the Tar Heels for his sophomore season.

"As an 18-year old, I'm in the early stages of my life journey," Barnes says. "I'm honored and blessed for the chance to play in the NBA. And because of my family, teachers, passion, and work, I have the ultimate dream of one day playing and experiencing a fulfilling career in the NBA.

"Opportunities, both beneficial and life changing, can seem to make the next phase of my journey an easy decision. But I am a student-athlete at the University of North Carolina. I'm here to experience college life, grow as a person, receive a quality education, and be part of the greatest basketball family in college sports.

"The experiences I've enjoyed on and off the court will be invaluable. These experiences will help fuel my journey in the NBA and beyond.

"I look forward to meeting the challenging journey in the NBA, but my decision on November 13, 2009, still holds true. I'm focused on being a student-athlete. And my decision is to continue this part of my journey at the University of North Carolina.

"As a team, we're preparing for a special season. My off-season plans are to diligently work on honing my basketball skills in all areas with one team-goal in mind -- to bring the 2012 national championship home to UNC."

The Ames, Iowa, native earned second-team All-ACC honors after scoring 15.7 points per game and leading the Tar Heels with 67 three-point field goals. Barnes averaged 21.0 points in four NCAA Tournament games and set an ACC Tournament freshman scoring record when he scored 40 points in a semifinal win over Clemson. He was named to the ACC Tournament and NCAA East Regional All-Tournament Teams.

Barnes helped the Tar Heels go 29-8, win the ACC regular-season title and advance to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament.

Sounds like a great kid. You can't fault him either way. A lot of people will say he should go take the money but a the end of the day he's doing what he wants. Already can't wait for the season to start.

Is Kyrie the only big-name freshman who left? I know Selby bounced, but he had a horrendous freshman year at Kansas.

So, next season, UNC has the following nine man rotation:

Kendall Marshall
Dexter Strickland
Harrison Barnes
John Henson
Tyler Zeller

Reggie Bullock
Leslie McDonald
P.J. Hairston
James McAdoo

I see SEVEN first round picks in that line up, and Strickland who will probably be an early second rounder for his defense. Ridiculous.

I honestly believe we can go undefeated. The weakness this season was definitely the three-point shot, and now we have Bullock, who will be better next year, and Hairston who can fill it up from anywhere. We have 3 NBA caliber wings, 3 NBA caliber big men, a fantastic young point guard and some solid role players (McDonald and Strickland).

UNC is stacked now. They have to be the early favorites. College basketball MIGHT be worth watching again if we get enough stars to stay around. I'm not sure if this helps Barnes' development, but it def helps UNC. Can't wait.

I still think your 2004-2005 team is going to be better and even they couldn't go undefeated. I just don't see a team going undefeated in the near future. That's not to say they're not going to be awesome because they will be.

This made my day. I don't see us going undefeated because it's too hard. But I definitely think they are serious contenders to go all the way.

I think it depends on how the new guys gel. The starting line up is going to be pretty damn good, even better than last year, so if PJ and McAdoo can come in and contribute off the bench and Bullock can hit the three off the bench then it's gonna be difficult for teams to beat us.

The main way big teams lose against smaller teams is they have a bad shooting day and the other team has a lights out day. When you have shooters and scorers like Barnes, Bullock and Hairston and a stretch 4 like McAdoo, it's unlikely that all 4 will shoot poorly.

Very excited about this team next year and McAdoo and Hairston but we cant forget about the other freshmen coming in. I cant wait to see Jackson Simmons energy on this team , he is going to be a fan favorite. We just signed Desmond Hubert who honestly might be the best shot blocker in the 2011 class and Stillman White gives us another ball handler and shooter off the bench. White is gonna play next year and then take a 2 year morman mission. So having Marshall , White and Marcus Paige all on the same team in a few years is PG heaven.

The only teams that ever had a shot of going undefeated were the Caliparri Memphis squads that played no one in conference play. It's just too damn hard to do it, I agree.

North Carolina should be ridiculous next year though..

It's an interesting move. He'd have been in contention for the top pick this year, but again, not for certain. If he channels what he had going in the second half of the year for the entire season next year, he should be locked in at #1.
