76ers - Heat Preview

MIAMI (AP) -- One of Dwyane Wade's biggest rivals is back, at the worst possible time for the Miami Heat.

Wade did not practice Sunday because of symptoms of a migraine, a problem that has plagued him for years and kept him out of a game earlier this season. His status for Game 2 of Miami's Eastern Conference first-round series against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday is unclear, prompting at least some mild concern for the Heat.

"He'll be here," predicted Heat forward LeBron James.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra didn't go out on that limb, saying that it's "too soon" to know if the 2006 NBA finals MVP will be available when Miami gathers for practice Monday morning to complete preparations for Game 2.

Wade told the team that he felt a headache coming on Saturday afternoon before Miami's 97-89 victory, playing 35 minutes without any obvious discomfort. Wade scored 17 points in that game, five of them in the final 1:34 as the Heat held off a huge comeback attempt by the 76ers.

"We'll have to see how he feels at the end of the day," Spoelstra said. "We really wanted to be proactive right now and keep him rested and take medicine and we'll go from there."

So while there was some worry at Miami's practice, the 76ers seemed totally loose at the end of their session. A few players shot free throws in flip-flops after the workout, others tried 20-footers with their non-shooting hand.

If the 76ers are nervous about the prospects of getting into a two-game hole -- the Philadelphia franchise has lost all 16 series in which it's faced an 0-2 deficit -- it didn't show.

"The younger guys, they're not getting frustrated. They don't even get it. They're happy to be here, out here playing," said 76ers forward Elton Brand. "The older guys, we're saying we need to attack the rim. We need to put the onus on the refs to call it."

Much as it was Saturday, foul shooting remained key in Philadelphia's thoughts on Sunday.

Here's the good news for the 76ers: They've held the Heat under 50 percent shooting all four times they've played this season. Here's the bad news: They've lost all those games.

It's not the shots the 76ers are defending that are deciding their games against Miami. It's the ones they can't contest -- the ones from the foul line -- that are making the difference. Miami holds a 127-61 lead in free throws taken in its series with Philadelphia this season, including a 39-15 edge in Game 1.

"You've got to put that ball on the deck and drive in there and you've got to get some contact," Philadelphia coach Doug Collins said. "So we're going to keep trying to do that. That's obviously an area we'd like to be better. But we scored 42 points in the paint yesterday, so it wasn't like we were launching jumpers."

Fouls -- for and against -- have been a season-long issue for the Sixers. They were 26th in the 30-team NBA in free throws taken this season, while Miami ranked third in that department. And while the 76ers had three players get called for fouls more than 200 times during the regular season, Wade was Miami's leader with 197.

"They have athletes that attack that goal," Brand said. "We don't attack as much as those guys going to dunk the ball at the rim. So there's going to be a disparity. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, they cause havoc, and (Chris) Bosh underneath, stuff like that. They're going to get more fouls than us. We just have to be more aggressive."

If Wade cannot go on Monday, the Sixers obviously catch a huge break. And if Wade does play, he may have to wear goggles again to protect his eyes from bright lights -- one major migraine trigger.

Wade wore goggles with an orange tint when Miami faced the New York Knicks on Jan. 27, around the time of his last known fight with migraines. He made 13 straight shots from the field during one stretch of that game, finishing with 34 points in a 93-88 loss.

The Heat have clearance from the NBA if Wade has to wear the goggles Monday.

Even with Wade in the lineup, Philadelphia held all three of Miami's stars to under 50 percent shooting Saturday, with James going 4 for 14 and Bosh 8 for 17. James and Bosh did combine for 25 rebounds and a 22-for-25 showing at the foul line.

James acknowledged that if he has to do more Monday, that's fine.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge," James said.

Dwyane Wade is a game-time decision due to migraines

The lack of a go to guy near the end of games will simply cripple the 76ers in this series. I realize that Young was terrific in the 4th quarter of Saturdays game but can he repeat that again? Can another Sixer? If so, who? I am expecting that this series will go 5 games with the 76ers stealing one at home. That being said, it was great to see the 76ers crawl back in game 1 to make a a game of it late, they showed a lot of character and heart in the game, too bad they fell up short.

Nicely said Mr Elton Brand.

said 76ers forward Elton Brand. "The older guys, we're saying we need to attack the rim. We need to put the onus on the refs to call it."

Exactly my point to the sixer fans in the first game thread. People trying to say they did attack the rim the refs just didnt call it. it's not the refs sixer fans.

it really amazes me that I came home got on this and the first thing I see is people talking about how good the Heat are. Please. The Sixers are horrible, missing open shots, playing like a road team normally plays. THe Heat should beat this team by 30 but they are not. Lebron James cant shoot, he gets all his points on dunks and layups WIDE OPEN ONES at that..(which is why he always leaks out when the other team misses) and this is the guy that is going to lead the heat to 8 titles in a row?

Delusional fans gets me mad ima just stop posting on this forum until everything is over with. It is ok to be optimistic and get excited but people go overboard. I feel bad for teams that play the Heat especially at home because the refs like always are going to be the 6th man

i disagree. I think Philly is a very young and talented team. There just up against a team that is clearly better than theirs. They're not a great team yet but clearly they have a bright future. Would i be shocked if they made a run in the 2nd half? nope. No matter who you play you need to come out and take care of business as you can see from the other upsets in the playoffs.

If the Heat win this series they would play most likely the Celtics or Knicks. There is a very, very slight chance they could play the Pacers if there was a miraculous upset, highly unlikely though imo.

No.

The NBA does not reseed. The winner of the Heat-Sixers series WILL play the winner of Boston-NYK...

Bosh has had two really good games. Brand isn't a pushover on defense either.

Good sign for Miami.

Why do players like Wade/Lebron/KG dominate like 3 feet within the 3point line but can't make a 3 for their life? So weird.

J4KOP99

OK. Then why criticize my comment saying "The Heat defense this half has been unreal."

Who cares if Philly isn't good, the Heat defense that half was unreal

I don't believe the defense was as unbelievable as the stats show. I strongly believe that the Sixers not being good had a large effect on their struggles too.

Lebron can't make a 3 to save his life? Come again?

He's far from great from three, but there are times when he is flat out lights out from distance.

Oh meant Bosh? Gotchya.

For Bosh and Garnett - they just don't practice it. Not part of their game. Wade's streaky, but can hit 'em.

OK. Fine.

Miami held a league average offense (literally, their ORtg is the league average) and a team that's 14th in the league in FG% (46%) to 26% shooting and 31 points.

I don't care how you cut it, I don't even get how you couldn't see it, but that defense was great.

I'll give up, you clearly don't want to credit Miami's defense (probably the 4th best in the league)...but that was a great defensive half. They aren't gonna get to 80 points, and they've only not gotten to 80 4 times this year. Blame it on bad offense, but some of it has to be defense (those 4 games were against Chicago, SA, Milwaukee and NOH...all great defense).

Hell, they might not crack 70.

Its the playoffs, their D is going to be crazy good and LeBron and Wade will lay it down on the court to win the championship.

Jeuss man. I have given a ton of credit to Miami in every post so far... But at the same time, how can you give them 100% credit? Some of it has to be on the Sixers too... They've missed countless lay-ups and open shots...

But anyways, I agree. No need to discuss this further.
The Heat are very good and the Sixers are not.

I really think Indy showed their best punches, and they lost. I can't imagine the Bulls allowing 99 points again. I think Chicago will be more focused, and I don't think Indy can replicate what they did.

I wonder if there will be a single game where the refs aren't blamed. The refs could have called every foul that was called on the 76ers on the Heat instead, and the Heat would still be winning. The refs have been fine. That last play on LeBron was iffy, but that's one play.

It's a blessing leading a playoffs game by 20 pts even though D-Wade has only 12 pts. Sure beats having Wade put up 40 pts and still losing.
