Knicks- Celtics Preview

The Boston Celtics and New York Knicks will play at least their next five games against each other, but the first one will look considerably different than the rest.

Both teams may rest starters when they finish the regular season Wednesday night at TD Garden, the same place where they'll open the playoffs this weekend.

"We just have to stay healthy," Knicks point guard Chauncey Billups said Tuesday. "Nothing we can really accomplish tomorrow to be honest with you, just kind of stay healthy. Tomorrow to me is nothing. (In the playoffs) everything will be different, intensity will be different, players will be more focused, it will be a totally different game."

Boston (55-26) is locked into the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference, while the Knicks (42-39) are assured of finishing sixth, which means the clubs will square off in the postseason for the first time since 1990.

The Celtics seemed content to settle into third place even when they still had a chance to catch Miami. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo all sat out Monday's 95-94 overtime loss at Washington.

That result, along with the Heat's win over Atlanta, clinched the No. 2 seed for Miami. Boston coach Doc Rivers said it was a difficult decision, but that resting his All-Star quartet -- something he plans to do again Wednesday -- was more important than seeding.

Rivers said he's looking to "reset the team," which is embroiled in a 9-11 stretch that includes lopsided losses to Chicago and Miami in the past week.

"Mostly it's mental, all the time, with anybody on any team," Rivers said. "They're the best conditioned athletes in the world, so I don't believe in the whole getting-tired theory unless you're allowing yourself to get tired. They just need the rest. And the break. The whole reason is it allows us to have practice with energy, and we need that more than anything."

New York's Amare Stoudemire has needed time to rest his sprained left ankle, which may keep him out of a fourth straight game Wednesday, although he is expected to return for the playoffs.

The Knicks still managed to extend their winning streak to seven before losing 103-90 at home to the Bulls on Tuesday. They led by three at halftime, but Chicago began the third quarter on a 26-2 run.

"They came out and made a run at us in the second half," Billups said. "You could tell that they were playing for something."

Coach Mike D'Antoni's plans for Billups and Carmelo Anthony in the finale are unclear. Anthony has been outstanding lately, averaging 30.3 points on 49.0 percent shooting in his last nine games.

While the Knicks can't exactly send a message by beating Boston's reserves, they wouldn't mind avoiding a season-series sweep. The Celtics have won the first three meetings, although they were decided by an average of just 5.3 points.

The Knicks haven't won in Boston since Nov. 24, 2006, losing eight straight there -- seven since the Celtics acquired Garnett and Allen.

Knicks vs. Celtics Playoff History

1990: After dropping the first two games in Boston, the New York Knicks storm back to defeat the Celtics in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs (3-2). Led by Patrick Ewing (29.4 ppg, 10.5 rpg) and Charles Oakley (12.1 ppg, 11.0 rpg), the Knicks are able to advance past Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Reggie Lewis despite each player averaging over 20 points per game during the series.

1988: With Head Coach Rick Pitino at the helm, the Knicks fall to the Celtics in the first round of the Eastern Conference Playoffs (3-1). New York is led by Gerald Wilkins (20.0 ppg, 4.8 apg) and Patrick Ewing (18.8 ppg, 12.8 rpg) in the series.

1984: The eventual NBA Champion Boston Celtics down the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Semifinals (4-3). Bernard King averages the most points ever by a Knick in a seven-game playoff series with 29.1 ppg. Larry Bird, Robert Parish, and Kevin McHale pace the Celtics.

1974: The Knicks are downed (4-1) by John Havlicek and the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Celtics go on to win their 12th title in franchise history. Walt Frazier and Dave DeBusschere lead the Knicks with 20.5 and 18.1 ppg during the playoffs, respectively.

1973: Led by Walt Frazier, Dave DeBusschere, Bill Bradley, Earl Monroe, and Willis Reed, the Knicks defeat the Boston Celtics (4-3) in the Eastern Conference Finals. New York goes on to win its second NBA title in franchise history over the Los Angeles Lakers.

1972: The Boson Celtics handle the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals (4-1) behind stellar play by John Havlicek, Jo Jo White, and Dave Cowens. New York is lead by Walt Frazier (24.3 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 6.1 apt) and Jerry Lucas (18.6 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 5.3 apt) during the playoffs.

1969: En route to their 10th NBA Championship, the Boston Celtics are able to defeat the Knicks in the Eastern Division Finals (4-2). In only his second NBA season, Walt Frazier averages 21.2 ppg and 9.1 apg during the playoffs for New York in his first taste of the Knicks-Celtics playoff rivalry.

1967: The Celtics defeat the Knicks in the first round of the Eastern Division playoffs (3-1) behind John Havlicek and Bill Russell. New York's Willis Reed (27.5 ppg, 13.8 rpg) and Walt Bellamy (18.3 ppg, 16.5 rpg) lead the Knicks during the series.

1955: The Knicks lose to Bob Cousy and the Celtics in a three-game Eastern Division Semifinals series (2-1). New York is led by Nate Clifton (19.7 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and Harry Gallatin (18.3 ppg, 14.7 rpg) in the series.

1953: The Knicks take down the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Division Finals (3-1) behind the play of Connie Simmons (13.2 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and Nate Clifton (12.0 ppg, 12.7 rpg). New York would eventually lose to the Minneapolis Lakers in the NBA Finals that season (4-1).

1952: Despite Bob Cousy averaging 31 ppg during the series, the Knicks defeat the Boston Celtics (2-1) in the Eastern Division Semifinals. Led by players such as Max Zaslofsky and Connie Simmons, the Knicks grind out a 88-87 double-overtime victory in the deciding game of the series.

1951: The Celtics are swept by the New York Knicks in the Eastern Division Semifinals (2-0) behind Max Zaslofsky and Harry Gallatin. Rookie Bob Cousy averages 14.0 ppg in his inaugural playoff series.

Looking forward to this one and the Nuggets/Thunder series. I anticipate a lot of physicality and bluster. I think the Knicks will put up a fight, but the Celtics will figure it out and win in 6.
The Celtics could really have used Perkins for this.
Oops..I pick the Knicks to win game 1 and then the Celtics will make the adjustments.

Really this series boils down to 3 simple things:

1. The toughest cover in this series is going to be Ray Allen. The Knicks don't have a top notch wing defender to run through those screens whose got the length. Douglas should stick Rondo when he's in and Billups doesn't have the height or speed. Landry Fields is going to have to a hero's job and hope Ray has a series like he did vs. the Lakers in the Finals. Not impossible.

2. Garnett vs. Amar'e this season has been an offensive slugfest. Garnett showing his old form with games of 24-10, 20-13, 24-11 while shooting 70%/50%/67%. Meanwhile Amar'e has scored 27-8, 39-10, 16-11 while shooting 47%/69%/47%. The key difference is Amar'e has averaged over 9 FTA per game in those matchups and Garnett has averaged under 3 FTA. Will Garnett's jumper stay scorching hot or will the consistency of Amar'e attacks to the basket force him into foul trouble and keep the Knicks in it?

3. Carmelo Anthony vs. Paul Pierce is going to decide the series. If one significantly outplays the other the rest of the lineups are even enough to give that team the advantage in the series. This is where I go out on a limb. A lot of people have attacked Carmelo Anthony for not scoring as effeciently as other top players, not being as good a creator for his teammates as other top players, and just being an outright poor defender. Since he's joined the Knicks his scoring effeciency is at an all-time high and defensively he's ready to play. You know how I knew he was ready for the playoffs? Not only did he hit his 2nd game-winning shot with the Knicks over Danny Granger but then he sealed the game with a BLOCK on Danny Granger on the other end. Carmelo has the perfect combination of size, speed, and strength to matchup with Pierce and I believe he will outplay Pierce in this series and that will be the difference.

Knicks in 6 games.

going to game 7 if Boston doesn't pick up the slack. Boston should easily play amazing defense on team with no cohesion at all. basically a two trick pony, Billups and Carmelo. i'm not sold on amare performing in the playoffs, especially the playoffs he had last year (4 rpg? wtf?) on a better team.

Boston in 6 or 7

In 52 career playoff games Amar'e Stoudemire has averaged 24ppg/9rpg/2bpg while shooting 52% FG / 75% FT (59%TS for advanced stat lovers like myself). The Knicks are hardly a two trick pony. Now a 3-trick pony... maybe. :)

I've never understood this mindset. You think we can get away with Billups or Melo having sub-par series as long as Shawne and Shelden Williams play well? Bench is extremely overrated especially with our coach who will probably only go 8-9 deep and play our starters heavy minutes the whole series.

lol. we'll see. This is still the Celtics we're talking about. They play their best basketball in the playoffs anyways.

highly overrated team in the Knicks to make it past the Celtics due to the star power (and the fans on this forum) but this shouldn't be closer than it has to be for Boston, a team on the twilight of their championship contender status.

but i won't be surprised if the series went to 6 or 7.

From the last couple of games left in the season I thought Boston was the best matchup for the Knicks. We are younger and faster then the Celtics. We have two superstars in their prime vs 3 superstars in their twilight's of their careers. An MVP and future hall of famer point in Billups verse an up and coming point in Rondo.

I like our matchup for a couple reasons. Game three really showed us what this playoff matchup is going to look like. Knicks have the ability to run them out of the gym but can they close out the game and make those final possessions count?

I think the last 9 games really had this team moving in the right direction while the Celtics have been clearly reeling for the end of the season. A lot of people are hoping its the same as last season and that they can just "turn on a switch" to become playoff ready, but this season isnt the case. They made some premature trades forfeiting their hold on the eastern conference and banking on an Oneal duo to lead them into the playoffs.

According to reports that duo is now in a singular form of Jermaine Oneal since as of late last night Shaq was deemed out of the playoff picture indefinitely with a real tough injury surrounding his achilles tendon and limiting the bloodflow to the muscles in the area.

Now to my hypothesis on the matter: Losing Shaq, Not having Perkins, trading away the other 2 bigs for 2nd round choices leaves an aged Jermaine Oneal and Nenad Kristic to start. I think Doc is going to see that neither of those guys can really hurt the Knicks, but its going to take an embarrassing game one loss in Boston to make him have a lineup shake.

I fully expect Big Baby Davis to be made a starter for this series and Oneal and Kristic coming off the bench for game 2.

Amare, Billups, and Carmelo will have an amazing night combing for 70 points. Our bench will get some real strong contributions from Toney Douglas, Bill Walker, and Shawn Williams with a three point barrage around the wings.

Sheldon Williams, Ronnie Turiaf, and Jared Jefferies will all be cycling minutes on Garnett and Davis and I fully expect a slugfest out there.

Knicks are like 2-14 vs the Celtics since they got KG/Allen and 0-4 vs them this season but we're going to win Game 1... In Boston... by 14. Ok. Can't excuse you of being pessimistic that's for sure.

^ Im hoping for a quick series but Im expecting a 6 or 7.
* Rondo needs to show up in the playoffs like he has in the past or we will be done
* KG will play Amar'e well enough that they will have similiar stats
* Ray Ray neeeeeds to catch fire
* Pierce needs to contain Melo..... if Melo drops 40 a night we are done but if Pierce makes him work for his shot and has Melo work on D hard then I think we will be ok
* Thank god the Knicks dont have a scary Center because this could easily swing your way if you did..... This is why I like this match up because The Big Fella can rest a little bit more
* The X factor for us is Jeff Green. If he can come in and play good on the Offensive side of the ball and help contain Melo then I think we will win

With all that being said ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN....... Hope you all enjoy the series and good luck.....

Game Prediction- 103-97 Celtics..... Knicks will come out strong and lead for the first half but the Celtics will come back in the second

I don't think you'll see any C's fan 'worried', but IMO the biggest deciding factor will be whether the C's come out with energy after resting the last three games or will they be rusty. I think they'll come out with energy, plus the bench is pumped after handing the Knicks a 10pt defeat the other night, in which what, 3 Knick starters saw minutes?

The C's rotation at center should be sufficient vs the Knicks centers. JO will beat Turief outside, but Turief should get the advantage inside

Kg should cause problems for Amare- Davis and Green can cover him as well, and have better outside games IMO. Amare's going to have to own the C's bench when KG is out to get the advantage in this series

Pierce-Melo will be good; If Pierce can play Melo like he's played Lebron in the last two playoffs, he'll be in good shape. Pierce should be able to get to the line a ton on this team too. Melo has the offensive upper hand, but the C's have the D on him this series.

Ray should have a big series. Have fun running with him Laundry!

Since Chauncey isn't a speedy PG, Rondo will save some miles this series. Rondo just needs to remember that this guy can shoot, so he can't play off of him as much as he'd probably like to get picks and boards. Just wondering have you watched a whole Knicks game lately?

If the answer is no (which I know it is) then please do not make comments like that because they do not play 1 on 1 basketball.

dude, these are the playoffs. half court game. Being on the fast break and uptempo style does not allow for one-on-one but in a half court setting, that's what the Knicks do - have you watched them when they play the half court game? this is what they do. Celtics will slow this thing down to a halt. and when this happens, it will be one on one.

The Knicks have not shown any consistency at all, 2 games over .500, playing and beating team likes NJx2, TOR, CLE, MIL, CHA in the last 10 games doesn't say anything.

The Knicks fans calling in to sports radio here in South Florida is hilarious.

I hate both teams, and keep going back and forth on who I'm "rooting" for...but hearing these delusional Knick fans spew their opinions about how the Knicks will out play the Celtics and eventually match up and beat the Heat is hilarious.

I think the Knicks have a chance, but listening to these awful Knick fans being so arrogant as if the Knicks are a top tier team is ridiculous makes me hate them and hope they get swepped.

That is one of the most homer things I have seen on this site.

You can call anything you disagree with homer on this site. Its such an overused phrase.

What I know is this:

Regardless of Competition the knicks have been showing signs of gelling both on defensive and offensive ends of the court. They are coming together at the perfect time, right before the playoffs.

The Celtics have been showing signs of their age over the last quarter of the season. Losing the number 1 seed and dropping down to the 3 seed. All the "homer" celtic fans are trying to say its just a switch they need to flip, but they are failing to see that they are going through what the knicks went through incorporating new players to their team. They had a lot less people they had to incorporate but what is hurting them is the amount of players they gave away as well as the injuries to the players they retained. They are still trying to figure out how to use Jeff Green and the key components of the team have been showing their age over the last quarter of the season. Will the little rest they had at the end of the season be enough for a playoff run? I dont think so, but I could be wrong. Needless to say if the Knicks jump ahead early and the Celtics have to play catch up the way they did in game 3 during the season they will be in trouble this series.

The Knicks gave away game 3 with quick shots down the stretch and bad turnovers. You cant rely on that happening in crunchtime everytime we play each other, so I dont think its homerific what I said in my previous statement.

I definitely see Doc moving Davis/Green into the starting lineup when he sees how unproductive Troy Murphy, Nenad Kristic, and Jermaine Oneal are when they have to defend the perimeter.

Knicks 107 - Celtics 93 BOOOK IT

I would like to look a lot deeper into those stats you have there.

We played the Celtics 4 times this season. 2 of the games it was with our old squad. (remember we did trade away practically our whole starting lineup for Carmelo and Billups.)

1 Game was with our full current roster during our slump of trying to figure everything out. (The Knicks have been playing much better ball since that game 3)

the last game of the season was a tryout for both benches to see who will get playoff minutes. (3 starters may have played in that game but they sure as hell didnt play down the stretch. I remember even seeing Amare take his Jersey off at the end of the third, give it to a Celtic fan, and head to the locker room.)

This Celtics team hasnt faced our current Knick team when rolling on all cylinders.

On the Flip side we have seen what these Celtics are capable of the past 3 seasons, and we have seen their decline this season. We have seen what happens when they go into the playoffs injured (playoffs when KG was injured is a perfect example).

They traded away their one chip they had over us at the trade deadline. (ALL THEIR SIZE) and the banked on Shaq being ready for the playoffs and they lost that bet.

So you tell me why I should be scared of the Boston Celtics?

The Knicks have no size, so being without Shaq will not hurt them that much early in this series...You should be scared of the C's because of the way they play D and will try to slow down the NYK fast paced offense.

I don't even know who I want to win this series. Boston's team is less likable than the Knicks, but NY's fans are more irritating than Boston's.

I would love for the Knicks to advance and meet the Heat in the next round so that we could renew that great rivalry. Then again, I would like for the Heat to be able to face Boston as the Celtics are the defending East champions.

This is a mind f -k for me. So the hell with it, whoever wins wins. I'll just hope it's a great series that goes 7.

The Knicks have plenty of length. Our length can play the perimeter too. The Celtics traded away their one legitimate area they dominated us in. So I dont see how you can say not having Shaq wont hurt them.

Whenever a team loses a clear chip that was an advantage for them going into a series is ridiculous, especially if that team is equally bad at rebounding to their opponent.

Jetsforever is talking so much trash on these two teams. I'd probably vote for Driven if I were you guys. He said both these teams don't deserve to be in the playoffs, and said Melo is the anti-clutch. LOL. He keeps bringing up something about Paul Pierce and a wheelchair too.

They need that from Ray Ray. He's gotta be bigger than he's been.
