The NBA, facing the possibility of a work stoppage, has canceled this year's Las Vegas summer league and will not run its annual college internship program, the New York Daily News reported, citing league sources.

The league is also not sending any teams to Europe for training camp and has not scheduled any preseason games there, according to the report.

The collective bargaining agreement between the NBA and the players union expires June 30 and there have not been formal talks between the two sides in months.

The summer league usually starts in July, while the internship program, at the league offices in New York and the league's entertainment division in Secaucus, N.J., lasts 10 weeks, according to the report.

The NBA, which says more than half of its teams are losing money, has proposed instituting a hard salary cap, as well as shorter contract lengths and non-guaranteed deals.

Last month, union executive director Billy Hunter said a hard cap would effectively end guaranteed contracts. "We've had that right for years, and it's not something we're trying to give up," he said.

Information from ESPN.com senior writer Henry Abbott was used in this report.

honestly...who cares

Summer league is kind of nice bc it gives an NBA fix during the offseason, but the quality of basketball sucks...

no big loss here

I am surprised, however, that they didnt wait on this a little while to see if something could be worked out. Seems like a sign that the league isn't hopeful of a quick deal.

Damn it. This season has been fantastic and a lockout would just ruin all momentum. I hope it lasts for a month only.

This is good news for Ketucky Wildcat basketball and if the kids return. We'll be stacked with the incoming recruiting class (#1 in the nation of course) and Knight and Jones prob coming back.

You can say all you want about the quality of the bball. I rather low quality ball than no quality nor quantity at all.

Blame the owners who want more parity in the league. This is the NBA the league has always been top heavy

College Basketball, College Football, Pro Football > NBA. So not that big of a loss. College Basketball will be better this year because of it.

Which is why it's the bigger priority.

Well it makes sense. Why would you schedule anything if there isn't any agreement reached. If they schedule anything then ended up not being there because of CBA, they just lose money. Nothing really new here.

Oh, sorry that you thought my ">" meant the truth for millions of people worldwide. On a forum full of smart ***** comments, spam, and homers out the *****, me not including "In my opinion" hurt the way people read my post. Carry on.
