Andrew Bynum’s troublesome right knee will be an issue again entering the Lakers’ postseason after he hyperextended it early in the second quarter Tuesday night. He is scheduled for an MRI at 11 a.m. Pacific time Wednesday and will not play in the regular-season finale at Sacramento on Wednesday night.

The knee is the same one Bynum had surgery on in the offseason to have cartilage reattached. He has continued to have some pain — taking anti-inflammatory medication to combat it — but has played very well since the All-Star break in anchoring the Lakers’ defense and dominating the boards.

Bynum stepped on the foot of San Antonio’s DeJuan Blair while running back on defense, overstretching his right leg to the point it buckled and he went down. The NBA playoffs start Saturday.

Hyperextensions are not usually long-term injuries unless there is further damage — possibly to the ligaments or cartilage with hyperextensions — which will be determined by the MRI exam. Even if the damage is not extensive, there is usually difficulty with swelling and straightening the leg.

Bynum stayed down after the incident before walking off the court under his own power and toward the locker room. He had reason for concern given his history of knee problems — and the fact that he suffered a subluxation (brief dislocation) of his left kneecap when he stepped on Lamar Odom’s foot in 2008.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak later came down from his seat upstairs in the arena and went to the locker room also to check on Bynum. Soon after, it was announced he would be held out the rest of the regular season and have the MRI exam.

The Lakers beat writer Mike Breshnahan tweeted that Bynum apparently said he was fine.

"Yes sir. It's not really that bad. It was painful right when it happened but it's not that bad right now."

Hopefully. I want the Lakers at full strength when they fall ; ]

Mike Trudell (@LakersReporter) via twitter:

Andrew Bynum told me while walking out of the building: "I'll be able to play. I'll be all right. It's a set back."

Bynum said his knee is obviously sore, but that it looked worse than it is. He was scared at first, feels better now.

I hate to say it but he is the Lakers only big that intimidates guards in the paint. Emphasis on ONLY. Without him its an layup line, and goin against maybe Chris Paul it can spell trouble and if they were to play the Hornets it will be tough and i do expect then to win, but it can turn an sweep or an 5 games series into an 6 or 7 game series and my team is already older than most. We need his big body in the middel and im hopin for the best.

Obviously not having Bynum would all but crush the Lakers chances at another title, but that being said, he apparently was moving around on it pretty well after the game, and claimed it wasn't that bad. Hopefully the kid is ok, I would prefer a healthy Lakers team come playoff time. That way when they hopefully fail :), there will be no excuses.

disagree.

08 we got to finals without him.

in 09 and 10 we won the title with a LIMITeD amount of minutes and relevance from him.

if odom and pau play like they played the first two months this year when he was out we will win again.

You might have something smart to say, but deep down you know it's true. Just like Brand left, even though the Clippers were good then..lol..

We're better off with an injured Bynum than a healthy Melo that would disrupt our offensive game. Not a knock at Melo but he wouldn't fit the system when Kobe is already in it. Especially for that much talent.

Anyways, I don't understand how someone can be so ecstatic that a player got injured. Says a lot about someones character.

That was a different time. Without Bynum, the Lakers main advantage, their size inside, is gone.

You saw in the finals even last year, when Bynum was in the game, nobody could beat LA. When he missed time, LA was beatable.

I honestly think the Lakers chances take a massive, massive hit if Bynum is out.

Lakers wouldve never gave up all that for Melo. Knicks were owned on that trade. It wasnt their fault thou. Melo wanted the money so bad that a bidding war ensued and the Knicks won the auction.

Bynum will recover some, but any of hopes of any team having a full complement of 100% healthy players at this point in the year is highly unlikely. I'd take Bynum at 50%, if he can give us the same production (or better) that he gave us in last year's Finals.

Having said that, anyone who doesn't think that behind the scenes Mitch isn't seriously considering finding a way to bring in a new centerpiece once Bynum's contract nears the end is kidding themselves. I think Bynum's contract is up in 2012 or 2013, and I don't put it past Kupchak to consider all options.

Yep, and with 3 Finals appearances in 3 years, I can honestly say that I'm content, if not completely full. If we make it to the Finals again this year and win it, I'll be thrilled.
