View Full Version : Who are the dumbest and smartest writers at ESPN

Rafer17
04-06-2011, 11:13 PM
Dumbest: Chris Broussard has to go to be on top of that pile. I also think Henry Abbot can at times be worthless. JA Adande can be great but if he's talking Kobe/Lebron he's just out to lunch with his bias. The guy who does all the awards watch stuff is also a total moron.

Smartest: David Thorpe. John Hollinger. Simmons/Bucher. Chad Ford. Chris Sheridan. Bill Simmons

Neither are full time regular ESPN guys, but my favourites by a mile are occasional contributors Larry Coon and Sebastian Pruiti.

Bill Simmons, he's hilarious and right like 95% of the time.

Jemele Hill (sp?) has to be the worst, Hollinger is pretty bad considering his knowledge about the game is strictly limited to stats.

Bill Simmons is the best out of the bunch.

That's not true. His major contributions to the frontpage are stats-based, but his scouting reports on Insider, and his twitter commentary, and even just his insights in ESPN articles that aren't strictly stats-based, all suggest a level of understanding that well exceeds that of the average sports fan, and is definitely way beyond that of the vast majority PSD posters.

Do you mean Jon Barry?

I can understand not getting the first name right, but that's one of the most famous families in basketball.

1.Bill Simmons

2. Everyone else

Simmons is probably one of the best writers in general. Uses humor and joke but backs it up with facts, stats, and logic

He's a sports nerd. Like a lot of people on this forum. I think that's one reason why he's so popular among die hards.

The hate be brought. He's an idiot. Fact.

He just says it how it is. ESPN First Take is the best show. He is right most of the time. People just don't see it. I used to hate him, but now he is my favorite.

And I forgot to to list Stephen A. Smith as well.

Dumbest? i cant really decide they are too many and to dumb.
Hollinger and his self made stats figured out to prove that his biases are accurate "scientifically" is a good candidate.

I did for 30 years. And when I embraced stats, it helped me evaluate even better.

Most Hollinger opponents don't like him because his findings don't point to their boy being as special as one thinks. I am fine with that.

Adande has some great pieces about individual players and coaches sometimes.

Simmons writing creativity and skill make him and excellent read, even if his opinions are horribly biased.

Hollinger is nice for an unbiased look through the lens of statistics.

I enjoy Stein's power rankings too.

I really try not to read anyone else. Broussard, Steven A. Smith, Jalen Rose and a collection of other writers insult me with their lack of talent.

Wilbon looks to be promising.

Thorpe and Ford I don't get to read much do to lack of insider subscription. Hollinger too.

I like him for this reason. He public acknowledges his opinion, his arrogance and his bias and tells you why he is right. He is under know illusion of objective journalism, so he takes his bias and rolls with it.

i dont like him because he thinks his stats are accurate when they are disporved time after time

Last year by this time he made a % of winning the ring thing.

it was something like Cavs hadc 35% of the odds then Jazz hadd 30% MAvs 20% and Magic 15%

Lakers? Celtics? like 4% each or soemthing like that.

You didnt need to be a genius to know thats was wrong.

Which was the finals?

Favorite: Michael Wilbon. I almost always agree with his statements. He's very articulate, very balanced, and still has a sense of the "every man."

Dislike: Bob Ryan (I especially hate when he's on Around the Horn)

Whole different category of BS: Stephen A Smith. I know he makes comments for ratings, but the pure arrogance the way he talks makes it seem like he doesn't have to have sources because he is the source. I just can't stand his statements, I'm more pissed at myself when I agree with him.

John Hollinger is so terrible.

Simmons is obviously the favorite. And to whoever said Simmons is for the die hards, I would definitely refute that because his writing seems to cater to the casual fan. He mixes sports and pop culture which is basically the opposite of die hard.

He himself is a die hard basketball guy, but his columns and his book definitely aren't for the hardcore NBA fan. His book is just very entertaining while talking about basketball.

I like Simmons when he's not spewing his Jersey Shore/MTV ********. Mixing sports with that guido-infested trash is like mixing sandpaper with sex.

Rick Reilly is good. I don't like him as much as Simmons, but Reilly's a far superior journalist.
