Tex Winter, former Lakers assistant and triangle offense pioneer, finally will get into Hall of Fame
By K.C. Johnson

After 57 years of coaching and several years languishing on the ballot, Tex Winter finally will enter the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, a person with knowledge of the voting results told the Chicago Tribune.

The official announcement will come Monday in Houston before the NCAA championship game. The induction ceremony is Aug. 12 in Springfield, Mass.

Winter, 89, brought the triangle offense he learned from Sam Barry into the NBA, where he won six championships with the Chicago Bulls and three more with the Lakers on Phil Jackson's staff. Winter also won 454 college games and went 51-78 as coach of the Houston Rockets from 1972-74.

"Coach is special," former Bulls general manager Jerry Krause said in a phone interview. "This is long overdue but well-deserved."LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/sports/basketball/nba/lakers/la-sp-tex-winter-20110403,0,4557736.story?track=rss&dlvrit=53295)

I'm glad that he's getting recognized while still with us. He's getting up there in age.

Mastermind, he deserves it. 11 Championships, even Phil who rarely pays homage to anybody, is humbled whenever he talks about Tex
