Just was wondering if their ever was a team that won their division but failed to make the playoffs. That must have been a bad division if that happend.

If you win your division, you're in the playoffs. So no.

would be interesting if a team needed that rule to get to the playoffs (and wasnt good enough based on record)

04-02-2011, 02:55 PM
then what would be the point of winning the division?

Yeah its impossible...if you win the Division you make the playoffs.

There has been cases where a team with a better record missed the playoffs due to a division winner(in another division) having a lower record

I'm pretty sure we can translate that to 'what if the record was not Top 8 in the conference'...

no point for facepalms guys, honest mistake by the op

There's one way I can see what the OP was trying to get at.

For example, let's take the Bulls and Pacers.

The Bulls finish with a 55-27 record and a 10-6 record within their division and end up with the 3rd seed.

Then, the Pacers finish with a 40-42 record and a 11-5 record within their division but fail to make the playoffs.

Thus, the Pacers end up "winning" the division, but not making the playoffs.

So then it's possible?

I don't know why people are face palming the OP.

The team that has the best record in each divisions is declared division champion. Not the team with the best division record. If you win your division you're guaranteed a playoff spot. Stop overcomplicating this people, the OP was just clueless.

http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=NBA_Conferences/Divisions

Playoffs
The three regular season divisional winners in each conference earn a playoff berth and one of the conference's top three playoff seeds based on regular season record. The remaining five playoff berths for each conference will be based on regular season records with no regard to divisional alignment.

Home-court advantage throughout the NBA playoffs will be based solely on regular season record, not playoff seeding, thus a divisional winner that has a higher playoff seed than an opponent will not necessarily have home-court advantage in the playoff series

Fixed... My bad

It's not impossible, Totally unlikely though. 5 teams per division, 15 in a conference. Only the top 8 in the conference (record wise makes playoffs). So a division would have to be so bad that even the division winner doesn't have a top 8 record in the conference. 7 teams per conference don't make the playoffs.

listen if you lead a division you're guaranteed a playoff spot regardless the record.
