I don't see why he would think that. They haven't even faced each other in the playoffs. The Lakers are also a successful franchise, while the Mavs are choke artist. They first have to show they can hang and beat the big boys before stating a rivalry. Not everyone can be a rival to the Lakers, at least not a true rival.

There are plenty of teams that consider the Lakers their rivals. It's not a rivalry until the Lakers feel the same way. The last few rivals we have had are the Celtics because we have faced them in the finals and the Kings/Spurs in early 2000 because whoever won those playoff series was going to win a championship.

The Jazz are much more of a "rival" than the Mavericks...

The Lakers have only one rival. They wear green and hail from Boston.

There several inferior teams that have "rivalries" with the Lakers which include the Clippers, Mavs, Blazers, Nuggets, Warriors, Suns, etc...

The Lakers have had the Mavs' number for as long as I can remember. Having a big-mouthed owner who goes back and forth with the Lakers' organization doesn't constitute a "rivalry".

Can't help but agree with you guys. If they take us to six and it's a competitive series then that would make sense. But rivals after one regular season game? Doesn't quite add up. These two teams haven't even met in the playoffs during the Kobe/Dirk eras.

Buss stayed that very clearly right at the time when they got the last ring. It is the world against us and we are ready! Some where around that neighborhood.
Boston was a rivalry but if we win this one is over! Then who?:speechless:

this guy doesnt know what a rivalry is. the supposed kings-lakers rivalry doesnt/didnt count in my book. the only rivalries that count are laker-celtics and lakers-spurs, and had the pistons stayed together and stayed elite from 2004 on, they might have been in the book. you may argue seasonal rivalries with any lebron team or the blazers since they usually beat us in the rose garden but i dont count those either. nor will i count the suns because their team changes every year

once the Mavs as a team can have more points than Kobe by the end of the 3rd quarter... we can revisit this as a possible rivalry...

Its not a rivalry until the other team can prove that they can go through the playoffs. Mavs have been failing in playoffs for the past 3 years.

Mmm i think we have not met them since their line up was Harper, Blackman, Aguirre, Perkins, Tarpley.......

So what rivalry?

By the way that 80s roster would sweep 4-0 the current mavs.
