•Martinsville Marks Milestones: Longevity and performance are hallmarks in the career of #5-Mark Martin due to celebrate his 800th NASCAR Sprint Cup Series start in Sunday's Goody's Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway. Martin's signature start comes nearly to the day of his first NASCAR Sprint Cup appearance (April 5, 1981) at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway where the then 22-year-old Batesville, Ark., native finished 27th. Over the course of 29 seasons, Martin has:
" Won 40 NASCAR Sprint Cup races and posted 96 victories across three national series, tops among active drivers.
" Finished among the top three in NASCAR Sprint Cup points standings nine times, most recently in 2009 when he finished second.
" Martin is only the eighth NASCAR Sprint Cup competitor to reach the 800-start plateau and likely will pass Darrell Waltrip (seventh with 809) and Kyle Petty (fifth with 829) later this year. His combined 1,055 national-series starts are second only to the 1,185 appearances of NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty.
Martin isn't the only NASCAR Sprint Cup driver celebrating career milestones at Martinsville.
" #16-Greg Biffle and #1-Jamie McMurray will mark career starts No. 300. Biffle, a former NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion, will make his 625th national series appearance.
" #14-Tony Stewart remains one top-10 shy of career No. 250.
Additionally, Kyle Busch could reach yet another lap-leader milestone in the Goody's Fast Pain Relief 500. Busch, who celebrated his 10,000 NASCAR Nationwide Series lap led on March 19 at Bristol Motor Speedway, is 332 laps from leading his 20,000th across the three national series.(NASCAR)(3-30-2011)

its not always about where u start its about where u finish that matters. yes its true he's not a very good qualifier but on race day he does what he needs to do to finish in the top 15 which is pretty respectable IMO

Qualifying is more important at short tracks than anywhere else except for road courses. Hard to pass, easy to get caught up in wrecks, easy to go a lap down early, and pit stall selection at short tracks is critical.

After the way Mark went from a top 5 car at one point to a 20th place finish, I think it's safe to say Lance McGrew was one of Junior's problems last year.

Qualifying is tommorrow morning he was 24th in final practice i am not very thrilled about that.

the first practice doesnt really mean all that much in the final practice is where they'll be setting up for race trim. he'll find what works during qualifying and use that setup to go out during practice and get faster

J.Twiggy
04-01-2011, 10:39 PM
There is no more practice today was it they'll go out on cold tires and then won't have anymore time to dial the car in for sunday i hate this schedule it sucks.

I think he starts in the top 25 though which would not be bad

thats horrible at Martinsville it puts him in position to be lapped by the leader very early on in the race but given the length of the race he'll have plenty of time to get back on the lead lap but at the same time he'll have to stay out of trouble and have good stops on pit road

J.Twiggy
04-02-2011, 01:20 AM
If he goes out early he won't stand a chance at starting in the top 15.

Quite a few races are going to the "impound" schedule this season with qualifying on Saturday. From what I've read on Jayski, it was mostly the tracks' choice.

Good run by Jr hell of a run by Harvick Jr will get there a little disapointed but it's alright.

Pisses me off that Jeff Gordon probably would have won the race if he had not been in the pits right as the last caution came out. He would have started in 3rd where Junior did, and his car was better than Junior's all day, so I think Harvick would not have been able to catch him. I guess 5th isn't bad after falling back to 9th, but still...sigh.

DodgerB24

Jr. will never be as good as his father. The Intimidator would have put Harvick into the wall...at least would have blocked him a lot better which would have put Harvick into the wall. I couldn't believe Jr. was saying he didn't want to be the bad guy. That's the difference...Dale Sr. embraced being the bad guy and was a champion...Jr. doesn't have it in him.

See it all depends on who you are as to how you are viewed among the fans. Since Dale Earnhardt was a fan favorite people encouraged him to drive dirty to win, and they loved it, loved seeing it, cheered it, so he really wasnt the bad guy, atleast not in the fans eyes. Some of the new guys (not going to mention any names) will not hesitate to move someone out their way, and since they are not a fan favorite, they are considered dirty drivers, and they want to see those guys banned from nascar. It all depends on who you are as how you are labeled by the fans.

The thing is Dale Sr. knew when to put someone into the wall. He would do it at short tracks where the speeds were lower. He wouldn't do it at tracks like Daytona and Talladega. These new guys are driving dirty at the superspeedways just as much as the short tracks. The other thing I notice with Jr. is he doesn't block anyone like his dad use to. Jr. could have done a better blocking job and then Harvick would have had to choose whether he wanted to put Jr. into the wall or not. I am wondering if because that's how Dale Sr. went is that's why he doesn't block like Sr. did.

You dont remember Earnhardt turning Rusty Wallace at Talladega coming to the finish line on the last lap in 93(i think) and then him saying basically I didnt mean for him to flip... Earnhardt would wreck you anywhere, he didnt care. Rusty even said it, "anyone will wreck you at Martinsville, only Earnhardt will wreck you at Talladega"
