View Full Version : David West facing six months of rehab for torn ACL in left knee

New Orleans Hornets forward David West(notes) has been lost for the rest of the regular season and playoffs with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, league sources told Yahoo! Sports on Friday.

West suffered the devastating injury Thursday night in a Hornets overtime victory over the Utah Jazz, and an MRI on Friday in Phoenix revealed the tear that will take six months of rehabilitation.

The season-ending injury is a crushing blow to the Hornets, who are clinging to the seventh seed in the Western Conference. Memphis trails the Hornets by one game, and Houston is three back now.

After dunking the ball for his 29th point on Thursday, West buckled to the floor and had to be carried off the court. After averaging nearly 19 points and 7.6 rebounds a game, the Hornetsí frontline will struggle immensely to overcome the loss of West.

Itís possible West, who could opt out of his contract and become a free agent this summer, has played his final game for the Hornets. He turned down an offer for a contract extension earlier this season, and had hoped to make as much as $10 million a year in a new deal. West had planned to exercise the opt-out clause on the $7.5 million owed him 2011-í12, but itís too early to tell if the severity of the injury could cause him to re-think going out onto the market coming off a knee injury.

West hadnít closed the door on returning to the Hornets, who drafted him in 2003, but itís been unclear how far the franchise would go to meet his demands. Several teams with cap space in 2011, including Indiana and New Jersey, have an interest in signing West.

To be honest, It's a good thing because that looked worse compared to what I thought it would be.

thats tuff. In a contract year makes it kinda insult to injury. don't see many teams taking a chance on him now

Injury sucks, but at least he doesn't need surgery on his ACL, just rehabilitation.

03-25-2011, 05:12 PM
At least he doesnt need surgery.. Hopefully he can sign a good deal..

03-25-2011, 05:18 PM
Where are yall seeing he doesnt need surgery?? If you completely tear your acl and your basketball player you gotta get surgery... I know cuz I've torn both of mine...

It sucks for him with the Cba coming up, even though Acl tears aren't near as detrimental to a players career going forward as it used to be, it still will cost him money..

I always feel for hoopers that tear their acls...The rehab sucks lol...It makes it a little easier though when your in the nba and you still got millions..

03-25-2011, 05:18 PM
Where does it say he doesn't need surgery? If he tore it completely of course he needs surgery and then 6 months rehab.

03-25-2011, 05:24 PM
tear = surgery, simple as that.

doesn't seem like it's as severe as some, though, so he should be able to recover and sign a contract regardless.

Damn that really hurts the hornets come playoff time.

$uck$ for We$t

03-25-2011, 06:19 PM
Too bad for the Hornets. Man that sucks.

03-25-2011, 06:43 PM
Damn that really hurts the hornets come playoff time.

They might not even make the playoffs now. They don't have any easy games remaining on their schedule and two versus PHX, one versus HOU, and one versus MEM.

Goodbye payday.

03-25-2011, 06:55 PM
Sucks for the Hornets because West will probably just stay with New Orleans for one more season.

We still have enough players for some cap room.

03-25-2011, 06:57 PM
bye bye big freeagent $$$$

this x 1000

at least it may help the grizz move up in playoff position

03-25-2011, 07:06 PM
Hard to imagine CP3 wanting to stick around too.

03-25-2011, 07:33 PM
Really hurts the Hornets, just gonna be an easy first-round knockout now.

Also hurts him big time come free agency this summer. He was gonna get a big contract and now thats in jeopardy.

That's what happens when you don't stretch before playing basketball.

That's what happens when you don't stretch before playing basketball.

Are you ********? The ACL keeps the tibia from translating too far foward, a mechanic of the knee joint. Not stretching can result in muscle tears, which heal themselves in most cases.
