View Full Version : I got Love, whose your MIP?

There were a number of years back when Grant Hill stepped up his game under Doug Collins, where Collin made a push for Grant Hill to get MIP (didnt happen), because while his numbers had increased a fair bit, his overall impact was a dramatic change, and he also entered a level of play that was reserved for only the very best of all time. This season such as arguement can be made for Derrick Rose, as has been argued by some, but I also think the same could be said of Kevin Love. When you are a guy already averaging over 10 boards a game, and you increase your average to by 4.4, that is EXTREMELY IMPRESSIVE. Scoring as well, its one thing for a guy who rides the pine one year and breaks the rotation the next to get a double-digit scoring increase, from 4.5 to 14.5, but when you are already posting 14 points, to jump up 6 points is a bigger deal in my eyes. And Love's percentages. He's taking more 3's, yet his FG% has still gone up (from 45% to 47%) and his 3pt% has jumped up as well, almost 10% from 33% to 42%, and a slight increase in assists, FT% and a reduction in PFs is impressive as well. Improvement is not only about getting your per-game numbers up, its about improve how you get to those numbers (percentages for example), and also about staying on the court longer, and logging fewer PFs, or not increasing your turnovers, even though you touch the ball more.

Love is my pick, Rose is a close second in my book, but I was wondering who else you guys think have really improved, not just in raising averages, but in the small parts of the games to, like percetages, turnovers and personal fouls.

Love to hear from you all. Lets give some love to the guys who are working on their games.

I like the OP, but I will answer this one like I have answered the last 6 MIP threads.

Love already has it on his mantle.

Lamarcus Aldridge will get my vote....its not that hard to get beefed up stats on a team where you are the only good one for Love...if his team would have been better I think he would be a lock to get it. With L.A. keeping his team in the middle of the pack in the playoff race, I think he should get it. With Rose most likely getting the mvp most likely, L.A. should get MIP.

Whenever anyone makes these threads they should really give two answers.

First homer pick then a pick from another team.

Geez

Talk about an inflated Cranium.

I would say Love locked it up. Seems like media already chose Rose as M.V.P. (deservedly) I don't think you can win both, Otherwise wouldn't the MVP always be the MIP? Unless they have won it back to back

Sure Love went from:

14 and 11 in 28mpg
to :
20 and 15 in 35mpg

and increased his 3pt shooting like 9%, his FT% like 3.5% and his overall FG% by 2%. But, his team stinks, he was able to stay on the floor 25% longer then last year to increase those numbers.

If Derrick Rose doesn't win MVP, I would say he wins MIP. The only thing Rose didn't improve this year was his FG%, and thats because he takes way more 3's now that he can hit them at an acceptable rate. All his stat improvements came in pretty much the same amount of minutes though, so he didn't get the benefit of extra playing time to increase his totals like Love did. He also helped his team win a heck of a lot more games, which I know is more of a criteria for MVP, but I think still has to be taken into account for MIP as well.

However, even if Rose doesn't win MIP, another guy I didn't see mentioned here is Russell Westbrook..OKC is one of the best teams in the West this year, and he is upped his ppg from 17 to 22 by increasing his 3pt% by 10% and his FT% by 6%.

The streak is crazy, but I don't see how Love could have this award on his mantle already...He has a very good chance, but I wouldn't say its a lock. Especially now that he may miss the rest of the season.

I got Love for Kevin Love :)

I think not long ago Hawkeye mentioned that Love can go down as one of the best rebounders in the game, when it's all said and done in his career. I have been opening up to this assumption more-and-more as I watch him play in the paint. He's a step ahead of everyone I see that is attemtpting to outrebound him, and his numbers are just impressive in every sense.

I want LA from the blazers to win it. They should screw Love over like they screwed LA for the all-star game. Love is on the wolves for god sakes. Of course Love's rebounds go up. The wolves don't make to many shots. While LA has help make his team a playoff team, Love just rebounds crappy players shots all game and tosses back up from 2 feet.

But we know Love is gonna win it.

Jrue Holiday is also in the conversation here, though I wouldnt put him at the top of the list, he does deserve a nod. Myle Lowry as well. He's made some impressed strides. DJ Augustin has gotten back on track (no doubt in part to the exit of Felton).

It's going to be Kevin Love. He has improved his points per game, rebounds per game, shooting percentage, 3 point shooting percentage, foul shot percentage and all were significant increases.

Aldridge has had a tremendous year, but he really only improved his scoring by 5 points per game. He improved a lot, but in comparison to Love it is not as great. You're argument about Love being on a bad team is not really relevant IMO. You could argue that his stats would be better if he had a decent point guard or front court.
