I was watching the Hawks/76ers highlights and I was wondering what they need to be contenders. Obviously overpaying for Joe Johnson cripples them but I was thinking maybe a true center, maybe a defensive guy like Javale Mcgee. So what's you guys opinion?

the same thing they needed for years, a good bigman who isnt undersized and plays on both ends

New pg, depth, putting their players in the right position. Horford is a pf and Smith is a sf.

A get out of jail free card, w/ jail being JJ's contract. He's a good player, and if you put that deal on a good team it wouldn't be a huge concern. But only a team that is "there" can pay him that. A team like ATL, that still needs to add pieces doesn't have that luxury - that deal limits their flexibility to do other things.

Steve Nash/Chris Paul PG type and a C like a Tyson Chandler type. They can trade Marvin Williams and even Josh Smith or Joe Johnson if they have too. Sometimes with teams more is less, because too many players are looking for shots. Instead of one or two pretty good players having control. They would be better off with a good PG like Nash/Paul, Joe Johnson at SG, and Horford at PF. With defensive specialist type at SF and C.

PG, center, new coach, and trade Smith and Williams.

They may need to blow up this team because they're not getting through the east with this squad... Perhaps they can build an older team that wants to win like the celtics did through trades and free agents the next two years like since they have very tradable pieces:

Steve Nash
Vince Carter
Grant Hill
Zack Randolph
Chris Kaman

Leandro Barbosa
Antawn Jamison
Peja Stojakovic
Michael Redd
Marcus Camby

Just a silly idea, but these hawks aren't going to win the east anytime soon...

Trade Josh Smith for a good center and boom, they're good... Easier said than done of course.

first, horford isnt a C, Josh smith is an odd player ( who cant be considered either Foward ) basicaly, IMO, they need to trade Josh smith for a guy like Kaman ( or another C) they need to get Horrford in his natural possision.

they need a new coach-they need a TRUE center cuz horford is a pf and josh smith is a sf-a pg even tho hinrich can play both ends but not an elite pg- and depth off the bench

The Hawks need to win.

bringinwood
03-24-2011, 02:11 AM
I'd say they need a PG.... Hinrich is solid, but not who you want if your aspirations are to win a ring...

It's been well stated that they need a center...

They need a great pass first point guard that can really push the tempo and take advantage of their athleticism and find their open shooters so that they don't have to try to create for themselves all the time.

Fans. Seriously.

The team is far from terrible though they lack an identity.

josh smith for kaman sounds like a great deal for both teams. ATL desperately needs a solid C and clipppers could use a good SF too.

Josh Smith
Blake Griffin
Deandre Jordan
Eric Gordon

If they can find a miracle and trade Joe Johnson that would be a good start. They need a good pg.

they need to take some of the money they threw at Joe back.

all they can do is play hard, and get some better role players i guess.

they need David Stern to nix the deal they gave Joe Johnson

A new PG, a bench, a decent backup PF/C, a defensive-minded coach and a stronger fanbase( seriously; you cant let Knick fans take over your home arena )

Im pretty sure Dwight Howard grew up in Atlanta. But I don't know if Atlanta would have the money to go after him.

C-Howard
PF-Horford
SF-???
SG-Johnson
PG-???

They need to trade Smith or Horford for a legit Center. The guy who stays will then be the PF

We'd technically have the money and ability to go after him in free agency. But we'd probably have to keep Josh to do it since Josh is Dwight's childhood bestfriend and was the best man at his wedding, or vice versa. That would be our biggest draw.

But, really the Hawks need Heart. They need a new coach. Teague could be the pg, but Larry Drew is so streaky with his rotation. A major shake up is needed. Without one we're just a 6-8, first round knock out team...maybe

I think their biggest problem is joe johnson... hes getting paid superstar $$$ but performs like a mediocre player most nights. hes too inconsistent and not to mention their guard play is a joke... kirk hasnt helped them at all.

you know that isn't possible. Nobody is taking on that deal this early in its maturity. Talk about a franchise killer

A new, passionate owner (singular, no more "groups") with deep pockets to clean house and build a real team around Al Horford.

03-24-2011, 03:24 PM
New pg, depth, putting their players in the right position. Horford is a pf and Smith is a sf.

Yeah that pretty much sums it up. Joe Johnson is NOT and will NEVER be a Superstar/Number 1 option. Joe Johnson = Danny Granger.

Lakerhead4ever
03-24-2011, 03:35 PM
they need to trade everyone on that team. maybe even move to a new area. that team gets no support!

Look at the warriors, they suck and their fans are their every game to support them.

and joe johnson is over rated, and over paid!!

It doesn't matter how much Atlanta fans like Josh Smith. The Hawks need to trade Smith for a larger center and let Al Horford dominate at power forward.

They need a coach who beats them until they play hard for him and none of this "quitting on the coach" bs. They've got talent.
