View Full Version : Don Nelson: "I got fired when I asked Biedrins to (shoot underhanded),"

As many of you know, Andris Biedrins is the worst foul shooter in the NBA. Last year he shot 16 percent for the 2009-10 season. This current year he is averaging 32.3 percent, a very small improvement.

Nelson claims in the interview that he had on "Chronicle Live" that he was fired for asking Biedrins to shoot underhanded because he was so bad at free throws. Obviously this is not the reason why he was fired but did it contribute to Nelson getting fired? I personally think this is hilarious. Feel free to watch the interview for yourself and comment.

Nelson certainly lost the respect of many of his players and this could be a strong indication why.

His shooting form is just terrible, but a couple season ago he was shooting around 50%

Nellie was fired for not caring anymore. He used to only coach in games and would let current head coach Kieth Smart coach practices.

can he do worse shooting underhand? prolly not... players care too much how they look... i hope biedrins' respect level also dropped by his craptacular shooting... anyway, i can't believe this was pertinent to his release... the league shot underhanded for decades, maybe AB would be better at it.

If this dude would put as much time into free throws as he does at the tanning saloon he would be at Chauncey Billups level. No ****

The funny thing is that jumping from 16% to 32% is a drastic improvement. He shot literally twice as high. :laugh2:

Biedrins should follow the advice, he gets called out big time by this guy....

He improved 100% that's a huge jump, the fact that it's still awful doesn't take away from the huge jump.

 16%

I shoot like 85-90% . But I'm PG. Don't know why big-men suck a FT's. Dirk can sink them with 91% (last season), too.

How the **** does someone shoot 16% from the line?!

I did poorly when I first started playing in a league. Although i'm a very good shooter, free throw is a killer for me. Had to work on it for a very long time to get and stick to my "ritual." Had to zone out and do my ritual prior to shooting the free throw.

Anyway, did any checked his FTA-M??

He only attempted 25 shots anyway. It is not like he attempted 200 free throws.

nelson got fired because he was an idiot. he would play guys either 45 minutes or 5 minutes... that is why so many guys wanted out of there, no consistency and no success.

I think he got fired because they were playing bad more than anything.

I remember shaq was practicing underhand and it was working, but tha. He didn't want to do it because it was embarrassing.

If I had a player shooting 16%, damn right I would tell him to try something different.

How the **** does someone shoot 16% from the line?!

LOL. it was BRUTAL to watch last year.

i find it hard to believe that the coach who was once kept over Chris Webber was pushed out of the job because he was tying to teach fundamentals( FT's in general not the underhand part) to an under achieving player. not his M.O. he left cause he was not involving himself in the job he was paid to do. plain and simple he quit on the team.

Nelson was fired for more than just that.... he lost his entire team, not just Beidrins' confidence.

I'm willing to bet that I can shoot better than 16%

Becasue two of $#!T is $#!T.

Seriously though: I DO NOT UNDERSTAND HOW ANYBODY IN THE NBA SHOOTS LESS THAN 75%!!!!

Seriously? Line up your shooting side foot with the center of the rim, put other foot off to a slight angle, tuck elbow in at side, center ball witht he poles pointing out and the lines parallel to the stripe, use off hand as guide, shoot, lifting elbow up and flicking wrist being sure to follow through.

I AM A HORRIBLE SHOOTER!!! HORRIBLE!!! I always played the post because in action it was always hard for me to line up a good shot with limited time, so the post worked best for me. If i had all the time in the world, I could hit a jumper, but my FG% outside of the paint was $#!T and EVEN I CAN STILL HIT 75% of my free throws!!!! What is wrong with these people?

I remember coming out of grade school, by free throws were awful, my grade nine coach said: here, this is how you do it. I went from hitting 1/4 to 3/4 inside two weeks with practice.

Seriously. I could show anybody in the nba how to shoot a free throw, why are guys like this not getting instructon?

I imagine coaches have worked with his mechanics. It has to be mental, he's afraid to miss. I know his shot is ugly but he has had to of experimented every way imagineable, this is the NBA and not high school ball.

It's more than just form. Plus big men don't have the same coordination. I still he should have tried the Rick Barry though. That would have been entertaining.

As a side note, how does someone shooting 16% from the line only get there 25 times in 33 games? I'd be hacking him every time he touched the ball.

An average high school athlete, not necessarily even a basketball player, should have the hand-eye and touch to make at least 2 out of every 10 free throws. I only played 3 years of organized bball and I know I was at least over 50% on free throws. It's an open shot from right close to the basket, why is AB making it look so difficult.
