LOS ANGELES -- Police engaged in a roughly 20-minute standoff Saturday afternoon with a knife-wielding man on the floor of Los Angeles' Staples Center, where the Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers were set to play later in the day.

Police tried to convince the man to drop the knife, but eventually tackled and apprehended the man after the faceoff on the court near the visitors' bench area.

Some spectators for the early afternoon game, scheduled for 12:30 p.m. local time, had begun filing into the arena, but were evacuated once the standoff started. The players were confined to their locker rooms.

Police spokeswoman Officer Norma Eisenman says the report of the man with a knife came in shortly after 11 a.m. local time from an off-duty officer and confirmed his arrest, but had no further information about his identity or how he got into the arena.

Michael Roth, a spokesman for Staples Center owner AEG, had no comment about the incident, but said it would not affect the game.

A Clippers official said building administrators insisted there would be no delay from the scheduled tipoff because the Los Angeles Kings were scheduled to play the Anaheim Ducks at 7:30 p.m. local time.

Anytime I go to an NBA game or concert, the security is so pathetic that this story doesn't surprise me at all. What does surprise me is that someone hasn't snuck a gun into an event and gone postal somewhere yet.

Considering it was LA, I'm surprised he got there prior to the game. I figured he would show up around halfway through the 2nd.

Considering it was a Clippers-Cavaliers game, I'm surprised he went there at all.

Apparently the guy was hanging out by the Cavs bench while Eyenga was on the floor. Eyenga heard knife so he ran into the locker room.

I heard it was LeBron. He thought it was a Lakers game and he wanted to rub out Kobe.
