NBA lockout could force Kidd to retire

Jason Kidd(notes) turns 38 on Wednesday, which qualifies him for the NBA’s senior citizen class. If the Dallas Mavericks point guard has his wish, he’ll play two more seasons until he’s 40 and retire as a reserve.

Kidd just isn’t sure he’ll get his wish.

If the NBA enters a lockout and the 2011-12 season is canceled, one of the NBA’s all-time greatest players said he’ll likely retire. With just a month left before the playoffs start, Kidd doesn’t know if his playing days will be over by the end of June.

.................

Some of the league’s other elder statesmen will be facing similar decisions. Shaquille O’Neal(notes) (39), Steve Nash(notes) (36), Tim Duncan(notes) (turns 35 in April) and Kevin Garnett(notes) (35 on Saturday) will each have a year left on their contracts that could be wiped out by a season-long lockout. Grant Hill(notes) (38) will be a free agent this summer.

Shaq will go to Europe imo. He'll still get good offers by teams who want to promote their product(ie sell jerseys and gain fame) and Shaq seems like the type of guy who runs behind the $$ and popularity.

Not sure about that at his age, but most of the good centers have migrated to the NBA and it's purely 17-20 year old centers or 33+ year olds that roam around Europe now (Vazquez will join Orlando possibly this off season) so he could be very valuable even now. I wouldn't mind having him on my team's roster :)

I see quite a few retirements anyways this season, and even more so if there is a lock-out

I don't think Grant Hill would retire. He and Nash somehow are the two best players on this current Suns team and they're both playing terrificly.
