View Full Version : Nets now 5 1/2 back of the 8th seed. Can they catch Indiana?

After beating Boston tonight, they have won 5 straight and despite being just 22-43 they are only 5 1/2 back of the Pacers, who hold the 8th spot with a meager 28-38 record. I think 35-37 wins is all it will take (maybe even less) to lock up the 8th spot. Though the Bobcats & Bucks are neck and neck with Indy, the Nets could make it interesting with 17 games remaining now that D-Will has lit a fire under them. It would be incredible to make the playoffs just a year after losing 70 games. Thoughts?

I don't think so. They were my pre-season pick for the 8th seed, but there just are not enough games left in the season.

I hope they do, that would be a great season...but I think Indy will figure it out and win a few games. Even if they don't, NJ has to topple Charlotte, who is playing kind of well right now.

It's possible. I remember the year we got Vince Carter, we went on an big run at the end of the season and clinched a playoff berth on the last day.

I'm not holding my breath though

have to win like 14 games the rest of the season, if the dwill trade came 10 games earlier i think they would of gotten the 8th seed

Thank god there's just not enough games left in the season to do so. If it was one team rather than three, I'd say there's a chance. This team will be there next year... If there is one.

I wish, but it's unlikely. But I believe, I believe, I believe, check the Warriors in '07 legoo
didn't think the Nets would win today, but they did. Anything is possible!

Its not likely yet. Indy would have to continue to struggle, and the Nets would have to go on an amazing streak.

Nah it ain't gonna happen but it should at least make for an intriguing end to the season amongst all these teams.

16 games to go .... They'd likely have to run the table... I can't see that happening...

With only 17 games and a few teams ahead of them I don't think they can. I mean even if they went 12 - 5 which would be a great run the Pacers would have to go 6 - 11 and you still Detroit, Charlotte, and Milwaukee ahead of them.

If the trade was made a couple weeks earlier than I could see it, but unless they run the table it's going to be very difficult. I personally would absolutely love to see it happen, because that means that Dwill would have to play inspired ball for 17 more games and that would be amazing to watch.

Its better if they don't. Then they can draft a SF next year and then be ready to go in 2012.

No, they traded away their 1st round pick.

There's not a snowballs chance in hell they make the playoffs. They are better off getting a lottery pick, drafting a pg, and re-building for when Williams goes to Dallas.

Highly doubt it. It's actually not even right for them to put that type of pressure on themselves when these guys are JUST learning to win. Then there's the fact that Deron is injured and needs rest. However it's good to see them beat an elite team that just held MIL to 56pts

Because of you:cool: I actually like the nets since i watch them when my knicks arent playing but you make it extremely hard to like them when you always have something negative to say about my knicks.

With that said ill be rooting for the nets to make the playoffs.

It goes both ways though.

Knicks fans have been trashing the Nets since the 90's. I don't hate the Knicks at all. i root for them when they aren't playing the Nets. But some Knicks fan have never had anything positive to say about the Nets. Even why Nets fans like me were applauding and congratulating Knicks for getting Melo, they trashed us when we got Deron Williams.

The Nets won two games in a row without Williams during this streak. If the Nets win the next game, which seems to always be a tough game after beating a top team, then a lot of people might expect a wild race to the Playoffs. They play the Bulls next too so if they win that'd be two wins against top teams in a row.

Until the Nets are mathematically eliminated, they have a fighting chance. Come on, we all know by now anything can happen in the NBA. Didn't a certain Suns team get into the playoffs years back after an 0-13 start? The Bulls a few years ago were 29-39 before winning 12 of the last 14 and getting into the 8th seed at 41-41. Nothing is impossible. Granted, the Nets have their hands full with the Bulls next, and who knows how the rest of their schedule goes. But that 8th seed is so undeserving to the others, why not the Nets? After all the drama with Melo, that they get in would be hilarious. I'll pull for them until they are out.

Not enough games. If you run the numbers they would have to be great and Indiana would have to be terrible and I don't see the Pacers holding up their end of that deal. Not enough people are giving Indiana enough credit for their mini-run with Vogel. Hansborough looks great in the starting lineup and they are playing HARD for their new coach. On the bright side for the Nets, the future is definately bright as long as they lock up Williams.

Doubt it. There aren't enough games for the Nets to catch the Pacers (or Bobcats). However, in the event that they do find a way to squeeze in, a Bulls-Nets first-round matchup wouldn't be too bad to watch. We'll see.

It would be pretty crazy if it happened, but I don't see them making it this year. The Bobcats, Bucks, or Pacers will not likely all struggle enough for the Nets to pass them and there's only 1 spot up for grabs.

I don't think they will get in due to the lack of games left but if nothing else, this should be a good sign for NJ and Deron. If he can turn a bunch of misfits into contenders and make them believe they can win, then imagine if they add someone like David West this offseason and have a full training camp under their belt.
