Check out the Elo Player Rater (http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/elo.html) on basketball-reference.com. The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in two-player games such as chess. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo, a Hungarian-born American physics professor. It's now being used to give an inclusive, logical rating and ranking to the greatest players in NBA history. You can take part in it too.

Not a fan. Having played chess regularly, I noticed that this system works because chess games are normally one-on-one matches, not the same way for basketball.

The site says that every player has an initial rating of 1500, so meaning in the first few matches everyone has about the same chances of winning? Eh I don't know about that.
