I though this deserved its own thread since the NBA will be playing two regular season games in England this weekend and it could be the first step in the NBA creating a European Division down the road. Only time will tell if that is the case. Anyone else excited to see how the games do in England?

I think the NBA wanted to just gauge the interest level in the European market and Toronto was a natural choice considering the amount of international players the Raptors have. Plus it makes sense that Toronto was picked since they are the only team that is not American.

I like NJ to win this.

Not sure why everyone is so upset with the match up. If you think about it, it makes sense. It's basically a trial run. Throw to teams with some good international flavor out there first and see how it goes. No reason to send to contending teams this late in the season for basically an exhibition game (that's all it is in the league's eyes). It's being received very well across the pond. It's definitely a positive, and now the league can actually send some good teams over there next year and continue to build the hype.

I wasn't talking in terms of selling out. Of course the games will sell out because it's a rare opportunity for those in London to see an NBA game firsthand. But in terms of taking fans in England and Europe and completely grabbing their interest and turning them into NBA fans, you can't tell me Bargnani and Lopez will draw more attention than Griffin vs. Rose. Given that Williams is a great player, he's not as much of the exciting variety for grabbing new fans that would rather see flashy, athletic plays as opposed to fundamentally sound, great basketball. That's what I was getting at with my first post.

The interest in England is a buzz about the games. I don't think you fully appreciate the interest level that exists in the UK for this game. The best seats in the house were going for 1000 pounds which is crazy...

If you knew anything about the European game, you would know the team is always bigger than the player. I am not saying Blake would not be a huge draw, he would, it is just not as important to everyone in Europe like it is for Americans. They appreciate different things in the game outside of the flashiness that dominates the American game. I think that match up is perfect considering the players involved between the two teams.

True ;)

I mean you'd even see the odd Elton Brand jerseys being for sale as well as Derrick Rose ones before they even became known ;)

Only jerseys you can find in any London shop that has NBA stuff is:

Lebron
Wade
Kobe
Rose
Garnett & Pierce
Howard

I guess starting next season Amare and Melo will be as popular just because NY has many fans since the 90s as well, but not as many as the Bulls have.

They got the Nets because of their European owner. Bulls got no one right now other than Deng to relate to Europe.

Having a European owner is bigger than just 1 England player.

And my 2 cents. As much as I'd love an NBA team in London, it shouldn't happen. The flight across the Atlantic is a killer, I just dont see American teams doing it on a regular basis. And lets face it, the London team would most likely suck for a while. Would probably end up like the Raptors, great city, yet players wont wanna play there.

I'd be satisfied with this though, a handful of games a year. Shame they make it so expensive though. Raptors/Nets would probably cost 30 bucks to sit lower bowl in the Jersey. In London I reckon its at least $50 to get noselbeed seats.

England has its football.. Great athletes and venues for matches that they live for..

But hopefully basketball becomes more popular, or they get more chances at seeing NBA teams there, like todays and tomorrows games.

Also the preseason games in England are nice to watch.. But still not the same as the real season game.

The thing is with basketball (unlike the nfl) the time difference puts people off more than anything else. The earliest live games start at midnight each night (apart from the abc sunday showcase). If English tv replayed live games the night after at 7/8pm in the evening, they'd get more fans easily, but as you say, football is usually on at those times and takes priority.

we used to have a game a week on regular tv, but now I think its all on cable. Now we have espn I think its monopolized all US sports on our tv. If you have espn though I think they have games on pretty much every night, just that they're all on past midnight.

We have league pass broadband in Europe now, but its not exactly well advertised. Well, anywhere other than nba.com. Its pretty good value, and has no blackout games, and the ability to rewatch the games the next day at a decent time is a godsend. They need to hook league pass up to our tv's though!

NYKalltheway

Basketball is a Mediterranean and north-eastern European thing mostly. No way they will accept the NBA to expand in Europe ;)
And if the NBA decides to go to England or France or Denmark where basketball is not popular, it's no big deal for European basketball. It may attract some fans to get to watch some 7-8 NBA teams that would come to visit, but almost no one would care about the new European teams... You just can't create a team out of nowhere and create a regular fanbase of over 2,000 people in Europe.
European baskteball is fine as it is. And Brazil is not in Europe :D (someone mentioned Barbosa as a European player earlier)

I think it could work if we had, lets say the european division. London, Madrid, Paris, Berlin, Athens, Moscow. Have teams only from the eastern conference come over on 5 or 6 game road trips. If you makes sure they don't have any other road trips of that length throughout the season, and that they have no back to backs in different cities in Europe, maybe it could work.

Having just one team in London isn't feasible
